Who needs a L bracket when you have an Atoll?

Update: Atoll, just removed the Om-1 & EM1 from the list of compatible camera because the 'models have bigger grips, it will cause smaller finger space between ATOLL and camera. Not recommended because of the bad experience of grasp.'
For this week's video, I share with you a new product I just bought that will make you reconsider your L Bracket system. Let me know in the comments below what you think of this new product. Also, stay until the end as I have a little bonus for you! Look forward to discussing this topic with you. For the OM-1 I bought the Atoll C + the Heightening Plate.

Greetings Emilie and thanks so much for sharing this info about the atoll system! I use the OM-1 and OM-D M E1 Mk III cameras. I visited the website and after further review, discovered the atoll D mount has an extended mounting plate to position the ring further out from the camera grip, so I picked up the D ring and heightening plate to give them a try. I my go ahead and pick up a C also. After all, the cost of two rings and mounts is practically the same as a high end L Bracket. I'm believing either will work. Thanks again and Cheers for 2023!🍷🍷🌹

Thank you Emilie for this interesting clip. I got my OM-1- and truly enjoy using it. I'm not entirely sold on the Atoll yet, even though I have a (horrid!) L-bracket that has all the issues you mentioned. I'm not sure I can get my fingers through to the function buttons to the right of the lens mount and changing lenses might also be a little difficult. I don't have huge, meaty hands either. That said, I love it when someone takes a refreshing perspective to an existing problem, so kudos to the crew at Atoll. I'm not saying "No" as yet, but it's almost AUD$200 and my financial controller (wife) has the final veto. That focus bracketing sheet is very, very welcome too. So thank you.

Hello Emilie. Thanks for your video presenting an interesting product. Personally I have an L-bracket on my EM1 Mk3 from RRS. It is on all the time so that whenever I need it it's there, independent of the lens I use. No problem with the screen or port access also. Having said that I always appreciate your videos, many thanks for all your efforts and sharings.

l like the Alzo flip bracket. And it does not block access to the side. I use the one with the umbella and flash bar so I can use move the flash to one side on the camera instead of straight above. It is just quicker and easier. It can be used handheld or on a tripod.

Just came across your video on this. I got the Atoll a while ago for my OM-1 & Em-1 series bodies specifically for use on astro tracking mounts when using any lens that doesn't have its own tripod collar. This avoids using a ball head on top of the declination bracket, and simply adds camera rotation which is all you want. Other than the known grip size problem preventing full rotation, the Atoll works well for my purpose. For general photo use mounted on a ball head, I'm not so sure about it being any easier to use compared to a basic L-bracket, except for the port access issues. I think of the Atoll more as a tripod collar that's on the body, not the lens, if that makes sense.

Hi Emilie. This looks like a superb product, which is actually quite reasonably priced. I paid about $100 for my Smallrig cage for the OM-1, and I bought it without paying attention to the fact that there was no side arca swiss fitting. Like you I don't like an L bracket. I would not use it the vast majority of the time as I am handheld, and would resent the extra weight and bulk. I've also thought the portrait vs landscape orientation is not as important for m43 as the image fairly close to square (unlike FF 3:2) and you can recrop in post. I do have an L bracket that will attach to Peak Design plate if I really need. This device is interesting, but seems large for m43. Also it blocks the lens switches.

I am also an OM-1 shooter and have been frustrated in not being able to find a good L-bracket solution. But the Atoll solves everything! I have a couple of questions, though: My tripods are Manfrotto and they use their own proprietary mount (not Arca-Swiss). Their type of mount is clearly not compatible with the Atoll which looks like it has an Arca-Swiss mount. Is this true? If so I can easily convert my Manfrottos to Arca-Swiss. The other question is about the correct model of Atoll I need for the OM-1. On your video info you say you have the Atoll C + Heightening Plate but on the Atoll website it specifies the Atoll D + Heightening Plate for the OM-1. It states that this solves the problem of being able to fit your fingers around the OM-1's grip when the Atoll is fitted. But on your video you say you can still get your fingers around your grip even with the Atoll C + Heightening Plate. So are you sure you have the Atoll C and not the Atoll D? What about the zoom-ring and the function buttons behind the Atoll?

All proper tripod ballheads also allow turning the camera sideways. More so, all quality L brackets come with an additional 1/4" screw hole so one can attach the Peak Design standard plate without blocking any possible battery doors. There are also Capture Clip compatible L brackets on the market. This Atoll however blocks access to lens switches and the aperture ring.

@@EmilieT Moving it to block access to the zoom or focus ring in turn? Surely the Atoll works for people, but not all - to answer your question "who needs an L bracket?".

Just heard back and this is the answer: the ¼” 20 thread on the bottom would allow for someone to use their currently existing Manfrotto plates without any problems.

I tried ordering one for my OM1 Mark lll and was told it is no longer recommended - due to small gape between Atoll and camera making gripping an issue. Have you found gripping an issue? Thanks.

Lens rings are good for panoramics and bird watchers but are normally lens specific. NodalNinja do some good ones for Fisheye lenses and most of the L bracket makers to lens mounts for telephoto lenses. iShoot do some good lens mounts for tilt-shift lenses. The AToll fails right at the concept stage, it is astonishing that it is actually manufactured.@@EmilieT

With a telephoto lens, use the lens feet to switch to landscape and portrait. If you use a L bracket you are putting a lot of pressure on your camera body.
