This and That: 2021 Internationaux de France & 2021 Warsaw Cup (Team Tutberidze News & Pyramid)

This week, the top skaters in the world traveled to the 2021 Internationaux de France & 2021 Warsaw Cup. It was dramatic, competitive and very exciting. Viewers are left debating the real order of Anna Shcherbakova, Alena Kostornaia and Wakaba Higuchi after their performances in France. Did Mariah Bell do enough to make the Olympics? Could Gracie Gold surprise at U.S. Nationals? Did Maya Khromykh help or hurt her chances in Warsaw? Why is Alysa Liu in Colorado? How did Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin suddenly become the second ranked dance team in Russia by only competing at one ISU Grand Prix event? Are Tarasova and Morozov the Olympic favorites? How do Yuma Kagiyama and Jason Brown fit into the Olympic picture? What do we make of the free dance of Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron? What does the injury and fall by Chelsea Liu and Danny O'Shea mean for their competitive futures? Should Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier switch free skates? Are Vanessa James and Eric Radford the favorites to win Canadian Nationals? We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

Watching it on the way back from Grenoble!💙 For me the highlights were: -Alena stealing the night in the ladies event in the short and getting a standing ovation from the crowd. Also Eteri bringing the emotional support dog for Alena. -Wakaba’s beautiful choreo. Watching Danny G’s bs after that was unbearable. -Aliev, the tortured genius. His skating is absolutely mesmerising. If only we could fix him somehow. I wondered what if they gave Nuriev to him instead of Kolyada… But saying that he has good programs of his own this year. I’m going to light all my candles for him. -Deniss Vasilievs exhibition skate. WOW. It’s even more powerful live. When someone actually has choreo in their exhibition! - On a less positive note: I really wanted to see Jason’s programs live, but unfortunately it didn’t have the impact I was expecting. I don’t know if that’s maybe what Dave said about the repetition or the quad is killing the rest of the program, but I somehow expected more.

We all are grateful for you shining a light on this crap! Skating should thank you 🙏 and have you commentate with Johnny and Tara! Also, a bit of a random comment: I like Anna S, and I think she's a beautiful performer, and she's definitely a fierce competitor. But this weekend it occured to me that I don't remember watching her skate to anything that wasn't classic+angsty style. We talk so much about range when discussing some other competitors, and other girls in that rink skated to more cheerful music. I noticed bc to me it starts to feel like it's her personality, the angst and pain.

LOVED THE SPARKLES AND THIS EPISODE🤩✨ I don’t think Kostornaia likes Dani G very much and who can blame her after all the shade he’s been throwing her way in the recent interviews. I think Aliona only really respects Eteri and if we are to believe the rumours this is reciprocated. Whilst Eteri would never let her personal feelings drive any sort of favouritism, it is still noticeable that despite everything that happened, she still has warm feelings towards Aliona (fixing her mask, hugging her in the kiss&cry despite her not landing any triple axels in the event). Maybe it’s one of those cases where you love your rebellious and troublesome child more than your compliant ones haha 😂 Regarding dropping her from the team, I don’t think this will happen even if she doesn’t perform on an A level. We have to remember that she is currently the ONLY adult skater in the entire camp. Olympic solo may be a bit of a stretch for her at this stage, but if Eteri can get her in decent enough shape to medal at say Europeans, Worlds or even participate with a solid performance on the Olympics Team Event, she can maaaaybe change the ‘child factory’ perception that still follows her around. Side note: Eteri needs to sort out the Dani G blabbering to the media situation. Two weeks ago he was whining about ‘lazy’ Aliona (to the point where even Khrustalny fans asked him to leave her alone) and a few days later, ‘non-lazy’ Daria and Sasha get injured. Not a good look for the camp, not a good look….

This is Jason's best showing on the GP this quad (medalling at both events) and yet we're still talking about the fact that Ilia Malinin may make the Olympics instead of him. Come on! Jason's score at IDF actually beat Vincent's from NHK so he's not even a million miles from him. It's very clear both Jason and his team know where he needs to be and are working on him peaking at the right time (Nats/Olympics) rather than at the GP season. Remember his 19/20 season - he had a pretty bad GP season and yet peaked at Nats and 4CC and was looking remarkably on track to be in peak condition at Worlds before it was cancelled. Jason has been very clear he wants to make that Olympic team for himself and that's what his goal is. The fact that Jason can medal twice on the GP circuit with a questionable quad attempt and popped jumps shows that the judges are willing to go with him. Why the heck would you risk that (and the potential viral moments he could bring to the sport and USFS) for a junior man who is virtually untested at the senior level and performed poorly at his own senior assignment, not even making Worlds minimums. Unless Jason absolutely bombs Nats, he's going to Beijing.

