This building has an Infinite Staircase, but it's not what you think..

MC Escher created an infinite staircase roof top, & today I ask the question if it'd be possible to make an IRL building like that? 🤔

Neat video! I was expecting that each stair was slanted rather than parallel with the ground plane. So although there's a step up, the Y increase of the step is then removed by the slant of the step.

I always through these illusions are possible in the real world by just making the steps small ramps down to make up for the space going up.

that's literally a better idea than the video
I'm an architect in training and I can sympathize. Modeling stairs that actually work is tough as-is. Stairs like this, not fun at all lol. I've gotta add that you could totally make these in real life, but probably not legally. That ramp would need to be a lot longer and less steep to meet code requirements. It'd probably need several landings too. So that might break the illusion right there. Could be a fun project though, "ADA Compliant infinite stairs"
TANNER DOES NOT RESPECT PHYSICS AND IT'S ABOUT TIME SOMEONE CALLED HIM OUT.
Aaaaw. I was hoping for some non-euclidean geometry. Ramp is as much cheating as the two ledges.

Agreed.
Add a speed ramp to the slope so that Tanner walks it faster. Then the weird stopping effect in that one part would stop.

Yeah, though I would think that would just be like the teleportation problem he mentioned with extra steps. He wants the staircase with no strings attached that you can build in the real world (and this would be the best way to make it with no moving parts).

YOOO THIS VIDEO IS AWESOME
I wonder if there is a way you could get sneaky with the mesh and edit it at runtime based off the camera position and orientation so that no matter where you look, it keeps the illusion 👀

I expected that to be honest. But probably Unity is not the right choice for that project because there won't be a "real" 3d model but it's all about the perspective
No thanks, I’d rather take the elevator 😎

elevators are a lie, they don't exist
If you want to actually see a functioning structure like this, go to ZenoTheRogue's channel and look at some of their videos on the topic. They used geometry that isn't Euclidean (namely, nil space), which naturally facilitates these sorts of things. It's like drawing a square circle using a sphere, so you might want to specify to a bunch of gods to not do that next time you ask them :P
I appreciate Tanner for all the effort he put in to show us this! You also did a pretty good job, I guess. Also, I love how it's done in Inception, but of course movie magic is a whole different story lol
2:08 btw there are now AI that estimate the depth of images (MiDaS, DPT large, ClipDrop relight), you can throw penrose stairs at those and view them in 3d with vertex meadow or depth player, it generally interprets the stairs as either totally flat or the front flat and the back being sloped up/down
Haha that ending tho
Hey Jabrils, great concept for the video! I thought you were going to make the top left portion of the picture into "like a portal" and have the area reflected like a mirror so that if you look up or down to the other corner of the map that you would be able to see yourself. It'd be cool if you could figure out how to do something like that and decide how the map will be cut in half for the mirror.
Idk why I didn't get this recommended, I found this from your shorts
This is sooooo cool! I've been obsessed with this staircase since I was little, but this is such a clean solution. And the aesthetics you chose for the building are great too, I'd love to walk around up there.
Not a drawing... lithograph 😆🙂 love yah Jabril
I thought you'd make a video where if you turned one way, the stairs went up, but if you turned the other way, the stairs went down, using 3D environment trickery (like with portals or something).
The fact you did this better than a professional 3d model is funny af
Does the video randomly cut off at the end for anyone else?
Love the first person cam at the end.
Wow what a coincidence, I was looking for the channel yesterday after a while. good video
Huge effort on the mouth animations man. Well done!
Ayo where are them uploads. I love your overall vibe. It’s kind of sad that the algorithm doesn’t boost your stuff even though you deserve it.
I could swear this is a reupload
The proper way to do it is make it infinite, but not technically a staircase. The "staircase" is laying flat, but the stairs are at an angle to make it look like a staircase.

