This and That: 2021 NHK Trophy (Shoma Uno, Kaori Sakamoto, Daria Usacheva, Daisuke Takahashi)

Спорт

This week, the top figure skaters headed to Japan for the 2021 NHK Trophy. After the untimely injury to Daria Usacheva, Russia was left without an entry at the ISU Grand Prix event. Kaori Sakamoto and Mana Kawabe made the most of the opportunity, with Young You winning the bronze and Alysa Liu finishing fourth. In the men's event, Sho. ma Uno won a showdown with Vincent Zhou. Jun Hwan Cha continued his comeback season by winning bronze. In the dance, Sinitsina and Katsalapov defeated Chock and Bates and Fear and Gibson. While in the pairs event, Mishina and Galliamov defeated Tarasova and Morozov. Meanwhile, Wakaba Higuchi added a triple axel to her short program to shake things up at the Cup of Austria. We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

I saw everything live in Japan. What dies not show on TV very well is Kaori`s skating quality. It seems that she needs like only 3 ateps to go across the ice. It is so amazing that i finally understood that Kaori always get high scores without difficult jumps.

Can I just say how happy I was to hear Mark Hanretty commentate on the ISU stream? He's better than Simon Reed "by a country mile." He manages to say positive things about each performance while being critical and technical about the mistakes. I hope he will be on the stream for the rest of the GP. My moment was Shoma winning gold. His Sholero makes Bolero tolerable.

I hope so too but those jumps are so hard on the hips, ask good ol Tara about that.... she had hip surgery in her teens. Unfortunately, I see it getting reinjured. If it's an avulsion fracture (I had one on my ankle), they take awhile to heal and with the bone chipping away with the ligament/muscle, that area will remain a weak one and susceptible to injury. I hope that I am wrong because she seems like a lovely girl but with the depth of talent in Russia, I honestly don't know how she comes back. Best wishes for Daria.

But I don’t know if it’s just the time they’ve put in and their performance quality is better now or something, or if it was Mark fangirling over them in the commentary (which we love 🙌🏻), but I saw it with new eyes this time, even with the fall, and now I LOVE it. U don't have to ''worry'' about those young girls. They have their own parents who take care on them, who follow their training sessions and follow their children to international competitions ( we could see many of them, among the audience. Alina's mom, for instance, at Pyeongchang games, Sasha's , Ann's and Alyona's mothers at GPF, in 2019',...etc. Sasha even took her dog with her). Parents of Eteri's girls are also treated like a members of ''Sambo 70'' club, and consult with coaching team about everything. So, there is no reason to call Eteri ''cruel witch'' who abuses her students, parents of Eteri's students certainly care more ( the most) about their kids than you ''care on them'', while at the same time U call ALL of them ''bad skaters'' or ''skaters with bad technique'', Your ''worry'' 'for those girls sounds hypocritically.

Tarasova/Morozov are just so gorgeous, and I've seen him smile when he's off the ice and it's glorious, so I wonder who told him growing up that pairs boys don't smile? Contrast with Miura/Kihara; he's got a dozen different smiles he uses during their program and it's no wonder we're all wishing them well. And Junhwan Cha's Ina Bauer was perfectly placed and spectacularly executed. So nice to see him skating well again. (And he smiles) Also: How tall is Makar Ignatov? That’s them in the BEST light. I have no problem with Eteri and don’t think she’s the devil or anything like that (in fact I think she has been great overall for skating) but on this subject it’s clear Eteri for several years now lets Daniil and zhelyeznkov run wild basically and say whatever they want. Zhelyeznkov already blamed Daria for her injury here because she was working too hard so I’m not even saying anything that they don’t agree with, they themselves are saying Daria doesn’t know when to stop. But what we disagree on is I think it’s their responsibility to teach her this and they clearly don’t. If Eteri had been firm with Trusova from the start and told her to stop with the 5 quads and focus on clean skate she would have had the senior career everyone expected her to have back when she was in juniors, instead Trusova has no remarkable results to show despite her superior athletic talent