So many reasons why Team Tutberidze would want to push Anna as their #1. She’s been there the longest, so she validated their technique and their ability to say they don’t poach girls with strong skating skills learned from other schools. Second, she’s over the expiration date, so she proves that Eteri’s girls can win past the age of 15. Lastly, she has a diligent, non-confrontational personality, so they’ll be able to tell younger students, “see look what happens when you’re a good girl.”

I think they are ok but not the number 2 in Russia lol. Who knew lol 1:48 Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin (CS WARSAW CUP) 199.9 and 81 for the RD. They were close to 200 points. 2:23 Anna Shcherbakova and Kamila Valieva. Favorites presumably for the GPF. I think Kamila is at Rostelecom cup right? Please comment if I’m wrong and she’s already done two grand prixes. That fall on the attempted quad looked scary. Good for her for continuing as best as she did. She pulled a Mao Asada alla 2008 Worlds. 3:26 Pairs (Morozov and Tarasova) great here at Warsaw cup 4:07 Sofia Akatieva, rising junior star from Team Tutberidze 6:14 Alexandra Sasha Trusova. Probably won’t make the final. I hope she gets healed in time for nationals. Could she afford skipping it like Medvedeva?? She has really powerful jumps. Her programs this season are actually amazing! Love the music concepts!!! 6:43 Alena Kostornaia and Maia Khromykh. Alena was silver at IDF and Maia won the Warsaw cup this week too! Good for her actually. She is building a name for herself and you know what I’m buying it and I’m loving it. A year ago I would have counted her out but she’s proving all the haters that the Cup final wasn’t a fluke. She CAN do it. As Eteri has said before. 11:28 Daria Usacheva. I feel so bad for her. 12:44 Kostornaia again. She did well here especially in the short program. I’m loving it more and more! It’s a great vehicle for her I think. She just needs to build more confidence and to land that 3A. 15:56 More on Daria, injury. 17:46 ARMENIA REFERENCE. Thanks Dave! Putting my native country on the map. I’m Armenian but born in the US. 20:15 Back to Kostornaia again. 20:53 Wakaba Higuchi, she was unable to land the 3A in the short but did it in the long. She won bronze here and I really love her skating so much. 22:30 Gabby Izzy replacing Bradie Tennell at Golden Spin of Zagreb. The injury must be more serious then I thought it was. I hope she recovers in time for nationals. Last season she had an amazing free program I called it one of the best of all time actually that and Nureyev. 24:00 More Wakaba Higuchi. Great outing for her here. I hope this helps her chances of making the Olympic team. I don’t know the extent of Roma’s injury but we haven’t seen her since WTT in April. 24:25 Mao Mihara 29:19 more Wakaba Anna and Kostornaia 30:00 Even more Kostornaia. 31:21 Mariah Bell. Really disappointed me, in 2019 she won the bronze here. The programs are MUCH better than Cranberry. Those were TWO BIG MISSES there. Back to Hallelujah. I watched her free from the alternate angle as I was unable to watch any disciplines this time. She looked very slow and sluggish and no triple triple in the free and downgraded the one I believe in the short. Hopefully she does well at Nationals. It would be iconic AGAIN if she repeats the same MAGIC at nationals like in 2019. 40:29 More Anna 47:24 Starr Andrews and her withdrawal from GP France. Pairs 48:39 Danny O’Shea scary accident! 51:56 US pairs and our situation. 53:58 Alexa and Brandon (3rd). 57:11 James/Radford (4th at GP France). 59:24 Morozov and Tarasova. Great to see them Skate clean!! 1:01:00 Ice Dance 1:03:00 Papadakis and Cizeron (GP France). I really love the Free Dance a lot. I know a lot of people don’t love it or find it boring or lacking in some way. However, I love the music and a musician who is trained classically and got a degree in performance as well (2021). I find the music of Faurè to be extremely picturesque and I can imagine things in the music. Lots of colours as well. The Elegie is one of my favorites including Pavane and Sicilienne as well. I find the music to have such a deep meaning and I really love it so much. If this doesn’t win the Olympics I quit watching. 1:05:40 Russian and French Rivalries. 1:06:58 Piper and Paul. I love their costumes! 1:07:45 Diana Davis (CS WARSAW) Mens: 1:11:09 Jason Brown (Bronze medal). I think he should not jeopardize his position by attempting quads it’s distracting from the lines he creates in the free. I love both programs actually. The Sinnerman is spicy and I love it and it creates a Character! With the Schindlers list I feel something and that’s what the piece is about something reflective and sad. 1:13:23 US (will be interesting at Nationals). 1:17:42 Keegan Messing. Great performances here in Grenoble. I think even better than Skate Canada. I think he is the most consistent of the Canadian mens and the most likely to get the first of two spots for the Olympics. 1:17:48 Yuma Kagiyama 1:19:37 Shun Sato 1:20:42 Russian Men 1:21:05 Moment of the week. Mine has to be Wakaba winning bronze at GP France and Kurakova beating Khromykh in the free at CS Warsaw. Oops I forgot to add Kostornaia’s SP at GP France and Kseniia’s as well! 1:21:39 End of the Video! Gracie Gold did great at the 2022 Us championships series she scored 67.49 points and also landed a 3Lz+3T They did mention this in the video I cannot remember the time though sorry. I thought they didn’t but when I rewatched the second time I did hear them talk about Gracie. I think if she can lay it down at nationals maybe she could make the podium idk. I really hope you're right about Aliona dave. It's bit of a stretch to me and it's really sad bc her combo's still seem huge and exciting (and def clean, unfortunately Anna's combos are visibly deteriorating). I would love to have Aliona at the Olympics for her insane charisma and personality. After this weekend I hope the biggest takeaway to Team Tut is how beloved Aliona is to her fans. She got insane support this weekend and she didn't even do a triple axel

