    I think you misunderstood what Mishin meant when he called Bradie hard worker. You see in Russia promising skaters get everything for free, time on ice, high level coaches, ammunition etc. So many russian coaches including Eteri admitted the difference of non russian students that have to pay for everything on their own. While russian students even at top level can waste their training session time by pretending fixing their skates or fulling around non russian ones value every minute of training session. Russian coaches often yell at kids "work harder!". So saying about someone the he/she is a really hard worker is like a best compliment you can get.

    I think the reason why Kostonaya and Zagitova are together is that they both need later start. Kostonaya had an injury and Zagitova was in show in May-June and didn't train with the group

    Ok Shoma could have a good influence on these Eteri girls in some ways, but lets not do revisionist history here. Trusova was doing that same extended arch-back cantilever in her exhibition routine this year (go watch it if you don't believe me), she didn't just watch Shoma's and magically become better. Her one in the sp is great too but the ex one where she has time is amazing.

    I saw her in January at Mentor Cup in Toruń (the event where we saw Chock/Bates for the first time that season), she did an EX number. Lovely skater and a really cute girl, she said a few sentences in Polish and said she was very excited to be representing Poland. She actually won the Polish championships but naturally couldn’t compete internationally. Kaliszek/Spodyriev’s coach, who was running that gala, said that Katya had like 3 quads but I wasn’t sure if she was being serious. I remember Zhenya talking very warmly about her but I don’t know where I read that.

    @@Julia-js7bs Only for the Olympics do you have to be a citizen of the country you represent. To compete internationally for another country at any other competition, all you really have to do is get permission from your current country to be "released". Sometimes that can be immediate (Canadanes), or it can take years (Bruno Massot) or even never if the two countries involved have some kind of disagreement about it.

    It'll be interesting to watch how the Japanese ladies do in the Grand Prix even though Rika would likely be the only one that has the technical firepower to make the final and compete for a medal. For most of them it's more about gaining momentum and peaking for nationals, which is probably Satoko's strategy by doing Cup of China and Rostelecom back to back in November. The Kaori vs. Wakaba matchups in Skate America and France, and Satoko vs. Mai in China will be key to watch. Yuna Shiraiwa can enter the conversation if she breaks the 200 point barrier and places above Kaori or Wakaba in France or Satoko in Russia. I do hope that Rika can medal in the final, otherwise she'll lose momentum and would be at a disadvantage having to peak at nationals just two weeks later.

  • @ColonelGreen

    @ColonelGreen

    5 жыл бұрын

    As Satoko was the sixth seed, she had no choice over where she went (beyond maybe trying to talk Rika and Kaori into helping her out). She got whatever was left over. Same with Hubbell/Donohue this year; they didn't *choose* to skate back-to-back events; indeed, they might have been expecting that Sinitsina/Katsalapov would take SCI, but instead the Russians chose to skate back-to-back in China and Rostelecom, which forced H/D to do the same.

  • @blinky7046

    @blinky7046

    5 жыл бұрын

    Even so, I think the GP assignments worked out well for Satoko. It did her no good to have her best performance last year at Skate America just to finish 6th at GPF and 3rd at nationals. With an even more competitive ladies field this year, her first choice in GP events wouldn't really increase her chances at making the GPF anyway. What she can do however, is perform respectably in both GPs and use the one month break to peak at nationals to get 1st or 2nd.

    Have to disagree that Eteri won't care about Tursynbaeva anymore. She had to love everyone saying she can fix anyone (Shoma is next). And there's about a 99% chance Evgenia goes nowhere this year while Tursy is on the rise with Eteri. Nothing better than twisting the knife a bit. And she takes nothing away from any of her students either.

    The Grand Prix fields for pairs are so uneven, in part because of Vanessa and Morgan's 5th place at Worlds. Some of the fields are pretty empty and NHK Trophy is completely stacked. There has to be a better way to balance the fields.