Exactly. This is just the illusion, but you have to walk the fake connection instead of teleporting. With a variable direction for gravity you could even gradually change the angle of the stairs and have the whole transition feel almost completely natural; or you could just lock the camera to always be the same angle relative to the surface you are standing on.
I'm here because of Mark Rober. Your video with him on stealing baseball signs was great. Your infinite staircase video looks awesome. I've subscribed now to your channel.
The sequel everybody gave up on waiting for
Just watched the other infinite stair video and was so happy that you got another one! Love the illusion content :)
Great video.... But uhhhm.... Y-you just made normal stairs... And a ramp
Wow.... I was watching you 4 years ago when I first got interested into coding, I last interest and am now coming back. Its crazy to see the progress you've made, you had 35k subs last I remeber seeing. Good shit
Cool stuff! Here’s a tip that might save time in the future. For blocky shapes like the steps, it’s usually easier to start by modeling a boxy shape with right angles, then add and subtract from it using the extrude tool. Also, since a lot of the steps are exactly the same, you can copy and paste them.
This is awesome!
There IS actually a way to make a TRULY looping staircase, but it involves bent space-time and non-euclidean geometry. There is a mathematician called ZenoTheRogue who made a simulation of this bent space: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqmmuqOhdtXTm6g.html The only problem is, that if you tried to walk these stairs, you would throw up due to the extreme space deformation.
i rate this video at one jabrillion points MMMM
You back 😁
Dope.💥
Bro you've upgraded 🙌🏽 Awesome
HES BACK
What is you make the stairs totally flat and use a normal map to make it look 3d and make it look like it's going up?
Everyone knows a guy like Tanner
the KSP music in the intro activated a special sort of nostalgia in me. just hijacking this comment section to say i cant wait for ksp2 guys lol
Awesome video!
What if the stairs themselves were flat, you never actually go up, but each step slants very gradually so it feels like another step up
Amazing
Could the stairs be at an angle to make this possible while being flat and then rotate the whole world under the player so it always looks like the part they're on is flat? Or maybe switching out the place with the ramp at the exact right moment to another model
I found ur channel from the asylum one & im so thankful i did, subscribed!
Nil geometry is pissed rn
YOOOO THAT MERCH LOOKS SIIIIICK
I loveee the glasses, also great video! It always floors me how goddamn multitalented you are my guy. 👏👏
I approve.
Don’t trip tanner
A certain PSP game basically does this illusion for solving puzzles
Nice vid
welcome back
This whole video is an illusion. This man's mouth moves.
best video I’ve ever seen
Why wipe the chair? Those cabbage and bean burritos again?
The gap thing is one of those solutions that's so painfully fucking simple but I'm stupid and would never have been able to figure it out
Hi jabril ,,, ilove yuor video sir
Bro, what do ya do for a living ?
It's really weird seeing you in sync with the narration, ngl.
thats interesting
What if you put a running belt like the ones in the airports, on the ramp.
hey hey nice video!
I dont see one staircase but a dozen building parts with stairs on the roof. How about moving each segment up and down at various controlled speds to create the ilusion of always walking up the stairs?
He keeps on giving
"Ever heard of physics? Have some respect" 2D VTubers be like, "nah physics be overrated"
What about a rotating staircase with stairs angled inwards that would adjust the corner you were on to always make the next set of steps be uphill
What happened to the sentdex video??? It's no longer on the channel
love ir boots 😃😃
YASSSS
Last time I saw your video, you used to narrate your videos.
What’s the song for the first 20 seconds of the video?
Yes
I had a question related to this in my exam 😢 I fucked up lol
I think you can do better. For instance, a circle doesn't have to be 360°. Screw around with dimensions and you won't have to cheat!
Why not make the ramp look like stairs?
When you coming back
oooouuuuiiiii
This is math
KZread come on bell has been click since i subbed over a year ago and yet still i get NO notifications from this channel....
How are you moving your mouth like that ???
noo re poco reach pobre :(
Looks weird to see his mouth move
another way to do it is by making gravity fields that change gravity at different locations, like super mario galaxy. with this it would also work with physics objects and water physics.
Seeing you mouth move feels weird.
ngl you kinda fell off