Timestamps in depth perspective: 0:00 Introduction 1:02 Daria’s Injury before SP during the 6-minute warm up. 7:22 Inconsistencies with ISU and their “judging” especially with what are considered “favorites” for events. Like I.e Eteri girls getting points where it’s probably not right. Ladies: 11:40 Eunsoo Lim (better here). I love her so much. I didn’t know her coach was MinJung Kwak??!! I loved her!! She skated to Les Miserables at the 2010 Olympics (a very similar cut to what You Young is doing and got another GP medal here at NHK! Could she qualify with the absence of top Russian skaters for the final? I’m not sure but I do hope so! 13:28 Kaori Sakamoto (great victory for her here! I don’t love either program really). The lutz call is correct for both programs. She needs to do loop in the short since the lutz edge is very dicey for her, and Kaori’s loop is absolutely gorgeous!! Go rewatch The Piano from 2 years ago and you’ll see what I mean. 19:35 Mana Kawabe, rising star in Japan! Should Satoko or whoever else retire this season Japan has a lineup of great skaters! Including Matsuike who didn’t do so well here in the Short especially. 21:30 You Young, loved her here. Just great to see her do better than last year. Just a year ago she did so poorly at NHK. What a redemption for her. I think with the lack of Daria it was really anyones day to win. Obviously Kaori did but Young You had a chance to win here. The technical content in the free should she cleanly do it, is very high. She did so well at Skate America and she is continuing this upward trend. She’s making progress! Hopefully she doesn’t injure herself or implode at Nationals. It’ll be interesting to see who goes for Korea. Do they only have one spot for ladies? Please comment if you know. I can’t remember. 30:11 Wakaba, CS Austrian Cup 58:30 Camden and Tomoki, more of the same for Camden. Really was a rising star a few years ago and now not so much. Not sure what’s happening. I don’t see very many rising mens talents with the exception of Ilia Malinin who won bronze at the CS Austria Cup this week. I think Wakaba is leading there which is amazing for her she is 3 for 3 with the 3A. Can’t deny her a spot Japanese Federation. I want to see Mai and Wakaba at the Olympics. Both programs are worthy of going in my opinion. 59:42 Nam Nguyen. Rough SP. Redemptive free. Not much to say. All the Canadian men are at a equal playing field in my opinion. Wait and see till nationals. 1:00:42 Makar and Alexandr. Both were ok. Makar’s Quad loop looks great! One of very few who are doing it currently. I think it’s the 2nd rarest with the exception of the Axel (which nobody has done cleanly). 1:02:17 Vincent. Rough free many mistakes. Riding the wave from Skate America. Good to see him hopefully make the final. 1:05:08 Shona Uno. Great to see him get 100+ points in the short again. I love the short, free not so much. He won by almost 30 points ahead of Vincent! This was a great victory for Shoma!! 1:07:07 more of the same from Jun Heat Cha. Great skater with great qualities but sometimes inconsistencies plague him. Top contender here as well. Side note, Matteo Rizzo love his programs! Great to see him do well here at NHK!

Matteo did great! I honestly thought that Vincent would win again, but Shoma really did well here. I'm so glad he's going to the GPF. Junhwan did great, too! I hope he goes to the GPF. All the women with 3As here struggled; I feel the same way Jonathan does about You Young. Too inconsistent with 3A, her money-maker. It will be difficult for her to get on the national team if she continues with this. Lim Eunsoo has the best SP and costume, but it's clear she's not making the GPF. Kawabe Mana could be a contender for the Japanese team if she gets consistent with 3A. Even if Alysa doesn't make it on the Grand Prix, she is the strongest American woman, so she's definitely going to the Olympics, and can go on to next season.

@@Essylte I agree. Alysa is our most consistent skater this season. I think maybe Gracie Gold could make the team at this point: stranger things have happened before. Young You needs to get the 3A more consistent. Eunsoo has always had great costuming. Mana wasn’t a surprise here to me, we’ve seen her do amazing before. It was just the fault of a really rough short at Skate Canada that put her so far below, otherwise I think she probably could have made the final maybe.

