I have no doubt that this will be one of your top anime of all time! It's now picking up and I can't wait for you to start season 2! You will love it. This show is so well written. FYI: This season is animated by studio WIT which also animated AoT season 1-3. Season 2 will be , like Aot from season 4 on, be animated by MAPPA.

I love how everyone goes from "I love how Thorfinn is getting stronger and killing all these dudes" at the start of this episode to the realization of how messed up it is and that he is becoming everything that Thors didn't want for his son. This show does such a great job of never letting you forget that Thorfinn is no hero for fighting on the battlefield, and that he is causing lots of pain and suffering to innocent people all for his goal of getting revenge.

The thing with Askeladd making that chopping gesture at his neck is basically him saying to Thorfinn "What, don't you want your chance to take my head?" Or to put it another way, he's saying "You have to do what I say if you want to get yet another chance to duel me and kill me. If you want my head, go do what I say."

It just gets better from here on. This show is goated for many reasons and the OST just gets better each EP. I feel so bad for Thorfinn.. He kills a person when he's around like 6, 7 years old. Now he lost his innocence and his quest for vengeance has only started.

Thorfinn is such a good kid with behavioral issues... like, even before all this, he shows that kids are only as innocent as the stuff they've absorbed and are parroting. if the people in their community glorify violence, then the kid will think its second nature as a response. and even after all of this, Thorfinn is still operating with the mind of a child. he told the woman to run... why didn't she run? he doesn't get it. there's a lot of stuff that Thorfinn doesn't understand, because the only thing he's being properly taught, is how to survive the life he's living. kids who grow up in bad households, and learn from bad people, and have behavioral issues because of it, can be really hard to sympathize with. sometimes they will act like little assholes, because where were they supposed to learn how to behave better? I love season 1 Thorfinn with all my heart... he's so wonderfully difficult, and I love that Makoto Yukimura wrote a story about him.

The show of emotions on the characters faces is underrated. It is hard to catch when you are reading the subs but it is done perfect with the OSTs. Most animes would just have the character tell you how they feel... Vinland Saga is made for people with more mature understanding of situations.

0:46 or 1:56 this pronunciation is probably the most common, and the simplest, and it's the one I use... it's the pronunciation where it sounds how it looks. other pronunciations are maybe a bit more literal when it comes to the name's etymology, but I think it's just easier to say it how it's spelled... and neither way is actually wrong. I think that moment where Askeladd stabs the guy on top of Thorfinn is a great visual metaphor for their relationship at this stage. like, at this point Askeladd has given Thorfinn several opportunities to live, when he could've let him die, and several pieces of advice that have served him functionally, when he's put them into practice. but also, I would not consider what Askeladd does to be "care" in the traditional sense... and the advice he's given Thorfinn has led him to that brutal moment of his first human kill, where he's basically unsupervised on a proving ground, and encouraged to take that next step toward the brutality that these men call normal. I think what we're seeing is Askeladd upholding his deal with Thors, in kind of the letter of the law, if not the spirit. Thors said that if he gave his life, Askeladd should spare every other person in his crew. and sure enough, Askeladd isn't letting Thorfinn die. but even as Askeladd technically "saves" Thorfinn, by murdering a man on top of him, the sword digs into Thorfinn's body as well. the kid may be alive, true enough, but there's very little regard for how else this might be hurting him. and so, we start to get into a bit of Askeladd and Thorfinn's little ongoing arrangement. wherein Askeladd has promised Thorfinn another duel... another shot at killing him... if Thorfinn can "accomplish something great on the battlefield" first. and it's taken this much time... years of Thorfinn tagging along, and learning how to brutalize people... before Askeladd will deem him fit to even try challenging him again. I'd say Thorfinn is about 10 years old, by the time we see him appear before this woman and her daughter. at this point, keep an eye on the conditions that Thorfinn is being asked to meet, what his reward is supposed to be, and how his task is making him feel most of the time. because for as much as "kill your master to prove you have no more need of him" is a trope, Askeladd is calculated, and he doesn't let any of this get outside of his control. Thorfinn is essentially being asked to work on a vague, open ended prompt. what does "accomplish something great" actually mean? Thorfinn doesn't know. he just knows that Askeladd never thinks he's good enough. and Askeladd has strung him along with this very shitty carrot on a stick for years now. in this way, Thorfinn's whole existence is defined by striving, implicit failure, and rage. it feeds off of the very same shame he felt for having been too weak to prevent his father's death, right before his eyes. he's still too weak. he couldn't do anything. Askeladd still won't take him seriously. and if he can just kill Askeladd... if he can just get him back for the amount of pain he's caused Thorfinn... then, maybe Thorfinn won't have to feel like an utter failure about this anymore. but in the meantime, look at Thorfinn's condition. look at his injuries, his malnourishment, his poor hygiene, his ostracization from normal people... the way being treated better doesn't tempt him anymore. Thorfinn is learning to look at a better life, when it is placed right under his nose, and reject it. because it's too soft, too comfortable... too easy. Thorfinn can't have that. it's not for him. not until he finishes his mission, and proves that he's earned it back. he hardly even remembers why he might want something like this. once again, here is a ten year old child, being asked to choose between constant toil, where the _reward_ is probably an ass kicking... and a warm household, with kind and respectful people, who don't make fun of him, who feed him, and clothe him, and bathe him, and treat his wounds. by simple tally of resources gained, one should be the obvious most advantageous choice. but Thorfinn has been trained, like a dog, to see the treat in front of his nose, and not even try to eat it. because he hasn't performed enough tricks yet. he hasn't earned it, and thus, he doesn't deserve it. and the fact that this woman and her daughter are reminders of Helga and Ylva is just the cherry on top of the whole scenario. if Thorfinn can't even accept the kindness of strangers over a life of constant violence, then he definitely hasn't earned the right to go back home. but even once he does "earn" that right... can he go back home like this? how would his mother look at him, if he did? I think the most heartbreaking little detail is that, after this woman took the time to wash and brush his hair out, that's the part of him that ends up stained with blood, right off the bat. Thorfinn is a child, and he's absorbing influences that leave him without the ability to value these things... but as he reproduces the effects of how he's living, he is still hurting people. and that final shot of the broken comb lying on the ground... Thorfinn might be beyond anyone's ability to care for now.

