exactly what my brand new 2022 does (bought it three weeks ago) ... noticed it within the first mile of driving it... i referred to it as the transmission "slipping" before it engaged..thanks so much for going through this... now I have a talking point with the dealer.

If it’s intermittent I would first inspect the harness in the area of the accident damage for any sign of a pinched harness. I’ve gotten trucks from the body shop that had intermittent elect problems after a wreck and it almost always ends up being a blown fuse (most common) or a broken wire that the ins is still intact. Check all fuses then move the wire harness and see if anything changes

I have a 2021 Off Road and have had zero problems. I recently switched from a Subaru with the CVT so I got used backing off on the gas while accelerating to avoid the shift into higher gears. I drive like an old lady though, so take that with a grain of salt.

Same goes for the Toyota camry 2020 transmission. Its jerky and I found out that using a new type of oil during an oil change actually helped my camry run better. I don’t know if u do your own oil change maybe try using a high quality oil cause the car to run better. Also you can disconnect the negative terminal on the battery and turn on the headlights and leave it for 5 mins and it would reset the computer and help the transmission run better but give it a couple of days to reset itself and drive the car around and hopefully this helps because the dealership couldn’t help me so I did some research and my car runs way better!! Good luck

My 2020 TRD off road was intermittently going into neutral from 3rd to 4th. Brought to dealer numerous times with under 1000 miles. It would go into neutral and revs would redline if not careful before slamming into 4th. It would only happen mostly on first starts of the day. I filmed it and dealer still did nothing for me. I am glad I leased this lemon. It stopped doing this at around 1000 miles and now has 14000.

A while back I bought a used 05 Tacoma that would rev high coming out of 1st or 2nd gear before finally hard shifting to 3rd. It was kinda worrisome when getting on the freeway. Toyota techs told me it was fine (weird lol). I got the truck up to about 238k miles and traded it in because the engine had some trouble. Plan on getting a trd off-road one of these days. Best trucks around in my opinion.

I bought a 2017 Tacoma from salvage auction too and was totaled because the rear axle was “bent” , it really just had a dent on it.. still needed to be replaced but found one for 1800 and the truck is running great now, 17k miles later no problems at all.. why did the Insurance totaled it? They just rather not risk they’re asses, it’s a liability that could potentially cost them more if they fix something that should’ve been fixed.. it’s a case by case thing really..

Congress on rebuilding back that beautiful Toyota tacoma. I heard all the 3 generation Toyota tacoma has transmission problems of hunting the gears on the automatic. There software is not the greatest. Like how u said on your own truck it was hunting the gears. That 2020 Toyota tacoma has a different problem and i think u are on the right track of thinking it could be the wires or silicone. Look into the OV tuning . The people who made this program improved the transmission so it doesnt hunt gears no more and also improved the trucks performance as well. I have 2017 Tacoma but in manual transmission so i dont have these problems. I have already 250000kms on my teuck still runs like new. Keep up the good work.

That's what one gets when selecting a taco with the automatic transmissions in this generation tacomas. I'm enjoying good low end torque, strong power and a fun reliable drive with my 2021 TRD Off Road 6 speed manual Taco. I don't need the auto drive mode (terrain mode selector or crawl control) because I control it with my mind and foot while on 4low when going through some very rough terrain. Some will whine about this. I got to test it out last week during my vacation in Wyoming.

@@3rdgenbestgen21 Yes, Toyota still makes manual for 2021. They only make a handful. I put in an order with Toyota back in Dec 2020 and had to wait 3 months before it was in my hands. Looks like you have not been keeping up with Tacomas. Toyota used to make manual 4Runners, last was the year 2000. Toyota used to make Rav4 and Camry manuals as well. My first Toyota truck was a T100 I had solenoid issues. Similar behavior and problems. I ended up getting them replaced. I know this is a far shot, but rather than replacing the transmission fluid at the dealer, what if you replaced it yourself with something different like the ACDelco Pro Full Synthetic Dexron VI Automatic Transmission fluid which is compatible with the Tacoma 2020? Maybe it won't do anything, maybe it might... Since the solenoids open and close valves that allow the fluid to flow, I'm just wondering if the sticking can be caused by the fluid itself.

Definitely heard about it and had a bunch at first complaining about the shift feel, but a couple software updates later and we don’t really have any complaints now. I’ve been a tech for over a decade now and have only seen 1 that I can recall being replaced. I have replaced a couple engines personally but no transmissions so far. I’m sure hundreds of people who have had theirs fail find a popular site to express their experience with a bad part. But hundreds of bad complaints compared to the hundreds of thousands on the road with no issues is a small number..

I was very interested in buying a 2020 Tacoma recently until I started researching and found many people are getting rid of them while they are still under 10k miles. A mechanic told me Toyota is having major problems with their onboard computers and it's what's causing all these issues. How can they build such great cars but have all these issues with the trucks. The mechanic told me to go buy a Ford which I don't want to do. I've dreamed of owning a Toyota truck for years, now I'm hesitant.

