A mid-engined Corvette has been many years in the making - roughly 60 or so. It was the dream of Zora Arkus-Duntov, the "Father of the Corvette," and he pushed it relentlessly for decades, only to be shot down every time it seemed close. He retired in 1975, but the Corvette team at Chevrolet kept the dream alive, finally culminating in the C8.
There were a fair number of concept and development cars made over the years that tested the mid-engined layout, some more successful and attractive than others, but all of them failing to get built. Making this eighth generation Corvette in a mid-engine layout was arguably something Chevrolet needed to do to keep Corvettes relevant, cutting edge, and forward thinking. I applaud them for it, and can very much say the car they made was worth the wait, especially in terms of value for money. In that parameter, this car is in a class all by itself.

I'm wondering if you've recognized that parallel between your criticisms of newer cars? When everything is antiseptically perfect, some, if not all, of the soul is lost. The beauty of this car is that it can actually on dry conditions, put the power to the ground without 4 wheel drive, the 0-60 time is astonishing as is power to weight ratio, a far greater achievment than any hellcats that can't handle curves and will spin tires before achieving any kind of grip... Not practical but for the price, it can't be beat!

Ever since I was like 10 I wanted the Vette to be mid-engined , And now that it's finally here, I honestly don't quite know how I feel about it. It's a great car that can finally run with the likes of Ferrari & Lamborghini but for me personally...something is still missing. It's no C8 but I have a slightly modified '87 Fiero GT (no v8 yet) that actually has a soul & character & I have more fun in that car than you would ever think was possible. I know alot of people hate them but most Fiero Owners will tell you they are one of the best, most fun & most overlooked cars ever built by GM. It does not deserve the reputation haters have given it because of a couple little engine fires in 1984 only models most of which were the fault of their owner's for not reading the owners manual to learn about operating a mid-engined car & not properly maintaining the engine.

I think it's cool that they used an "old school" pushrod engine, kept the horsepower claim under 500 & still managed a decent zero to sixty time. Many of these cars with 600-900 HP still don't have any faster acceleration times. The wall of buttons between the seats is lame and I absolutely detest touch screens, but that engine sounds great! I think I would opt for the Coupe so I could have the transparent cover. Stinger missiles for the aircraft and Mac-10 for the birds;)

Hey Bill, I believe we are the same age so I can relate to being SHOCKED at how fast cars have become. When I was growing up the best the Americans could come up with was the later years of the C4 ZR1 which put out 405 HP and 0-60 in like 4.4 seconds and that was considered blistering quick back then. Now? You can walk into your local Ford dealer and buy for under 40k a Mustang GT that with the 10 speed auto will do 0-60 in 4 seconds flat. IN A MUSTANG! I recall the first car I ever drove and owned which was a 4 second car which was the C5 Z06. That was just BONKERS fast for me so I can't even imagine it would be like to own and drive a C8 Corvette which I have seen KZreadrs get 0-60 in 2.7 seconds. CRAZY! It is hard to believe and sad that all this explosion in innovation with gasoline cars is going to be replaced with what you called a toaster on wheels the electric car. What a shame.

These have yet to grow on me style wise even though they are becoming fairly common on LA roads. I appreciate the engineering/performance to price ratio that GM has been able to achieve with this. I agree that at the base $60K price, there really is nothing on the market that can compete with this performance wise. Saying that, I wouldn't buy one myself mainly cause I still can't get over the exterior styling or some of those cabin choices also mentioned by Bill but it is the biggest performance car bargain if you can put those other things aside.

I have always loved the Corvette line-up but I have to be honest, this is not a Corvette I would care to own, it does not even resemble the Corvette in my opinion, but then again all the new model cars resemble something from outer space, that just looks like a bunch of crazy angles of too much carbon fiber ( which I do not care for) and plastic. @@matrox $59,995 to be exact, but this is a convertible with performance exhaust, so you're right, probably closer to $70K. A 3LT with mag shocks and a few options easily approaches $90K.

I would rather have the targa top instead of the convertible, but that being said this is the only car built in the last probably 25-30 years that I actually want. I haven't really liked any cars since the late 80's. And I'm in my early 40s. But this car is something that I truly want. I don't like all the electronics in newer cars. I like throttle cables and manual windows. You know, the good stuff. But this is a car I would deal with that stuff

These are cool looking, they changed a lot. Though I haven't been in these new ones. I got to drive a 1960 Corvette once. It is my uncle's and he is going to replace the transmission clutch or something. So I learned how to drive a manual for the first time in it! The new Corvettes are more about technology it seems now and no longer offered in manual unfortunately. Personally I prefer the older ones! Was fun.

I love the looks of this car, I'm British, I love European design but always thought the Corvette was the best of America and this latest version is in my Top 2 with the Lotus Emira for best looking car today. But the 'vette gives so much performance for so little money, it's truly fantastic!!

Lady Prelude is buried further up in the driveway and I don't think anyone will be catching a glimpse until spring.

Bill, at 5:28 in the video we have a ninja, stealth cat with black and white fur make its way in the background from left to right just above the roof line of the vette. I'm surprised you missed it. Also as far as cleaning the windshield or any other hard to reach areas for that matter, try the new Rain-X wand for glass. My mother in law bought me one as a stocking stuffer so to speak for Christmas, and it is amazing.

Bill, Welcome Back! Glad you made it back and didn't meet your end to some savage Disney park animal escapee while up in Kissimmee. Thanks for the no-nonsense review of the new Corvette. Agree with what you said. The car is a technological marvel at the price point that it is at. I am curious how well they will hold their value in the market, especially as performance EV sports cars, and sports sedans hit the market. I am concerned that soon owners of ICE cars will be ridiculed for making noise, consuming petroleum, and having an all out blast with our desire to have continued freedom with the independent drive.
