This and That: 2024 Russian Figure Skating Championships (Kamila Valieva, Adeliia Petrosian)

Спорт

This week, the top skaters in Russia headed to Chelyabinsk for the 2024 Russian Figure Skating Championships. Adeliia Petrosian won gold at Russian Nationals ahead of Sofia Muravieva and Kamila Valieva. Stepanova and Bukin had a golden comeback in dance, Mishina and Galliamov defeated Boikova and Kovlovskii, Alena Kostornaia made her Nationals' debut in pairs, Evgeni Semenenko continued his consistency, and Elizaveta Osokina and Petr Gumennik were also standouts. Maya Bagriantseva joins me to break down all the action from 2024 Russian Nationals on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

I loved Kostornaia as a singles skater and I think she has real potential as a pairs skater. Her husband has improved too. I hope she remains motivated to compete. To be honest Kostornaia was the only reason I watched any of Russian nationals. Another great show thank you. I enjoy Maya's insight. And I agree Liza would be the smart choice to send to international competitions if she can maintain her triple axel. Liza and Kosto would have stood a decent chance of a medal in this field of ladies.

I'm glad Maya has mentioned Ksenia Sinitsyna as one of the highlights of the Championship. But I wish both she and David dedicated a bit more time to this brilliant skater. She feels music as no one else does among Russian female skaters, her body movements and her freedom in how she moves are estonishing. I noticed this year she has this fire to put her best out there and appetite to compete, and I am eager to see this talented skater among top-3 in Russia.

Agree, Sinitsina is out of this world in terms of musicality not only anong Russian but in the world in general. Perhaps, the reason she wasn’t given enough spotlight is that they don’t expect her competing internationally with Russia’s one quota.

I always thought Medvedeva would make a phenomenal skating commentator and coach! She’s an old soul, she was so mature as a child, to the point where she understood the reasons why the coaches demanded so much of her. During her training, I think she absorbed so much that she could easily train upcoming generations of figure skaters. Not every successful skater can go on to be a great coach, but she would be excellent at it. Moreover, she would be a great skating commentator. She has the voice for it, as well as the knowledge to become one of the best.

Fro really feels the music and she's so consistent, and I loooove Sinitsyna, there's such a lovely, delicate quality to her skating. She's getting older though, she'll be 20 next season, not sure how much longer she'll want to stick around skating knowing she'll always be competing against overscored Eteri skaters and losing to their sub-par skating skills. 💀

Sinitsina is losing to Eteri skaters because unlike them she doesn’t have ultra-Cs. She’s lost to Muravieva (who is team Pluschenko btw) with triple axels. Sinitsina is an amazing skater whose talent is widely recognized by experts and commentators like Tarasova, and there really is no need to victimize her and blame Eteri. Sinitsina is not yet equipped to beat Valieva and Petrosyan.

Apparently there was a survey of the most popular and influential athletes within Russia 2023 and Trusova was second overall after a famous tennis player. She was first amongst all skaters and I think Scherbakova was 8th or something. The survey relied on social media interactions, adverts income press etc. The unfortunate thing is success like that will definitely stoke her haters. For good or ill people just cannot take their eyes off Trusova. She is a real unique character in sport. I wish her and all the Russian team the very best health and luck in love and sport in 2024 🎉🎉🎉

@@sirena3470 I guess there are a few different surveys made at different times. Valieva was busy with competitions maybe not so much in PR and social media and adverts as Sasha was. I think Tarasova has been critical of Sashas 'commercialism' but why bother with competitions when the scores are so biased? Valieva was favoured last season but it seems to be turning around now. Sasha and Anna also had bias in their favour at various times though it never seems to last.

With regards to pairs - I would add more on the potential couples like Slusarenko's teams. Especially the couples, which Artemieva and Brukhanov. Their LP was the best among all other pairs, including the top two. It was not 100% perfect technically but overall it is very well composed and their performance was very good. Also I would expect Khabibulina and Knyazhuk to become stronger as their are already being noticed by judges, and if they hadn't made mistakes, they would have bronze. I love their short program with the tango, it is absolute pleasure! Russian ice dance or rather Santa Barbara on ice is heartbreaking because ever since potential pairs were sacrificed so that Eteri's daughter could go to the Olympics, there has been utter chaos. Out of all couples on the ice today my main interest lies with yesterday's juniors - Leontieva and Gorelkin. They obviously have a long road ahead but I really do see potential at least because after watching 4 incredibly dull Zhulin pairs, it was so refreshing to see someone who actually wanted to ice dance). Unfortunately they are from Zhuk and Svinin and since the federation does not value them, it will be taught for them but hopefully they can make it to the top 5 at least. I also see that a lot of people and surprisingly the judges have faith in the new Havronina and Nerizhny couple. While I love Irina as a skater but hate her for betraying Dario, I do believe this pair has a quick expiration date as soon as David is not interested in her romantically. So unless somehow Valéry and Vasilisa can reunite, I do not see anyone being even potentially able to have a good result internationally when Russians can compete again. My happiness came finally true when Anya Frolova and Ksusha Sinitsina were finally scored seemingly high. I love Frolova's Georgian tango program, it brings me to tears. Ksusha's samba program is a joy and stands out so much from all the other Roxannes. Hopefully, justice prevails and Frolova and Sinktsina can skate internationally and these are the ladies which can proudly represent Russian school of figure skating. For years now I have been looking forward to watching the men's event. Because I an always intrigued, I love that everyone is so different with different and actually interesting programs which fits their personalities. Yes, Aliev is Russian soul on ice, Samarin is a tin man but with the best ice dance 80s theme program, Semenenko is not just another boy from Mishin camp, Dikidhzhi has great flexibility and lightness to his jumps but needs to add emotion to presentation. Petya is clearly a genius and both programa show that. It is a pure joy to watch men today). P. S. Tarasova was great, she gave it to everyone who deserves the critics. I wanted to applaud every single comment on ice dance, especially on Shanaeva who acts like she is top 1,when she skates much worse than a year ago... She skates like me, a person who has a lot of charisma but is terrified of ice and thus has wooden legs. Or as Dave would say a villager on ice who is coming to the city.