  • @TheSkatingLesson

    @TheSkatingLesson

    Any way you slice it, it will always be somewhat unfair because the rankings are imperfect and based on three years. Vanessa and Morgan really blew it by finishing 5th at Worlds, but pairs is also rather deep with top teams.

    rusfed is pitting kosto and zagi to decide who they'll support and drop. medvedeva is always a favorite, has fed and big names backing her up and trusova is the new star, they purposefully put the "artistic vs technical" for their case. but for kosto vs zagi, kosto is always consistent and she isnt growing up so i'd say zagi is the one in danger.

The fact that Mishin used the expression "hard working" rather than "talented" says more about Mishin as a coach rather than about Bradie as a skater. (Your opinion on those two phrases also says something about you :P ) I'm sure Mishin just wanted to say something nice about Bradie. Being hard working is not a bad thing in Russian culture. He's not an English native speaker, don't analyze his English words too deeply ;)

People thought men doing triples would RUIN their bodies back in the day. Rika is doing 3A and quads, she's 16. Elizabet is 19! First Women to land a quad in senior. Evgenia is 19 going on 20 she's going to be learning a 4S. They should be given the opportunity to do them in the short. A lot more girls are going to be doing quads in the future. @@keelyfallis5927 i think since the quads are in such high concentration among the younger skaters, ISU will probably wait to see how these juniors fair in the senior level competition before allowing quads in the short. if you start allowing quads in the short when it's clearly only working for one specific body type/age group in skating, then there's a clear disadvantage for other skaters who haven't had time to grow and evolve with the sports because of course, when they were juniors, nobody was doing quads. And of course, being first in the short program can affect a lot in the long. Ladies skating is evolving, I just think disallowing quads in the short right now is allowing a smoother transition for older skaters who need to learn new elements after having skated the same elements for their entire life. Remember, this quad phenomenon is relatively new, maybe 2 years old. The ISU is just seeing whether it will last or not.

Not to forget Shcherbakova who is competing against Tuktamysheva and Tursynbaeva in both her events. I was surprised that Sotskova and Sakhanovich got one spot each. I was sure that either Anastasia Gubanova or Anna Tarusina would get two - both of them were guaranteed at least one spot as they are in the top SB24 list, but I guess Russia ran out of spots which is crazy. And after eleven consecutive years at GP, we won't see Alena Leonova this season. And btw, Butyrskaya never did Cup of Russia, another top Russian skater who just didn't want to go there.

    Saw R. Kihira at GPF and E. Medvedeva at Skate Canada last year. I think it was Jonathan who noted that R. Kihira was surprisingly not as fast as one would assume - an observation I share. She also just needs more time to be the "performer" that captivates you and makes you not want to blink (this is my opinion, at least). For sure, her jumps were great and that 3A, fabulous! But minus the 3A, I prefer M. Mihara and S. Miyahara. On the other hand, E. Medvedeva was not as lethargic on the ice as one is made to believe hearing all the criticisms about her SS. Also, she really has star quality, which, maybe is the reason why she gets all the components that many argue she does not deserve (I know PCS is not "star quality" but judges are human, it is impossible their judging would not be influenced by their impressions of a skater). She really stood out, and I feel like this carries her performance and puts her above the others.

    i've listened just one segment about trusova, and once again there's a huge dose of ignorance. does TSL have even the slightest clue about skating? trusova was not trying to immitate shoma cantilever. and shoma cantilever is not "more beautiful". it's a bullshit cantilever. he touches the ice with his arm, while trusova is doing it in a proper way, without the help of her arms, which is ten times more difficult. shoma had a proper cantilever when he was young, but now he can't do it anymore, since he's old and rusty, he's doing only an "arm version" nowdays. so what was happening in the video, sasha was riding in her cantilever and got tired, so she looked at shoma to see why he is still going, is he tired or not, then she saw that this little cheater is riding on his arm, so she did it as well. to make sure that her cantilever will last longer.