But this time it is worst, having Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto in ugliest version played on the saw and fiddlestick mixed with irish dance, propably inspired by Riverdance? Pair I'd say comparable. Japan would win on women and that's the only thing that Japan is ahead.

They've discussed it a lot. It's possible. If Nathan is back to his old self and skates clean, the US will have the benefit of scoring higher than Japan in men's singles and ice dance, even if Yuzu skates, but the U.S. doesn't have a pair team or woman who can beat them. I was just playing with the possibilities, but I don't remember the exact rules of the Olympic figure skating team event. There are only five countries who participate in the free skate part of it, but skaters from ten countries are in the short program. This makes a big difference IF those points earned in the short carry over. For instance, France won't make the top five final countries, but obviously we can't score above Papadakis/Cizeron in the short program.

If U.S. go for Alysa and Nathan in the SP, Japan would likely have Kaori and Yuzuru/Shoma. So I think the singles would balance out, based on this I would say Japan are leaning towards bronze because of ice dance. Korea does not have an existing pairs team so might not participate,@@trylogic4084 I believe France does not have a women's or pairs spot and a country needs 3 disciplines to take part.

@@fionan7311 If they qualify for the team event, they get to bring an athlete or team for the team event even if they didn’t qualify in the individual event. They can only skate in the team event. But you are right that France did not qualify. The ten teams are CAN, CHN, CZE, GEO, GER, ITA, JPN, ROC, UKR and USA.

@@fionan7311 I agree with everything you said, but while Nathan will likely be first in both SP and FS (if he's back to his old unbeatable self), any woman the US sends will rank 3rd, because I consider the Japanese girls second only to Russia. The US might take the silver, but it's going to be really close. When I calculated my guesses, I ended with the US only three points ahead of Japan. That's with me ranking Canada's Gilles/Poirier ahead of the US. If Nathan screws up in the SP, Yuzu or Shoma or Yuma will probably get that point, and then we'll only be ahead of Japan by 1 point. I think it's going to be a nail biter.

Dave mentioned a codpiece? I'm all for bringing them back, but I couldn't recall seeing one on anybody...probably distracted by Nicki's shirt (yes, I think there was a small gold chain at collarbone level). So I went back to rewatch the pairs on codpiece alert. I think you're talking about Alexandr Galliamov, right? I think he's wearing a dance belt, so his butt is perfectly smooth. The seam in the front is kind of oddly done though, not particularly flatterring. Nicki's blouse in the Free Dance was great! It had so much movement of its own that he looked like he was much faster than usual.

The other is that ISU need to change how they reword PCS with fantastic skating. The other is that ISU need to focus on take off. The other is I fell so sorry for. But she doesn’t put it in the programs. She would be the only US lady to be doing rippon jumps and make a statement for herself. But to see her not do rippons, when she can do them is just upsetting because she has soo much talent and just doesn’t do it in competition. But anyway hope she comes back hard at nationals!!!

Regarding Viki and Nick's Free Dance. The dance is beautiful. The one who scolds the perfomance does not understand anything about Russia and Russians. Dance is a flight over Russia, circling over its expanses. The color of the costumes is the silver of ice and the blue of the waters of Russian rivers and lakes. Those who scold, probably, would like to see in the performance of Vicky and Nick secondary attempts at lozongroup-style. It's great that Zhulin and the guys managed to avoid the temptation to go this way. The execution will only improve, and it will, for sure. The score for the performance will increase. And the components are already high, i.e. the judges already see the dance as potentially champion, they see what rival fans turn a blind eye to. It's funny to read all these comments about underpants instead of discussing the dance itself. It turns out that in addition to the style of underpants, these commentators do not see anything or do not understand anything, or, on the contrary, they saw-realized the potential-were afraid-began to hate? Good luck to everyone, health, the arena will judge everyone.