She openly speaks about a lot of issues in it. And that girl deserves that Olympic spot, that medal. So we will again have a fully fledged adult woman skater medaling. And Kostornaya, I sincerely want her to win Russian Pair nationals in 2-3 yrs, or another countries, do not care. I want her at the Olympics being shady on Eteri. Sincerely, she deserves. Thank you Maya for your perspective! I really appreciate how you draw things back to the actual skating (Alissa too when she's on). So much lately there has been too much talk of drama and personalities and other random stuff that has nothing to do with skating. Have found this on TSL live too, so I'm super grateful to Maya and Alissa and some of the other guests for steering the conversation a bit. Dave I really appreciate all you do, but some of these tangents are just exhausting, and I feel like I'm hearing the same stories over and over again (ice baths, vaganova, Barbara Streisand etc - like they're interesting for a quick minute, but I feel like I'm hearing about them over and over for weeks, and often there's little mention of the actual skating from that week). Anyway, Merry Christmas everyone, hope you have a lovely holiday season!

Maya does not really have a sense of humor, and she is all business, and sometimes a little antagonistic. I don't think Dave goes on "tangents", and they are far from exhausting. ❤❤❤ love russian nationals. Curious if they give Valieva a 2-year ban if it will be retroactive from the date of the Olympics so therefore she can continue competing going forward, but that any medals she had in the interim will taken. So sad, that girl is beyond talented but she is struggling with her weight and her height, she definitely needs to cut a little weight, not emaciated, but just some so that she can move more freely on the ice. She looks labored in her movements right now but they still look so beautiful even if it's more difficult for her with the extra height and weight. I still say it I've never seen a skater like her that looks like a prima ballerina, rhythmic gymnast, and modern dancer in one. She is no doubt extremely gifted with bodily movements and has incredible control of her core, extensions, body lines. Stunning girl

I really appreciate Mayas perspective! She seems very fair and knowledgeable in her opinions and helps us see the Russians as acutal human athletes, not just puppets in drama. I like yours ans Jonathan's show Dave, but honestly, you could learn from Maya to focus more on actual scating and appreciation of the sport instead of too much drama and speculation. I myself am East European and sometimes feel your very American way of viewing the world lacks some balance and your stereotypes of Russians and - sorry - sometimes misogyny (you judge the young young girls character way more harshly than the men) gets in the way of enjoying skating. I hope you can see that as feedback, as I really appreciate you covering the sport I love and enjoy your guys podcast. I just think you could improve!

I am American but just hearing her say so many people didn't even believe he should cover Russian skating I get so mad that I had to wait and come back to it because I am so sick of the anti-Russian hate and how it's so accepted in America and most cannot even answer basic questions on the conflict over there. It's so hypocritical from a country supplying bombs to multiple countries (and so much more) I could really go into the how and the who that did everything behind the scenes since 2014 that led to this but no one cares about facts they just want to hate Russians. The ISU never should have done this and they showed that they aren't an "international" agency at all because if they were, they would be having to ban at least a few more countries. They will likely delete my comment or block me for saying this much. Cannot lay out the facts for the reasons I find this anti-Russian stance so hypocritical. I am glad they covered it, and I think she does a great job, but honestly, I would rather just watch her. I am super supportive of Russian figure skating and anymore I don't trust these so-called international agencies like the ISU or WADA because they aren't non-biased or objective. I don't trust that they are not used for political purposes. It's amazing the trust people have in them. Anyway, I haven't watched this podcast in forever for many reasons but she is great and for that I am glad to see her.

@KS-lp3ui that may be true. However, Russia is banned because of the war and not for doping. For the ISU to ban Russia over Ukraine shows, they aren't really an international agency, but one that makes political decisions that make no sense. How can you ban Russia when it was Ukraine that broke the 2 peace agreements since the 2014 coup? ISU has some explaining to do on how the US isn't banned or Ukraine. When the ISU bans for doping then a conversation can be had but that isn't why Russia is banned.

