This Camera MOUNT is a GAME CHANGER

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Something different this week,
I just received my Silence Corner Atoll, from a successful Kickstarter campaign. - www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
I have been very excited for this photography accessory since the moment I saw it, because it it going to change how I use my camera in the field. Before today I was using an L-Bracket on my Sony A7iv (A7 4) which has supported one aspect of my style, vertical landscape compositions.
Thanks for watching,
- Nick

What you like in this collar is the same as what I am looking for. I have been using a7IV as well. Thanks for a good review.

It is important to note that the atoll does NOT support the lens. It is really a round L-bracket. If you have a large lens, you must still use the bracket on the lens and mount that bracket on the tripod. Generally, these lens brackets allow turning the lens. But the atoll will NOT support the weight of a long lens and you might put your mount under a lot of forward weight pressure.

Yes definitely, I don't know that camera manufacturers are producing many gigantic heavy lenses these days, and they have definitely improved the body and mount quality over the years. My Sony is an alloy body, with the mount attached, no plastic in between, so I don't know what weight it could ultimately carry. I think about the word photographers swinging and lifting their camera setup with high 600mm zooms and wonder if maybe there is more strength in the mount that I might expect.

Long lenses usually have their own rotating collar. Too much to ask Atoll or Smallrig to support large long lenses’ weight and length. Atoll or Smallrig is good for short to medium lenses. L plate is frustrating for using Sony A7c, IV and esp A7RV fully articulating screen, so Atoll is s clever solution.

Have you tested in windy weather? Is it rock solid or was there flex? Also, how do you use it with a 100-400 on lens collar? Does the Atoll foot interfere or do you have to spin it out of the way or do you have to remove the whole thing?

  • @lightmeetslens

    @lightmeetslens

Hey! I did test it in the wind, it was very stable, I doubt it is 100% as good as a regular tripod plate on a strong tripod, but I bet it's almost as good. I decided to drop the lens collar on my 70-200, I think the benefit of simplicity outweighs the need to the extra mount, but everyone is different.

Don't wasted your money on this production if you plan to use third party lenses like Tamron and Sigma. The ring does not allow any lenses with bumps on the body. I threw mine away and went back to L bracket.

I'm probably overthinking this but any ways to validate it's level? I only ask as they gave things to level it so now i'm worried it's not(for astro purposes)

Hey Matt, I think you can get close with level, but it is still a connection through rubber, so it’s not as solid.

  • @lightmeetslens

Good question, I have not found that, but I was concerned about it. I decided to leave the smallest bit of gap between to Atoll and the lens to prevent exactly what you are worried about. So far, about 2 months of owning it, I don't have any scratches that I can see.

Seems that they keep changing things on this for Nikon cameras. You all can thank me for getting Silence website to allow for pre-order as well. Which is now available. They got stock and it was all gone in a couple of days. Anybody know if you can use a 24-120mm lens on a D810 with this?

The newest generation Tamron lenses with the USB "hump" near the mount will not work with the Atoll. This includes the 35-150mm and 28-75mm G2. While you may be able to barely fit it, I would worry that something will get damaged by interference, and you would need to move the ring so close to the camera body, there is no space to get your finger in to access the lens detach button.