@@GOTGames yeah, Askeladd is such a wonderfully morally muddy character. for every "nice" thing he does, there's just enough utter shit in his behavior to undercut any warm feelings you could've gotten from it. but for every "mean" thing he does, there's just enough charismatic pragmatism to temper whatever anger you might feel. it'll often leave you waffling back and forth on how you see him, and I think the story's time is well spent building him this way.

Don't forget this kind English woman, because Thorfinn's crime against her will be important to him for the rest of his life. 🥹 The essence of this anime is not to enjoy flashy battles or the battle between good and evil. What makes Vinland Saga a masterpiece is the delicate and beautiful story and music, the detailed character settings and development, the quiet expression of emotions, and the incredibly moving and deep message. So the most important thing is the little conversations between the characters! Don't miss them. This anime is like a bonfire. It starts with a small fire, slowly and gradually spreads, and at the end it burns like a big flame! 🔥 So you have to watch it until the end.

The king during the war against Swein Forkberd is known as Æthelred the unready. Which, very uncommonly among english, is a pun. Æthelred basically means, noble or good counsel and unready used to mean bad counsel, basically his name is Smart the stupid. This anime is special to me, because I am Danish. I know it's not the best showing so far, all the danes being awful murder machines and all that. Still, three of my top 20 anime characters are all in this show and you've only really seen one so far.

This journey is a heavy one, and this episode is one clear instance of that. There will be some other low points that may strike you as worse than this one, even, but it's all part of the brilliance of the story as a whole. Those of us who've seen it feel your pain just like the first time, and those of us seeing it through your reaction are feeling it too. Your reaction and thoughts have been lovely and deep, and I'm very appreciative of it. That part where Thorfinn is being taken care of by that older lady and the daughter is probably the few instances in an anime like this where if they keep it to one language (which is not either of the languages the characters speak), it can be hard to tell that, yeah one character is supposed to be speaking Danish and the others are supposed to be speaking English (well, old 11th century English at least), so it can be confusing. 25:15 well to be fair the guy is just seeing a little blonde kid. He doesn't know if he's a Dane or not.

I watched the old opening & endings, from your channel. And if you really have big battles with sword & shield with several thousand soldiers. Kingdom it is. You can watch privately 1+2 seasons because the CCI is really bad. But Season 3 and more are so good would be worth it. Not so well known Anime because of season 1+2, But you won't regit it.

The story doesn't take sides, it just shows war as it is brutal and violent for everyone involved and even the innocents caught in the crossfire. Brace yourself the ride's only just begun Also I'm not overly familiar with English History, but I do know the very basic progression of events, Island was inhabited by a subgroup of Celts, got invaded by Rome and was Romanized into the province of Britannia The Romans left due to more pressing concerns elsewhere (barbarian invasions) the Britons adopted Roman culture and sort of just kept living in the old Roman cities, Anglo Saxon invasion, the Britons get pushed to the Western Edges of the main Island (Wales) Anglo Saxons create their own kingdoms and thrive for quite a while, Vikings invade, Claim Northumbria and East Engle creating Danelaw, Danelaw collapses but Northumbria remains, Anglo Saxons attack Northumbria, the Danes respond with war - anything further would spoil the series

As a Norwegian, Askeladden is pronounced the way it's written, meaning it will sound like aske-ladden (ask-eh-la-dden) though the japanese pronounce it as Ash-e-ladd so in this case I'd say either way would be correct. Thorfinn however doesn't use the Th (f-sounding) pronounce, just straight up a T. 😊

Just a slight correction here; anime are still very constrained in terms of budget and time for animating large scale things. It usually requires a ton of cg and rotoscoping to create really large battle sequences, and those shots usually only last for a few seconds. Usually you'd just get 'stills' of these huge crowds of people, with no motion, but some sound design over it, and then a few seconds of animation here and there where you focus on a select few men in the battle with some characters drawn in the background. But those shots are also very demanding. It would be incredibly hard, costly, and time consuming to draw a full on army in a battle, in motion, and having it look good. That is more easily achieved in live action, where you have a 500 extras on a field/set.

Japanese pronounce different language names and words wrong constantly. Many sounds are not native to their tongue so have an accent when said. This is why Engrish in anime always sounds off. Aske is Ash in Danish/Norwegian. They pronounce it As-ke. The English dub does as well.
