This and That: Aljona Savchenko Returns, Love Wins for Kaitlyn Weaver and Jason Brown, Morgan Hurd

Спорт

This week, on a special Friday edition of 'This and That,' the German Skating federation announced that Aljona Savchenko was released to skate for the United States and the internet lost its collective mind when her partner was reported to be TJ Nyman. Then, Kaitlyn Weaver broke ground by coming out as a queer woman and Jason Brown responded hours later by making an announcement of his own. Meanwhile, Alexia Paganini announced a coaching change and Morgan Hurd's petition to Olympic Trials was officially denied to Olympic Trials (even though Tom Forster wouldn't admit it to the press). It's an episode you won't want to miss!

Why would an Olympic champion debase herself by pairing up with a mediocre skater who has been at the centre of sexual assault and abuse allegations. Even if he was innocent, bloody asinine decision. She will regret this.

Looks to me like ambition. She won't be able to go to the Olympics but she can go and win Worlds. Maybe she feels like the Chinese pairs are not as good as they used to be and the Russian pairs can be beaten, so she might as well stop at the grocery store on the way home and grab herself a world gold medal.

While I always loved Aljona's skating and her attitude I was never convinced that she was a good person. There was always talk about how badly Aljona and Ingo Steuer treated Robin and it was an open secret in German rinks (I'm from Germany) that they hated each other. After Sochi 2014 when it was clear that Robin didn't want to continue, Aljona and Ingo immediately looked for a new partner without telling Robin and then quickly dumped him and left him with no chance to earn any money with shows... I think in her book Aljona mentioned that she regrets how badly she handled this situation. That's why I actually thought she changed after leaving Ingo, and with her coaching environment in Oberstorf and her husband etc.... But clearly not! :( Just a few months ago when Aljona was commentating Worlds for German TV she stated that she would NEVER partner with someone other than Bruno because he is the best pair skater she could ever imagine and no one could ever replace him for her. And I thought she seemed genuine at the time. Well... and now we're here. In German we have the phrase "sie ist vom Ehrgeiz zerfressen" which basically means she is "eaten away by ambition" and that definitely seems to be the case here. It's just sad but imo she just throws away her legacy and personally I'm pretty disgusted even though - like I said - not exactly surprised.... Anyway thanks to you, Dave and Jonathan, for covering that clusterfuck so thoughtfully...! :)

Is she really throwing away her legacy? She obviously is having a hard time adjusting to no competition but she still has the ability to skate high level pairs. She won’t have this forever. She’s almost 40 years old. I support her competing as long as she can because it won’t last forever and it makes her happy.

  • @josling89

    @josling89

@@vanessaramcharan I sympathize with her missing the competitions and everything and I would happily support and admire her if she would have chosen a partner who isn't an alleged rapist! For example if she would've teamed up with Eric Radford I would totally be here for it, although the situation would still suck for Bruno and Meghan. But her choosing to ignore the allegations and doing seemingly everything just for her personal gain (although I just don't understand what she gets out of this particular partnership) is just a slap in the face of all (skating) survivors. And this is where I personally draw the line and say: I can't support someone like that! But everyone has different personal values and principles and that's okay... And in addition to that it's just really bad for the sport that we probably won't ever see THE pair team of the last olympics skate together again. I have hoped that if she really chose to continue, Bruno and her would still be friendly with each other and skate shows together... But now it seems that's not happening. So this whole situation is just HORRIBLE for figure skating imo.

I don't know, I believe a Great sportsman should leave on a high note. For Aliona that was 2018. I respect her decision but I don't see this new partnership giving her the end result she might be going for. Yes, everybody loves a comeback but for me personally not this one.

I just don't get the fascination with TJ. Why would Aliona, at 37 years of age, chose a 21 year-old (who has never been on the podium at a single senior event...or even come close for that matter) who has bounced from partner to partner, and expect immediate results?? Just from that perspective alone, it makes no sense to me.

In a totally fair world, I’m not even sure Morgan Hurd would’ve been invited to Nationals. She’s competing some of the lowest difficulty routines in the field with poor execution. It’s not even safe for someone to be competing at such a high level so shortly after multiple surgeries. Tbh the writing was on the wall regarding Morgan’s Olympic chances when she failed to make the 2019 team. I understand that everyone wants a shot at Olympic glory, but at this point she’s just comprising her health with little benefit and is simultaneously jeopardizing her chances at being an NCAA recruit because she’s likely to get injured again by training at the elite level.

