I remember plating the Topflite Magna, Pinnacle Oversized golf balls back in the 90’s. I really enjoyed them and just found some Magda’s here recently and after some years of health issues I found them to help me a bit more in my game. Volvik Golf makes a Magma and Callaway reintroduced the Magna again back some years ago before switching the name to Super Soft Max. I have trouble finding either of the Callaway here in the States. Great video.

Great review . I've tried these for a few holes . They seem to get up quicker. I've yet to compare to my PROV X . I like the idea of the rough being just a tad shorter with the larger ball.

Interesting KZread. I watched this KZread and I got curios. I pulled out the micrometer and began to measure some golf balls. Here is what I found. Callaway CXB, Callaway Supersoft, Callaway HEX Diablo, Callaway Warbird, Callaway Chrome Soft X, TaylorMade Distance, TaylorMade Tour Response, Topflight XL, Niki, Noodle, Titleist Velocity measured 1.785 inch diameter.

This is a re-work of the Callaway Magna ball which was introduced a year or two ago and then vanished...Not sure whether the quality of this ball is superior but, the size is identical...I wondered what happened to the Magna...Thought it was a good option when you play those tracks with impossible rough...The yellow ones were much easier to find than the standard size ball...

Great review and insight into the obvious pluses and minuses. You didn't say but I would assume that the max will not have much spin off a wedge and will bounce more on the green. That said the normal Supersoft doesn't spin much either which is obviously great on driver but not so good with a precision shot. Can't beat the price though.

Bought a box of these a month or so ago and for once I did feel the difference they did feel really soft off the face and I felt more comfortable putting now that I can see the ball is bigger I’m thinking that was a boost to my confidence in my short game and even hitting my 3 wood and hybrid that I’ve always struggled with I was stringing these balls very well with them.

If it’s easier or at least not worse on putting then it’s a winner because trying to hit a bigger ball will be easier than a smaller one. Just as using a bigger club head is. Greater surface area means more chance of sweet spot/ball contact. Will get some and try .

  • @melvynrobinson7479

When the Americans came over to play in the open they didn't switch to the 1.62 ball because it was easier to manoeuvre, it was because the smaller ball stayed under the wind better on those windy links courses whereas the bigger ball ballooned up more. That would be my concern playing this larger ball into a strong headwind

Just like the Top Flite Magna before it, this Callaway is 3% larger diameter. It sits up higher in the fairway, a LOT higher in the rough, making it a LOT easier to hit/pitch/chip than a normal ball. It has less spin, making it much straighter on full shots. It's surprisingly easier to putt, because the larger size takes less of the break on the green. HOWEVER, a 3% larger diameter creates a 10% larger surface area, which means you will lose almost exactly 10% distance with every club.

  • @2Pi100

Andy maybe you need to flip your ‘initial concern’ of the larger the ball the smaller the hole on its head. Look at it from a different angle in that if you were to conduct a controlled test whereby you had the regular super soft ball v the super soft Max ball in a putt out in the scenario whereby the ball burns the edge of the hole or lips out. Then surely more of the larger balls are going to drop in the hole due to friction and gravity acting on a larger mass and surface area. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️just a thought.

I would suspect that the forces that cause a 1.68 size ball to lip out (larger size vs the cup's diameter ) would be reduced on a 1.62 ball. The .06 differential allows the ball to be already in the bottom of the cup. Same thinking regarding the 1.73 ball vs the 1.68 ball.