I think, that the reason Eteri is taking a step back (if you want to call it this way), is because it is “back to drawing board” for her. I will explain: her whole technique so far was based on the almost assembly line of girls, peaking at 15-16 years old and holding on top for 1-2 seasons. More over, they had similar body types, because the technique was designed to accommodate particular figure. Except Trusova, who is muscular and reminiscent of Lisa T. But now the age limitation was lifted, and the girls will only be allowed to compete in adults starting at 17. That means, that her whole technique now only works for junior world, and who cares about it? Therefore, they really have to go to squire one and re-work everything. Don’t you think? Adult female bodies cannot do 4 quads, even one 3A took Lisa years yo return after she grew! I really think that’s the reason Eteri is less active, not loss of interest. And if you noticed, her focus already shifted. I know you do not appreciate Valieva, but she is now within the “two years of change”, and when (and if) she exits that time, with her talent she might once again succeed. Because she, just like Trusova, was built differently. But unlike Trusova she is also incredibly artistic and expressive…

  • @EvaMasters-oo2bu

    @EvaMasters-oo2bu

Eteri is less active because there are no international competitions and skaters and coaches are less motivated. The top government sponsored jobs and top publicity, money front shows, etc. for retired skaters go to Olympic champions, which currently is off the table. In general, putin has a policy to award international medals, especially Olympic, it is part of his narrative on Greater Slavic world vs the Anglo-Saxons (this is what he divides the white race into, claiming that ruzzia should have dominion over, as it did during the Soviet era.) You can be sure that the moment international competitions become open for russian skaters, Eteri will be back with the same single-minded greed for medals.

Skating in the US is expensive and now there are so few shows or post-amateur opportunities, so hard to get families to invest. Russian pairs have so much speed and balletic qualities that require intense training from a young age. China copied the system and it worked but the US doesnt put enough money into the sport and hard to justify in it's current state. It's a pity because the ISU needs US criticism to keep the European bloc from systemic collusion.

Kamila is not the greatest female skater of all time. There are a long list of ladies who were better than her who had beautiful programs, clean jumps, artistic expression and spins and they did it without grandpa's drugs. Think Michelle, Sasha, Mao, Yuna, sea of American women from the latter half of the last century and a sea of Japanese champions who have beautiful knees and clean edges.Kamila, whether forced to take the drugs or not is not innocent. This is not a question of her character as a 15 year old. The fact is and was that she was competing as a cheater. The drugs were in her system. Aside from her flexibility, which wasn't always used well or controlled is not the only thing that makes a great skater. Sasha Cohen had perfect extension and it was used beautifully and she created signature moves. She was a real.ballerina on ice. Michelle Kwan is one of the greatest artists to be on ice with pure edges and jumps. Kim Yuna, Midori Ito and a sea of Japanese women have been better jumpers and did it while clean and had pure edges going in and out of those jumps. Kamila hurls herself into the air and cannot actually land a combination without adjusting after the first jump and using her arms to stabilize herself. Her skating has never been beautiful. I feel sorry for Kamila that her federation keeps making her lie and arev dragging her case for years and her own country men discuss her weight etc. The Russian federation should be ashamed. But again, Kamila is not the best at anything other than kicking her leg up after jumps and at an awkward side angle, not behind her. Sorry.

I’m super curious to know what Maya thinks happened with Kamila’s doping. She’s obviously a very smart person who is able to take multiple perspectives into account when assessing a situation. So I doubt she accepts the grandpa story, nor the evil Western media conspiracy. Yet she appears to believes that Kamila is a victim. Does she think Eteri is responsible for doping Kamila, perhaps without Kamila’s knowledge? Or the state? Also curious to know what Kamila herself thought back then, and what she thinks now.

Will Tuktamysheva have a triple axel and other jumps in a year to send her to the World or European Championships? that is the question.. The main reason why foreigners want to see Tuktamysheva from our country at the world championships is that she can be defeated, she is not the strongest in the world... this is very beneficial for them)

Foreigners want to see Tuktamysheva because we feel like we know her. She's a "friendly Russian." Liza has earned respect from fans around the world for her staying power, and mature outlooks on life and sport. Wanting to see her back at international competitions has nothing to do with "defeating the lone Russian," as you imply. Besides, who else would you send out there? Petrosian will have to grow soon, one would think, and will have to struggle through that process. Not to mention, those quads aren't clean. Kamila? Not an option, for so many reasons. Muravieva? Seems mentally fragile. Not sure she could stand up to the pressure to go out and secure that second quota. Looking down the line, no one else has an ultra-C to make them stand out in international events. So yeah, that leaves Tuktamysheva. Send us Liza, please.

I know that by the rules, the Russians should only have one entry per discipline when they come back - but are we sure this will absolutely happen? I have a feeling/fear the ISU might just say Eh to the whole thing, forgive and forget the ban and let them go right back to three.
