This Bell & Ross Watch is Cheeky But We LOVE It | Watchfinder & Co.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

You don’t need twenty-twenty vision to spot that the Bell & Ross BR 05 looks a little bit-well, a lot a bit-like Audemars Piguet’s pivotal Royal Oak. It’s as obvious as the sky being blue, the grass being green and the waiting list at Rolex being long. Question is-does it matter?

    I agree. And I dont really get the hate. Make an integrated bracelet blue dial sports watch and everyone cries copy, regardless of how much it actually looks like anything else. Four screws are a B&R thing, as is being angular. The blue dial isn't textured like a RO. It's got Arabic numerals, the indices are different, the bracelet is completely different. It's more B&R than anything else.

    No it doesn’t, it was inspired by Jet Instruments and Gerald’s design along with the perfection of it design from previous BR-0X. Why only compare it to RO or Nautilus, why not Polo, Hawk, Laureato, Datejust, Constellation, or Octo. Because people who made this controversy are new to horlogerie world. That’s got something to do with how long have you got into Wristwatch?

    @@beluwuga Because its not just "inspired" but outright copying core elements of the design. The bracelet is a direct rip-off of the Nautilus and the bezel that of the royal oak. Its not a case of similarities or inspirations as with other more respectable brands: you compare the AP royal oak, the Patek Nautilus and the IWC Ingenieur there are clearly the same DNA in them, but they aren't direct clones of each other. Bell & Ross are basically Invicta with a higher price tag. B&R lacks any originality or true identity in their designs - all of their aviation designs are derivatives of their former manufacturing partner, Sinn, and now that they have moved into more nautical watches they have stuck to form and again stolen designs rather than coming up with something new.

    Bracelet? Sure... Angular case with screws on top? Sure... But that's about where I draw the line of similarities with an AP to be honest. I just don't see it as a fake/copy in the extent you do... They ended up with a look that I don't find very appealing but it's one of those that's pretty polarizing, so some will love it I'm sure. To each their own.

    It's because everyone who knew two things about watches got their panties in a twist when this B&R came out, about it being a shameless rip-off. However, it appears WF wants to make two points: A) Even if it is a design rip-off, it's not the first, not the most prominent, not the last, etc. And B) It's really more an homage (in the strict sense of the word), and that just maybe that's actually a good thing. I understand though that it's a bit frustrating that there are virtually no finer details about the B&R mentioned in this video.

The bracelet looks closer to the one from the nautilus, the numbers look more like a panerai and in this case we could even agrue that the square case is copied from Cartier Santos. But Royal Oak.. reall struggling to see it

    While the Royal Oak was indeed a masterpiece of design it didn't spring from nowhere, or anything like it. The late 60's early 70's was a hotbed of new design language in watches. The French brand LIP were far more adventurous than any of the Swiss and Genta certainly didn't innovate integrated steel bracelets. The AP stuck out because it was a luxury watch in steel by a brand like AP that didn't look like your grandfather's watch. It didn't exist in a vacuum. It was also - and contrary to popular web belief - not because of the so called "quartz crisis". That hadn't happened yet and it was far less a quartz crisis than a digital quartz(and currency exchange rates) crisis. Indeed the Swiss were well invested in quartz since the mid 60's and were pushing the tech hard at the time(inc AP). Not that their current marketing would lead you to believe that. The originally large quartz movements of the time informed the design of watches. It was the start of the bigger watches for men(though didn't last long as movements got smaller). As for copying design; that has _always_ gone on in the watch business. "Trench watches" of the early 20th century all look very similar. Then art deco tanks all look very similar. Then pilot's watches all look very similar. Then divers... etc. So soon after the RO was out you had very similar steel hexagonal bezels with screws designs coming out from a few brands(The Omega Mariner an obvious one). Then Patek "copied" it by getting the same designer to do a variation on the theme with the Nautilus. These are fashionable items driven by fashion.

    Awesome comment. I just can't get on board with this watch. The PP, GP, VC, IWC, Rolex, Chopard, Piaget, unless I'm wrong, came from the 70s, almost creating "The Genta Movement". This came from nothing.

  • @MrGrentch

    @MrGrentch

    @@scottlalonde2878 Pretty much Scott. Too often these days there is internet watch lore which gets repeated so often it becomes fact(with many brands backing it up for marketing purposes) and then we have actual historical fact around watch design and development which often differs and sometimes to a surprising degree. The early 60's and 70's had big changes in design and fashion and that extended to watches across all brands. The higher end and usually conservative brands tended to be the last to get into it. If the AP/Genta design had been for a mid tier or entry level brand few would have even noticed it. For a brand like Rolex who were and remain extremely conservative(and were very much mid tier back then) the 70's was one of the few times in their history where they took design chances. By the late 70's they had to as sales of Swiss mechanical watches fell off a cliff. They even internally trialled a Rolex digital. They did develop their Rolex quartz movement which ironically was of a higher fit, finish, quality and innovation than their mechanical movements of the time.

    @@MrGrentch Another interesting comment, thank you. To my taste, the 70s weren't that great with the watch designs. You mentioned the Rolex Oyster quartz, and that's one I had a crush on. The style and yes that high quality movement. I hear it had quite the loud tick, think I would enjoy that. Thanks again.

  • @MrGrentch

    @MrGrentch

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@scottlalonde2878 Yeah a pretty loud tick alright and the movement IMHO was about the highest quality production run Rolex movement of their 20th century history. Though that actually wouldn't have been too hard. Rolex movements could be decidedly mid tier and lower end mid tier at that. Robust yes, but overly thick, sloppily finished, sometimes scarily bad quality control and with little or no innovation. That they were able to get chronometer certs for them is impressive considering that.

But then again, it's B&R DNA all over, squared case, round dial, exposed screws, it very uch is a B&R watch and not so much a homage. Also did AP come up with it or did Genta did? Did PP copy AP or did Genta copy himself?