Fun episode. I'm amused by your thought that Ilia could be sent instead over Jason Brown when Jason has been doing fine, while inexperienced Ilia was 13th after the SP at whatever random Poland or Austria comp he was at. With Nationals no longer the sole determinant for selections, I don't see how that can happen. I'm also amused by this narrative that Cain/LeDuc had this super GP season when they are double digit points behind Knierim/Frazier''s total score for the GP Final qualification tie break. They did well placement-wise but have had some struggles here and there throughout the season. You could have commented how well K/F came back after his fall here to medal, but at least Jonathan acknowledged they deserved silver, and most of the judges felt that way too. The didn't get any favors at this event but still did a great job.

Tatiana Tarasova’s comment on Jonathan’s reaction: “When people say something like that, they should add “in my opinion”. Others may have a different one. No need to criticise Gleizenkhauz’s work. Do his words surprise me? I got used to such words over the years. But I would like to ask this “journalist”: who does a good choreo? Out of the ones that are currently out there.”

The fact that Eteri has so much power, that she can extend her influence all the way to ice dance and get her daughter to shamelessly rise from mediocre to olympic medal contender in less than a handful of competitions, pretty much explains everything that happened this weekend and every competition to come. Wakaba was probably the most heartbreaking this weekend, for me. I will watch Beijing because I still have so many faves, but after Beijing? Eteri will finally decide she will whip lazy men into shape and it will be the end of the sport. Outside Russia, anyway. Do I sound gloomy? It's probably because I am.

@@SilenceHurtsMore I agree with the goal! But I don't think Russian boys are more overscored at the moment than Daniel Grassl or other quad jumpers. If anything, it's USFSA dominating the overscoring in Men's. Nathan is an excellent jumper but not the top skater and performer, and he gets top GOE and PCS. Vincent is really mind boggling that he gets all those scores and no technical penalties. But anyway, judging today *in general* favours big jumpers by awarding them GOE and PCS they haven't earned, big jumpers from all countries benefit and quickly rise if they're consistent jumpers. But I think the real overscoring will happen when someone like Eteri decides she wants to win in the Men's discipline as well. Then it will be like Anna and Alena with falls winning by a vast margin against a Wakaba with a 3A and a clean skate. My opinion.

I wish Yuma had Shoma’s performance quality because the rest of his skating is like Shoma’s with better technique and even more speed. I don’t think he’ll ever be a natural performer on the level of Takahashi or Lambiel because he seems naturally reserved and somewhat shy, but I definitely think he has the potential to be an engaging performer. I agree with you about his short program, but I disagree with you about his free skate. I think it’s very Olympic and organically builds to a rousing finish, unlike Nathan’s Mozart free, which comes across as disjointed with a slapped on high energy ending.

One of the reasons the japanese federation is very harsh on wakaba seems to be because she "cost" them the three spots for the 2018 olympics, due to doing badly during 2017 worlds. I don't agree with that assessment, but I do think it makes them scared to send her to big competitions unless they are 100% sure she can deliver

They never liked her long before that, in juniors. She was only 16 and Satoko pulled out with injury, not Wakaba's fault . They didn't back her in the Olympic year when she was the best Japanese all season. She just isnt their vision of a Japanese skater. They liked Marin, Satoko and now Kaori over her, even though she is more talented than all of them. Knowing your own fed does not support you makes performing much harder, you have to go outside your comfort zone.
