This Aquarium Filter HAS NOT been cleaned in OVER A YEAR!
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
One of the drawbacks to canister filters for your fish tank, is that they are often a chore to clean. Most people don't like cleaning their aquarium filter, and when it is a canister filter, it is sometimes more work so people neglect it and do not clean it for a long time. In this video, I show you what happens when you don't clean your canister filter for over a year.

Cleaning and reinstalling the clean filter gives you a feeling which can't be defined in words 😄
Zenzo...I laughed out loud the whole time you were taking that can apart. Most of us that have been in the hobby a long time (over 40 years for me) have faced the "poop bomb" more than once...we just don't admit it. LOL! Thanks for sharing this video, I feel like it is very educational....not to mention hilarious!
Absolutley love filter cleaning videos, they are so satisfying. Time to do mine

This was a great video, and honestly it reinforced my routine of canister maintenance every 6-8 weeks. lol
Filter cleaning videos are always so satisfying.
Just bought a used Fluval 306 a couple of weeks ago, not sure when the previous owner last cleaned it so will clean in the next few weeks, so now I know what I get to look forward to,lol! Actually doesn't look terribly difficult or time consuming but I definitely want to clean the intake and exhaust tubes and hoses out well while I'm at it. Great video, your canister actually wasn't as disgusting as I envisioned.
I know this video is 3 years old as of my writing this comment, but I wanted to add my input. I have about 15 years' experience in the hobby. I've kept one tank at a time and up to thirty tanks at a time. I've learned many things about filters. 1. Stop buying those pre-made cartridges if you have a hang-on-the-back (HOB) filter. They are a waste of money. Buy individual filter media such as sponges, filter floss, bioballs, ceramic pellets, etc. Also, look into safe alternatives to these they are cheaper. For example, I use pillow stuffing and pantyhose instead of filter floss and filter media bags. 2. Stop changing your filter media every month. Good filter media can and should last years. In my current tank, I've had the same filter media since 2018. It's September 2022 now. 3. You don't need to clean your filter media unless the flow is reduced, it's spewing debris back into the tank, there's a swampy smell, if your water parameters such as ammonia are off, if you've had a major illness in the tank, or if you're overfeeding (stop that). I last cleaned my filter media this week, but it had been a year since before that and before that I hadn't cleaned it since December 2018. I only cleaned it then after a 1600-mile move and a plant die off. People tend to over-worry about filters. I could make an hour-long video about filters. Remember, as long as it seems to be doing its job, leave it alone. Test your water occasionally with a proper test kit. Make sure your fish aren't getting sick or dying. And if there are no weird smells or reduced flow, leave it be.
I use bio home ultimate in my canister and two different filter pads. Tried different medians and watched pimp my filter. What a big difference. Love my set up now.
Wicked WOW, 13months, that's so awesome, that's correct for the more experienced hobbyist it's normal yet for the beginner its hard work for an individual to do it....anyway thank you for your time MR. Zenzo 😎😎😎😎
Great video. Thank you!
Great video as always.
Lolol Braddah Zenzo this Video was awesome “What are those” and it’s awesome to see a canister filter not cleaned in an entire year fascinating lololol 🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
Nice video ! I have a video setting up a sunsun filter and i haven’t changed that in about 7 months . When i finally did some cleaning it wasn’t much . All it filters tho is a flowerhorn
Great video Z those shell dwellers were so cool
I liked the vid bro...!!! Your tanks always look amazing
We’ve gone this long before too....mostly it’s just whether you’re over feeding or not....nice video....👍
Could you set up a drip or additional plant filter to reduce your water changes like shop you showed in the other video?
I cleaned mine and it was pretty clean after a year with a highly stocked predator tank
nice video!!! and how do you feel about Fluval filter's quality?
Great video brother 👍
I learnt a lot from this video. Thanks
What do you feed your oscar. Both of mine used to gobble down everything. Now not so much. Great video!
If you're asking how I hot rod of it I used a course intake sponge from aquarium co-op.com and I have used their really coarse sponge pads and they never clog
Sweet video mate 👍👌
Do u clean the pipes? I find after i clean my filter, when it's all put back together again and turn it on the tank gets flooded with crap.

@notkerrystolcenberg

Is that because of the pipes? Or the walls/bottom of the filter?
i have a single oscar in a 55 gal tank with a fluval 306. the fish is only 5 inch rn. how often should i clean the filter and water change?
That's a long time, but fishes seem healthy.... Think maybe every 6 months....but I never had a canister filter before, use HOB which I clean every 2-3 months. Great vid.

sponges on the bottom facing the wrong way, water flows up from bottom to to top.. dimples in the sponges should be face down.. no biggie just sayin..
@JaredByer

I was going to say the same thing. The dimples provide more surface area for the water to hit directly, so it will take longer to clog.