Apologies if I'm missing something here (discussions are hard to follow for the out-of-the-loop casual fan). From what little I knew, I always thought of Aljona as a "one-track-mind" athlete. My stereotype of hers is she lives for competing. No coaching, no administrating the sport, no organizing events, no performing shows, no judging, no competing in other realms will do. In this way, she is unlike Elvis Stojko or Megan Duhamel who continue to push themselves through multiple interests... Her professional carreer is "one-dimensional"... Thoughts, welcome.

So much going on! Didn’t think it was possible for Vanessa and Eric to be the second most controversial pair this upcoming season, but it has now happened. I don’t think this was a smart move by Aliona, but we shall see what happens. I thought from the beginning Tom Forster was a bad choice for the job as none of his athletes ever made it all the way to the top, which suggests he doesn’t know how to strategize to get there. And he’s done nothing to convince me otherwise since. And the way he handled this Morgan situation was just more evidence of that. Once Simone retires, his inadequacy will really start to shine. There has to be a happy medium between the harsh environment Marta created and this sh*t show that will still yield long term success. And so happy for Jason!!!! I hope it only continues to make him an even better skater and to be more free to live his life as he chooses.

My guess at the reason for the Jade Carey spot situation: I think the FIG only wanted each person to be able to earn one Olympic quota spot. So if you were part of a team that qualified a spot to the Olys (top 3 teams in 2018, the 9 highest placing teams in 2019 that had not already qualified) you couldn't participate in the world cups to qualify individual spots. And those are individual spots, not available to your national fed to substitute in someone else. So the US can't send Simone to everything to get the US maximum number of spots. (and another aim to the whole thing is to get more athletes from "lesser" federations.)

Oh, the gymnastics thoughts ... Along with what you said on the show, some of us who have been around long enough dislike Tom because we remember him from 1995-1996, when he tried to act like the "nice" coach who was going to revolutionize gymnastics, only to act like a petulant child when his gymnasts made mistakes at Olympic Trials and made that comment about Kerri Strug - about knowing when she came she was capable of leaving again. His behavior as team coordinator is nothing new. He's a little Karolyi-like in that his words and actions haven't matched for (literally) decades, but USAG doesn't care and promoted him anyway. As for Jade Carey, I think it's worth pointing out that this controversy might not even exist without the pandemic. If everything had gone as planned, she would have been forced to make a decision on whether to go for the team or accept the individual spot before Trials, and her track record suggests finishing in the top-four at Trials would be difficult for her. With the final World Cup (individual qualifying) event being rescheduled and not cancelled, though, she can compete at Trials and see what happens. Personally, I don't blame her for still trying for the team - if I could be practically-guaranteed a gold medal, I'd go for it, too. Exactly!! the idea of having limited spots for the olympics is to let other countries that do not have the same opportunities to have a spot, but it makes no sense and it is of no help to the countries if like dave said a rich girl change her nationality just to have a spot because she was not able to qualify in her own country. It totally defeats the purpose, because the athletes that are really coming from those countries still won't get the chance.

Even thought the announcers who noticed the judges watched Suni’s feet and they did hit the floor during her bar routine with many other noticeable deductions, she got less than 2 points in deductions on execution which is absolutely outrageous so you are correct about Jade. They will make sure at any cost that she won’t make top two even though she really is possibly the 2nd best gymnast in the world. She was trying to cast a large net to be able to go to the Olympics. Personally I’d want her on my team but that’s not how USAG operates. The announcers really swooned to make sure there’d be no doubt when their chosen girls made the team. After four decades of watching their shenanigans I put nothing past them. They are money hungry back stabbing a-holes.

Sorely disappointed that my initial thoughts have been proven true. I know people were upset about the treatment of Meghan, but I am only referring to the sexual assault component.

Really??I only read negative comments here and in twitter. Which is it fair because this pairing is even worst.

TJ gives me such bad/creepy vibes… I would not ever want to be in a rink with him let alone potentially be his pair partner 🥴🥴

So what's the deal with TJ? Does he have friends in high places? Does he have a sugar mommy? honestly they protect him and try too hard to boost his career like he's something special???? I find him painfully average and not that cute, he looks like every other boy on tik tok I JUST DON'T GET IT.

They’re not getting married-who cares about the age difference. I’m kind of intrigued by the whole thing. I don’t know who this TJ is but Aljona could bring some needed excitement to US pairs. She could also help them gain more spots at Worlds which would give more opportunities going forward.
