Welcome to BAARLE, a unique and fascinating village located on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium. In this video, my local friend Bram and I take you on a journey through the streets of Baarle, exploring its rich history, culture, and unique characteristics.
As we walk through the village, you'll notice that the border between the two countries is not always clear, with some houses and even streets divided between the Netherlands and Belgium. This is due to a series of land disputes and treaties dating back to the Middle Ages, which have resulted in the unusual configuration of Baarle.
But Baarle is not just about its border and history, the village offers a wonderful array of cultural experiences from live music, theater and art events. Some of the local festivals and events you can expect to find include the annual cherry blossom festival, where you can enjoy live music, food and activities for the whole family, and the Christmas market, which is a perfect place to find unique gifts and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
We also take you to some of the most beautiful and interesting places in and around Baarle. From the St. Willibrordus church, which dates back to the 11th century, to the nearby nature reserve, where you can enjoy a peaceful stroll or bike ride.
This video is a must-see for anyone interested in history, culture, and unique experiences. So hit the subscribe button and join us as we discover the hidden gems of Baarle, a village like no other.
PS - The highlight of the story was visiting 97-year-old bartender, Nel, who has been working at the same bar for over 70 years! Can you believe that? If you ever visit Baarle, please visit her and tell her that I say hi!

The biggest benefit my Belgian father had, 35 years ago, was that diabetic products like jam were free and cheap available in the Netherlands but expensive and only available in the pharmacy in Belgium. We lived near Baarle and grocery shopping was cheaper in the Dutch stores because of the lower taxes, clothing sales were also cheaper because in the Netherlands shops are allowed to sell at the wholesale price, in Belgium you always need to sell with a profit.

@@ihakker1416 that's because Dutch and English are both Germanic languages, it's hard to learn when your main language is French as thats a Roman language (i think that's pretty obvious tho) another thing is, that Flemish people get pretty much forced to learn French in school, while the people in Wallonia get to choose wether they want to learn Dutch or not, if they also learned Dutch in kindergarten or elementary school they'd probably be much better at English aswell

One important factor is that like in Scandinavia, in NL and Flanders TV programmes for all ages are shown in the original language so they watch a lot of US and British content in the original language, with subtitles in Dutch. Whereas in countries where the language is French, German, Spanish or Italian they don't as programmes and films are dubbed in the language of that country, so speakers of those languages tend not to have that advantage and their English is as a rule not as good as in Flanders, NL and Scandinavia. I'm pretty sure that in the French speaking part of Belgium they watch English language programmes on TV dubbed in French, hence you will meet francophone Belgians who don't speak English whereas pretty much all Flemish Belgians do speak English.

Beautiful ! Cheers From Laeken audherghem brussels Belgium.
Amazing video. Glad to hear the bar owner is doing well. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Fantastic Video!! Bram is fantastic and wearing a Brighton & Hove Albion FC T-shirt! I didn’t expect that as I’m a BHA FC myself!! I live in Aachen Germany that borders The Netherlands and Belgium! Vaalserberg also has three borders in one place. 🇩🇪🇧🇪🇳🇱🇪🇺

Greetings from Cebu, Philippines! This particular video fascinated me so much! Thanks Drew for bringing geography, culture, geo-politics etc. into social media! I admire your bravery when you stayed in dangerous places! Stay safe always.
It was great showing you around mate! Untill next time!

@@bramvanbeurden731 by the way, I am curious to know how much Belgian and Dutch culture overlap at the border. What do you think?
@bramvanbeurden731

@@xavierlauzac5922 there is a lot of overlap indeed, Belgian and Dutch culture arent that different anyway. Historically speaking it was one big 'country'. The southern provinces of the Netherlands are jokingly named 'the bufferzone' between Netherlands and Belgium hahahah
Just wow! And the most amazing segment was the one on which you encounter that nearly 96 years old rocking Lady at bar. She rocks💓
This youtuber is awesome! And omg so much empathy ❤❤❤❤❤❤ instant subscribe!
Aww Drew that was nice at the end, who knew before, that you were so soft hearted ? But seriously, good video. And I have a feeling you’d fit in very well in the NL after seeing your videos from here. Can’t say that for everyone that visits.
Drew, your videos are always so well edited, both informative, funny, touching, political when needed. And you have such a friendly and open way of handling the locals and people you meet. I'm a Belgian guy who met you in Prague this summer. I was kinda shy and didn't want to bother you, so I didn't keep you longer then a short chat and a selfie. But I was amazed by how friendly you were. Many thanks for visiting Baarle, greetings from Ghent! And lots of love to the dutch! 🇳🇱 🇧🇪
Drew, this was so cool that you spended time in the south of Netherlands. Most people don't come there. First whit our red hair festival (I'm a dutch red one to) and now at Baarle Nassau. I see you had fun and was amazed by how things work there
My kids made it on your video! They searched almost every day since they met you that day.
I love stuff like this, at the dutch/belgian border its a mess at some places down south almost as bad as in Baarle. Keep up the great content and hope u enjoy your time in both countries.
There is actually a point in the world where you can be in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands at the same time.

Thank you for this video. I've been living in Eindhoven 9 years nearly and I've always wondered about this strange/confusing part of the map. Thanks for breaking it down so simply (Dutch/Belgian type of simple)
I visited my friend in Baarle Hertog in 2016 but didn't manage to explore more of this unique municipality. Thanks Drew for doing this video
Hi man! I live in the Netherlands and I like your videos. You’re doing a great job 👏🏻
I live on the border of the Netherlands and Germany in glanerbrug(Nederland) right next to gronau(duitsland) and the way the Belgians Co exists is so different to how we do it

I was also fascinated by this town when I visited, but your video was much better than my video from the place and I even learned some new things about the town. Amazing place!
It must be so fun to watch Netherlands vs Belgium football matches in the bars there! And I wonder if some of the people born in Baarle support Netherlands and Belgium?
@littleprincess8526

Both I think. There are a lot of Belgians who support the Dutch team too. Fun thing when they lost against Czechia in the Euros, Belgians were screaming come on vuile Hollandse hoeren which means dirty Holland whores 😂 There is a lot of teasing like this going on but Dutch can take a joke like we take their jokes
your videos make me happy, your so full of energy its so funny to see how you enjoy a simple waffle we in the netherlands and belgium eat those things all the time haha! great video
Great video! Thanks!
crazy that you went here man, i live nearby and watch allot of your videos. amazing to see!
I'm in Baarle-Nassau a few times each month for work. Sometimes I'm driving in both countries at the same time because the border splits the road in half. :) And as you have seen yourself, no issues with border crossings. Which would basically be impossible to guard anyway because there's so much border there. :P
I'm from The Netherlands and I love the way you vlog this it's awesome vey interesting. We also have a place with 3 lands point The Netherlands, Belguim and Germany. Hope you can visit that too. Love you Drew and your Filipina gf and your little puppy♥️♥️♥️

Fun to see you at Baarle! I live in Breda, and a lot of people from my school came from Baarle. If you have some time, come visit Breda! It's a beautiful and vibrant city, the 9th biggest in the Netherlands, and I'd love to show you around :)
