My oneplus 5t has one front and one back and takes great photos that are almost as good as ones taken on my full time sony rx10 mk3 and that thing cost $1500

Behrad Farahani with the handle you can pull focus change iris and it can control the camera. I use one with my scarlet w and I can tell you it’s worth it for run and gun/ hand held filmmaking.

For them, if a 950 dollar handle is the difference between having to shoot 5 takes of a scene and 12, they'd gladly take all of Red's stock without looking back

But when you're comparing this against professional products, red handles don't fall too out of place. For example, RED's main competitor in the movie industry, arri, charges like 1000 dollars DAILY for renting it.

Arri Alexa is industry standard though. That's what the hollywood cameraman uses. It's more than good, it's the best in the world, it's the equipment that will help make a big film, using the best actors that will raise hundreds of millions of dollars in profit, it has to be THE number 1 best video camera, if its not, the DVD wont also hit the shelves of stores or released in popular online stores. Firstly, the resolution is kind of irrelevant for most applications. A film would normally be mastered in 4k at best, and it's not uncommon for them to be mastered and delivered in 2k, most cinema projectors are still 2k and I bet you don't even notice. But there is a lot more that goes into it, which makes these cameras so expensive, such as recording in RAW (and red RAW is even compressed, which is all done in-camera!), or the colour science. Which isn''t even the best on the market, and most cinematographers tend to prefer the Arri Alexa line of cameras, which has much better colours and highlights, despite most models shooting in less than 4k. Oh, and lastly, you would usually RENT these cameras, not BUY them, unless you're a big production company that shoots everyday, or perhaps a film school.

The point that is making me mad is that camera like this will be wasted on KZread web show. The reason why is that In proper production environment this cost would be nothing(look at end credits of any Hollywood movie) Here's why: What's the difference between photographers and cinematographers? Photographers own their gear - cinematographers rent it. Because of this - highest tear video cameras are are made in such low volumes, that marks up the price. Even more - there are cinema cameras that are so expensive, that you can't even buy them from manufacturer(like ARRI Alexa 65mm), but only rent from them.

How could that fact possibly make you angry? It is a win for Linus, the cinematographers, and Red. This camera will not be "wasted" because supply-and-demand ensures that Red will make another one. Yes, I would agree that the Weapon 8k S35 has no benefit to Linus over the Epic-W ($30,000), as the only difference is frame rates at 8k, but the fact that Linus can afford it, and that he wants to own badass film gear is enough to justify his purchase. It is very clear that you are jealous that Linus can afford this camera and that you can not, but there is no reason to be upset or angry. I would also like to point out how much it would suck if every amateur on KZread could afford a Red. All the videos would look flat and boring because nobody knows how to color-grade RAW footage.

It's not a pricing issue. RED and companies alike make cinema cameras which are meant for professional productions like movies. With multi-million dollar budgets, camera equipment accounts for less than 5% of the total budget. This means that productions are willing to throw immense amounts of money for high-quality cameras; therefore the camera companies are able to jack the prices up.

The onus is still on Linus for this one; he said so himself that no one has an 8k display (yet), and even if they did, would they really think to themselves that watching Linus Tech Tips in 8k was worth the investment?

agreed. many KZreadrs use RED for their "KZread Crispyness" - how about getting an Alexa Mini to shoot your "crispy goodness"? But nooooooo. they want to shoot 8K in RED RAW and downres to 4K Rec709. These cameras are meant to sit in a cinema production house somewhere, shooting at 8K and being graded down to 2K. They're supposed to mount CP2s and CP3s, but noooo, youtubers use them with Canon L lenses and rave all about how expensive they are and how they need more storage to handle all the 8K crispyness. /facepalm.

For best quality you have to record in a higher resolution (8K) than the aimed resolution (4K), because editing and especially special effects have a destructive property (you lose visual information) when applied to your original footage. That's what I remember from my 3D-2D Art semester, and it's quite true when photoshoping pictures.

I can see why it's useful to the group. Having 8K video means you can have masses of flexibility when you edit. You can crop in 2x and get a free digital zoom, which makes for a lot of flexibility on the final product. You get the ability to fully adjust colour and tweak brightness in post. But honestly, KZreadrs buying these things seems redundant to me. The quality of KZread is constantly declining thanks to their compression - which was basically the reason for Linus going 4K anyway, so he could claw back a bit of that lost to compression.

That's not what dynamic range is at all. Depth of field is totally different and unrelated to the amount of dynamic range a camera has. DR is about capturing scenes with extra information that gives you the option to change colour balance and exposure in post.

You can be certain Linus, Luke and Brandon had several *long* discussions about the benefits and drawbacks of making this move before committing. Linus knew exactly how much it would cost. He's just expressing his outrage to the world here. Seriously though, I agree with him. Those accessories are just OUCH.

Feels like it wasn't Linus' idea to switch to RED. It appears to me that someone bought the cameras only telling Linus it's going to be expensive, but not exactly how they had to buy each accessory independently.

My dad was telling me about the expensive camera equipment he just bought (it was a few thousand) and I sent him a link to one of Red's accessories. He's been doing this a while so he already knew about it, but I can see him having a heart attack if he hadn't known. The camera body is less than half of what you really need to spend to make it work. The lenses and accessories are what make this thing, well, stupid expensive. I'm actually shocked they only spent $160k for 2.

I literally go through this conversation every day with a co-worker every time I check out the specs on our filmmakers' cameras. The prices blow me away!

Every few years I come back here when I’m thinking about upgrading to a new body or lens. It’s makes me realize the $3k I’m spending is actually downright reasonable.

I'll love to see a video where Brandon explains/fight Linus about this camera...
