but he can also flip the disarm switch in midair and the quad will disarm the second he goes for a dive and lowers the throttle under -95 haha, so a sequence on top of that would be the best, that you can only disarm when throttle is low at first and then the switch is flipped

Totally agree, if you set it up based on throttle, accidentally disarm via 2 pos switch the quad will keep flying until you drop the throttle under 95 🥲 The only time I ever deem having a multipart disarm/arm procedure is when I'm flying any of my heavy lift capable shit & I have it set to arm based on a 3 pos switch being all the way down and then a 2 pos flipped. I've only accidentally disarmed twice 🤷‍♂️ just finished a build and set the aux the channels wrong once & the other time I was super stoned and can't really give a logical explanation 🤣

If you are concerned about accidently disarming, then you need to move your arm switch. Its why I don't use shoulder or corner switches because that is where my fingers rest on the radio. I use the switches above my index fingers, which are obviously on my sticks if I am flying. Have to take my finger off the throttle to disarm.

I have the arm switch setup to only engage, when the momentary switch (TRN) is held at the same time. Disarming is the unaltered, to allow quick disarming. While I only added this after accidentally arming a quad while carrying it, it has prevented accidents since then.

I have the same setup, with some extra logic. My arm switch has to be in the arm position. That makes a prearm beep so I know I've done it. Next, throttle has to be low to arm. Then, I use my momentary switch to arm, but I have to hold it for 0.3 seconds, which further prevents me from accidentally arming. When I want to arm, I can do it quickly, but three distinct things (pre-arm, throttle zero, hold arm) have to happen. Oh, and also it'll say "throttle warning" if I try to arm when the throttle is high, so I know why it didn't arm.

  • @cu3d

@@MarkJaquith This also sounds like a very safe option :) Mine actually works the other way around: Only, if the Momentary switch is held down first with the arm switch toggled at the same time it arms. So If I bump the arm switch to on and afterwards the momentary it does not arm the quad.

In my experience, FreeFly multirotors have something similar - you cannot disarm the aircraft unless you have the momentary switch pulled up. This is because when you’re flying an aerial platform that is potentially carrying $50,000+ of camera equipment, accidentally disarming - especially when you might be flying over the people/things you’re filming - can actually be more dangerous than being able to disarm immediately. Of course, this is a completely different scenario than a typical 5” quad will fly in, but that is one pretty good reason to have a setup like this.

Some part of my brain told me to disarm my quad to shed some height.. somehow I established the presence of mind to re-arm my quad as I was tumbling from the sky, and by some miracle I must have been close to level when I got the arm switch flipped because I actually leveled out (horizon mode) and was able to resume flying. I have a two-step sequence where I hold two switches up for three seconds & then, let go of one switch to arm. All this does is unlock my controls, but the motor is not started. To start the motor, I flip one of the switches that I used to arm (which starts the motor) & then, I'm ready for takeoff. In the context of helicopters, if the motor is accidentally switched off in mid-flight, I can easily do an autorotation & safely glide the helicopter in to land. Quads, on the other hand, the very second the motors stop spinning, they literally drop out of the sky.

I put the left switch (same as JB usually uses) in arm or disarm position, but it only enables that position when you flick the right momentary switch. I can do this pretty fast too, if needed. The way I did it was using a global variable. To apply to this logic.. The mix of the Arm channel uses MAX of GV1. Special functions cause GV1 to go +100 or -100 based on logic switches or physical switches. Since I was using momentary, I also created logical switches with Edge function.

Even unpowered gliders can be relatively complicated with conditional flight modes with mixing, timing, delay and expo, programmed solely in the radio.

There is a fault in how the 'disarm' mixer was set - it actually needs to be "-200%" if you want disarm to be low, arm to be high, since MAX pegged the mix to 100%, so a weight of -100% only took it down to 0% (mid channel), not -100%, as you can see at 7:02 if you watch the mixer and channel output bars at the top of the screen... Also, there is actually no need to set two mixer lines - you could use a single mixer line, and have it hooked to the logical switch directly... makes life a bit easier. But it wouldn't have allowed you to demonstrate replaceable mixer lines linked to switches. I've seen a few takes on non-direct arm/disarm - Mr D's "Open TX Ultimate Arm Switch" which uses logical switches, GVs and even a curve to set the disarm state... which also allows for preventing arming when the throttle is up, and feedback from the transmitter at every state (arm, disarmed, can't arm until throttle low, can't disarm until throttle low), and John over at rcvideoreview's has done a "safer throttle cut" version that won't let you arm the throttle unless the throttle is low. I use a version of that myself as it allows for zero bounce landings since I can enable the disarm during the landing approach (and get audio feedback that it's going to trigger), and then when I drop the throttle it cuts instantly. I do understand your concerns, as with inexperienced pilots it's easy to panic... but to me this allows all the safeties on the FC to do their job, and the transmitter is doing it's job in telling the craft to do what I want it to do. It is a preference. If I was concerned about needing a real "emergency stop" - as that is what we're really talking about, I would probably do something like use the crow feet 6POS on the tx16 as that's basically impossible to hit in flight by accident, or maybe the T5/T6 trims as a momentary switch. It just seems so easy (and is - I've done it twice) to bump one of the other switches when moving your hands in cold weather (i.e. impaired feeling) and disarm in a unrecoverable manner. Most of the time, it's all good... but then there's that time it goes horribly wrong. What really annoys me is both a friend I have camera quads with GPS position hold, return to home, basically can fly themselves better than the monkey behind the joystick... but the emergency motor cut is utter garbage... you're supposed to hold the button for three seconds and it will cut the motors... except when you actually need to use it... it has usually already hit whatever you were trying to not hit, and the emergency cut then won't engage... how stupid is that! MJX really need to do better with their Bugs series!

It sure would be nice to have support for arbitrary expressions instead of all that black magic. Here's how this could look: ARM = ARM ? ((!SF && THR The syntax is open to debate. But the idea is that you would specify the next value of a particular channel (or mix or whatever) based on the current value of any channel (etc) - including the channel itself (equivalent to sticky logical switches).

This quad accomplishes that using camera uptilt feature. It flips an aux mode to enable camera uptilt of 90 degrees, which effectively flips yaw and roll. kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6idk62FqZiwkqg.html&ab_channel=JoshuaBardwell You could also do it in the mixer screen, using the Switch parameter. Put both yaw and roll on the same 2 channels and use the Switch parameter to decide which is active.

I found it is very dangerous to use disarm switch. Instead I use motor interlock feature of the ardupilot (refer to kzread.info/dash/bejne/X3iWltdxfK2rZdo.html for more details). Essentially it is momentary turn off/on all copter's engines at any given point in time. It does _not_ disarm the copter. Even if you accidentally turn them off in flight, you can just turn them on immediately. My take off sequence looks like: 1) arm, 2) motor interlock on. Landing sequence is - just disarm after land.

It's not really an oversight when you think about it... a switch has known states - high/low or high/mid/low... whereas a pot is 0 - 100 ... so how does the TX know at what point do you want the SF to trigger? Thus you need to use a logical switch, to trigger when your pot is in your chosen on position, and for the SFs you can then use the logical switch (i.e. L01) for the on state, and the inverse for the off state (!L01) if just wanting two positions, or use multiple LS lines to emulate a multi-position switch.