I have a Fluval 406 and cleaned it last night. I took out the carbon that was in one of the baskets. I am new to the hobby and I noticed that you added more media to the baskets vs the chemical filtration. I am setting up a small 20g quarantine tank and have a HOB for that. Could I just add more media into the baskets then transfer it to the HOB when needed?
@TazawaTanks

Yep, that’s a great way to have cycled media ready.
If it doesn't smell, has not turned black, it's good. I've not cleaned my pressure filters in 4 years. I do have an excellent pre-filter. And you're right everybody is commenting how clear my water looks and koi looking so vibrant and healthy. What were the parameters like and clarity shortly after cleaning after waiting that long?
subbed ! saw you with the Hawaiian Peacock, and IFG
That was weirdly satisfying
My theory on this is your fine sand bed is doing majority of the work as a deep sand bed filter . We use these in saltwater . Also pothos plants are keeping the paramiters in check . Canister is allowing the waste to break down (by not being cleaned) and makes it more available as a fertilizer for the pothos as it goes thru 3 stages of break down. Kind like macro algae does in a refugium area of a saltwater aquarium .Just my thoughts pretty cool really . I miss doing cichlids but ima coral junky so ill probably never go back . Nice tanks btw Your pretty much running the same way we do a reef
I only clean my filter out after the flow starts to slow down, normally a good indicator!
@johnfadds6089
2 жыл бұрын
You got it right. The only reason to ever clean a filter is to increase flow. And don't overclean it, that would be throwing away good bacteria
I did one of mine yesterday as well.
may i know how long do u do water changes?
when my roommate moved out and left me with his turtle tank i cleaned out the fluval 306 that hadnt been cleaned in over a year. it was at least 3 times as packed with waste as that. the flow was near a trickle with all the waste blocking it
I only change 2 gallons for each of my 10 gallons once every about month and a half. Even then it's only because I want to reintroduce some new minerals since I use 50/50 mix of tap and R/O. I squeeze out the sponge filters about every other water change maybe every three. I use 60 gallon sponge filters on them, might not be suitable for everyone's taste but I dont mind it in the back of the aquarium and can hide it pretty well with plants. On another ten gallon I have a hang on back made for a 30 gallon and a small sponge filter instead of an air stone and I change out the hang on back every 6months probably, I will ring out the pre filter if the flow slows though.
Just letting you know, 2 years later and people like me are watching. This is very helpful, thank you!

Damn 13 months that’s awesome

End of the year to clean it again?? I clean mine every 2 months and I have 2 canisters running for my 110
Bottom sponges bumpy parts Need to face towards the flow also have some filter floss on top of the bumpy foam
What about the potential for decease and fungus growth? The level of water changes definitely counteract the soil build up. But its a fine line between success and just survival or worst, even if the water is clear and "testing" well. Two months is my push limit, even though I have two FX6s on my 120. I can't let it go further in my heart and soul...lol. I almost forgot...what about the impeller and motor assembly?

@@TazawaTanks wow that is incredible!!! My motor housing got petty dirty after 6 months. It actually felt good cleaning it out ..lol.
It didn't smell, so the bacteria had done it's job. So long as the water was flowing, not a problem. Great vid.
@johnfadds6089

He overdid it, you should only squeeze out the extra "cheese" to increase flow. That is bacteria matrix, keeps your water free of organic pollutants. A couple of squeezes is good, squiky clean is bad. Luckily this wasn't one of his high stock tanks.
I clean my 207 every 3 months and it's got hardly any dirt. Sometimes I wonder if it's working ok
It is now January 2021, has this filter been cleaned since this video was made?
Looks like my fx6 That i just cleaned 3 days ago that i hadn’t cleaned in a year also 😆👍
I have hot rodded my canister units And I only clean them once a year and the less you mess with it the better
I am eating while watching this 😂
I try to never clean my filter, unless the flow drops a lot. That's because a dirty filter is actually healthy for the aquarium, when u clean it you'll cause inbalances (even if you use old tank water to do the cleaning, you still remove some of the dirt and bacteria). So basically I only clean it if I notice the flow dropping too much meaning it's clogged by something...else it does its job best when dirty...those guys telling you that you have to replace components/pads/sponges every 1 month or 2 weeks are just trying to sell you those sponges lol.
sir.. you just killed a ton of nitrobacter there... but don't worry... thousands hundred more is processing to make colony anymore... epic sir... love your video...
How does that not make your nitrates go crazy?
Everbody opens the fluval 06/07 canisters wrong your supposed to push the handles down then the top will SLIDE up so you don't have to pull up👍🏻

I have a question, you washed the pre filter sponge with a hose, why not clean those in the tank water to preserve the beneficial bacteria on those?
@TazawaTanks

If I was overly concerned with keeping the beneficial bacteria I would have. Because I have so much other media, including the sponge pre-filter (not shown in the video), I didn’t find it necessary.

why don't change the new filter?
Lol, and I worry because mine has like 3 months with out cleaning.

Imagine if it was a piranha tank? A solid block I’m sure.
Also, you should have cleaned the hoses too. That affects flow too.
Your egg crate-style sponge in the bottom tray was installed upside down.
I was gifted a 5 gal 5 Glofish tank that has not been cleaned for over a year and half the water had evaporated. The HOB filter is a National Geographic PF30. The ammonia oder could wake the dead. The inside of the filter had a thick clear slime on the sponge and charcoal filter. I did not know what to do. I had only had 1 gal tank Betta fish. I went to store got some water conditioner and something for ammonia. I treated 2 gal of tap water with the chemicals. I waited for the water to be room temperature. maybe 4 hours. I added the water. Two days later I changed 1 gal. 2 days later I changed 1 gal. The odor disappeared on the 5th gal. I bought a vacuum. I vacuumed. The water got cloudy for 5 1 gal water changes over 14 days. I then rinsed the 2 filters in tank water. Then the problems stared.
Your sponges look like the old lung cancer adds we had in Australia. Thanks Zenzo
