The guy knows his stuff and makes up for some of Linus' technical short-falls in some areas and Linus meets his match to bounce off, in others.

Yeah, and the issue is that he's really not enough for all the things they need around there. They needed to hire a full-time network administrator a year ago. 30 people whose jobs all basically are done on high end PCs and servers handling petabytes of data need a real professional in there.

Funny thing. I live in Romania and RDS (Digi) our main ISP, is launching 10 Gigabit internet for home users at 10 Euro per month (previous payment plans were for 8 Euro for 1 Gigabit or 6 euro for 500 mbit).

Considering the fact that there was a noticeable amount of dust being blown out of some of those servers, switching from an air-based cooling system to a water-based system sounds like a very good idea.

You guys seriously need to get some proper filtration for that server room. That is unless you enjoy doing this sort of clean up work every 6 months. Might I suggest an HVAC air handler with dual AprilAir merv 13 filters minimum. This way you can filter the air going into the room while creating a positive pressure environment in the room itself. That will fix the dust problem quite nicely for well under a grand.

plus the extra power you need, plus the serverhardware wont live long enough to die on dust related sickness. seriously for one rack, not even full, it doesnt make that much sense. but you create other problems, and have to maintanance. its obivious they dont do maintanance on a shedule. so your airfilters wont do much pressure if not cleaned regularly.... than the heat issue as we have no climated room there .. yea not really worth it for 4 or 5 servers that wont live longer than 3 years thanks to all the free hardware they recieve

For future reference, rack doors usually have pins that can be easily pulled. Any time I was doing a lot of work in a particular cabinet, especially moving machines, I'd pop the doors off. You only usually need to release the top one, and then lean the door out and lift. ... and always mount the network switch facing the back. Then all your wiring is on one side. You don't get to show off the thousands of dollar of networking equipment, but you don't have that cabling hell to deal with. It makes it easier to trace wires too.

That is why you don't comb over cables in front of equipment. You always go to the side of the rack or completely above the rack to the side. So that in the event you have to pull something out you aren't unplugging network cables.

Love your videos. Was just wondering why with all that space available you stuck your server rack in that closet. It's hard to work and move around. Am sure a lil better closed room can be made somewhere around.

I think the problem is that they are running a massive operation 24/7. It is easy to say but harder to do. They basically have one of everything so they'd either have to build out a whole new system and then switch it over or try and do it all at once and hope it works. I'm sure he plans on it at some point but in the mean time has 400 videos to get out every week.

yeah, the problem is the bosses always put the most important network parts in the smallest spaces. like it's not the most important thing for your company to have a good working network even if you have a company that runs on it. now for a metal factory, I can see where it's not as important. But darn it most offices and tech comp's its killing both the brains and the heart if you have network problems.

I'm a Network/System Engineer too but this was way more unorganized then it should have been. No planning what so ever. Why not make a management interface on the old and new routers so they can be accessed via VLAN 1 and not need to have a switch configured on other vlans to access it... etc... like no common sense going on in this video. Was funny to watch I guess...

I know what happened but I know networking to some degree.. he really needs to hire someone with a network+, ccent, ccna.... and someone with experience :p also some cable combs and a neater networking closet woulda helped them save time for sure. but this is definitely funny to watch them stumble.
