    Neat video! I was expecting that each stair was slanted rather than parallel with the ground plane. So although there's a step up, the Y increase of the step is then removed by the slant of the step.

    I'm an architect in training and I can sympathize. Modeling stairs that actually work is tough as-is. Stairs like this, not fun at all lol. I've gotta add that you could totally make these in real life, but probably not legally. That ramp would need to be a lot longer and less steep to meet code requirements. It'd probably need several landings too. So that might break the illusion right there. Could be a fun project though, "ADA Compliant infinite stairs"

    Add a speed ramp to the slope so that Tanner walks it faster. Then the weird stopping effect in that one part would stop.

    Yeah, though I would think that would just be like the teleportation problem he mentioned with extra steps. He wants the staircase with no strings attached that you can build in the real world (and this would be the best way to make it with no moving parts).

    I wonder if there is a way you could get sneaky with the mesh and edit it at runtime based off the camera position and orientation so that no matter where you look, it keeps the illusion 👀

    If you want to actually see a functioning structure like this, go to ZenoTheRogue's channel and look at some of their videos on the topic. They used geometry that isn't Euclidean (namely, nil space), which naturally facilitates these sorts of things. It's like drawing a square circle using a sphere, so you might want to specify to a bunch of gods to not do that next time you ask them :P

    2:08 btw there are now AI that estimate the depth of images (MiDaS, DPT large, ClipDrop relight), you can throw penrose stairs at those and view them in 3d with vertex meadow or depth player, it generally interprets the stairs as either totally flat or the front flat and the back being sloped up/down

    Hey Jabrils, great concept for the video! I thought you were going to make the top left portion of the picture into "like a portal" and have the area reflected like a mirror so that if you look up or down to the other corner of the map that you would be able to see yourself. It'd be cool if you could figure out how to do something like that and decide how the map will be cut in half for the mirror.

    I thought you'd make a video where if you turned one way, the stairs went up, but if you turned the other way, the stairs went down, using 3D environment trickery (like with portals or something).

    The proper way to do it is make it infinite, but not technically a staircase. The "staircase" is laying flat, but the stairs are at an angle to make it look like a staircase.

  • @Arkios64

    @Arkios64

    Exactly. This is just the illusion, but you have to walk the fake connection instead of teleporting. With a variable direction for gravity you could even gradually change the angle of the stairs and have the whole transition feel almost completely natural; or you could just lock the camera to always be the same angle relative to the surface you are standing on.

    Cool stuff! Here’s a tip that might save time in the future. For blocky shapes like the steps, it’s usually easier to start by modeling a boxy shape with right angles, then add and subtract from it using the extrude tool. Also, since a lot of the steps are exactly the same, you can copy and paste them.

    There IS actually a way to make a TRULY looping staircase, but it involves bent space-time and non-euclidean geometry. There is a mathematician called ZenoTheRogue who made a simulation of this bent space: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqmmuqOhdtXTm6g.html The only problem is, that if you tried to walk these stairs, you would throw up due to the extreme space deformation.