Yeah I just got offered a ridiculously good number for my 2015 on trade bought a 21 that was enroute to the dealership, asked if they could find me a manual TRD off-road, and that told me probably 8 months wait because the dealerships don't order them for stock in the lot. And things being what they are the Fauchi/China virus. I didn't want to miss out on the awesome trade value so I pulled the trigger on a full decked out non pro truck. I'm happy with it, but did just order a pedal monster for it, I don't like the laggy pedal response

@@America1st69 I’m not running my mouth? Obviously proper troubleshooting and diagnostics comes first. Literally all I’m saying is when it comes to actually replacing parts on a transmission the solenoids are typically much easier as you don’t need to remove the transmission for it. While doing the actual gears and clutch packs requires removal of the transmission. You don’t have to believe me if you don’t want to. Well if you've got two solenoids acting up I'd pull wiring diagrams from the factory service manual. Locate both solenoids in the FSM wiring diagrams and look to see if they share any circuits. This includes any sensor inputs that may control only those two solenoids. There would likely be a power circuit and control circuit turning power on and off for each solenoid. If there are I'd focus on any of those electrical components first. After that I'd visually inspect the electrical connections called out in the wiring diagrams to ensure the connections are secure and you should take the opportunity to check continuity between the connections to see if any of the wires are broken etc. After that I'd look at the FSM and see what is involved in pulling those solenoids. If that is too daunting, which honestly it may be since this is an auto transmission, I'd call a transmission shop. If your friend has a second ride and is willing to spend a few days/weeks/months tearing down the transmission and playing find the gremlin, then you two would pull the tranny and start tearing it down. If this is the route, read the FSM thoroughly and make sure you have every tool and replacement part/gasket etc needed and you've got a clear step by step understanding of what needs to be done before touching a wrench. Then have at it. Troubleshooting is fun!

This issues sounds very similar to what my sister car was dealing with. But her car was a 06 VW Rabbit (Golf) with a 6 speed auto. The issue doesn't happen when it is cooler or when you are driving when the car is cold. The issue starts to show up when the car is up to operating temperature or warm or hot outside. My sister's car when it shifted from 3rd to 4th, was like the same issue like you are dealing with, like the car is in feels like it's in neutral then it shifts hard into the 4th gear, at times causing the car to jerk forward. The issue with the VW transmission was the Valve body in the transmission. Funny enough that VW transmission was made my Aisin (Toyota ish). It's a labor intensive job, but it can be done. It sounds like the same issue like my sisters car, it shouldn't be happening on a new Tacoma like that, but my guess is when it got in the wreck, thats how the transmission got messed up. It may have not showed issues right away like what happened to the TRD Pro, overtime till now the issue popped up. But it will just keep getting worse and worse until it is fixed.

I have a first gen Tacoma project with the A340E tranny that’s experienced similar symptoms- jolt on shifting into gear, and kicking while shifting between low gears. I also found a few small metal shards while flushing the transmission yesterday so I’m thinking my best and most economical option is to buy a low mileage salvage tranny and swap it in. Thoughts? I’m worried I’m investing in a bad luck truck like you said. The previous owner put in a new OEM radiator and cooling hoses, the engine is clean and strong, the rear end has been replaced, and the suspension has already been rebuilt. What more could possibly go wrong, right? 😬

I would put it in S and manually shift the car yourself to find out what gears are not jumping right into gear. Also if you still get problems shifting manually then it could be an electrical short causing the solenoid to always stay open. Also I’m not sure on cars but you should be able to hear the solenoid actuate so you could try to place something there to monitor the sounds.

@@edwardnelson3413 insurance companies will only total based on cost at a 70-75% rate of vehicle value, it rarely has anything to do with the component's condition. So even a non-totalled vehicle can have drivetrain issues that will haunt the owner if they aren't careful to address it. My coworker had his VW JETTA TDI totaled from construction overspray because it got into the interior and it all had to be "replaced". A 18k car at the time.

If doing this gets rid of the kicking from the transmission then it's not a mechanical problem it's more of a software/electrical problem. just my opinion.

I don’t really have any issues with my 2018 either, and I live at high elevation too in Colorado. But, I am convinced that Toyota set the default shift pattern for the 3rd Gen as what would would normally be an Eco mode, as it does seem to aggressively go into the overdrive gears. I think the ECT button is what probably should be the standard shift mapping. My $.02. Hope you can get this truck’s issue squared away!! I believe it to be a ECU programming issue. This truck doesn't appear to have a ECU issue, but something internal. Hard shifting, slipping and gear hunting are three separate issues.

Now I just see the truck was wrecked. That’s my world! I’ve done collision repair my hole life. I grew up fixing totaled cars. But if you know what ur doing and willing to todo the work they are just as good as any vehicle. I have seen some vehicles that will cause trans problems from the accident. It’s rare, but does happen. What will happen is the insides of the trans “the guts” will jerk if it’s a hard hit and strike the inside of the casing. Doing damage to electrical components inside the trans. Like speed sensors that’s tells the truck when to shift , or fluid lines could get damaged. But from the look of that wreck I wouldn’t expect it came from the accident. Although it was serious damaged it didn’t appear to be a really hard hit. But drop ur trans pan, and take a quick peek at the valve body. Make sure there is NOTHING in pan expect fluid. If it was accident related you’ll prolly see it when you remove the pan. If you need any info just yell, I might be able to sort you out. My shop is in Kentucky. If you ever in Ky I’ll gladly sort you out. Any questions I can help ya with, just yell. Also Chloe, check your fuses,, check for any fluid lines that run outside bell housing , it’s possible they may have gotten pinched. If you have a scanner, hook it up and take it for ride. Good scanners will read in real time the valve body shift points, and all sorts of crap like that. Don’t give up, more than likely that will be easy to fix. Just getting your eye on the exact cause may be biggest job.
