This 200 year old chair was too hard to restore but I still did it
In this video I will restore about 200 year old corner chair from Sweden. These are called also powder chairs, from the time when hair powdering was popular. The work took much more time, than I was prepared for. Was the result worth it? Let me know in the comments.

I've Never Quite Understood the Allure of painting a Faux wood grain over Actual wood. That is until I saw You do it. Really Beautiful. It really is Art. It All depends on Artistic Interpretations doesn't It?
It was an amazing restoration. After watching this video, I realized that I shouldn't complain that handmade furniture is expensive.
My grandpa used to repair chairs like this. His father was a reed weaver by trade, and this certainly had my interest when I was young, but unfortunately I never learned this. Thank you for the memory.
I watch about 15 restoration ppl on KZread. You sir have no equal! No one does what you do. I bought a sheet of cane to so a rocking chair and that was hard enough. Fantastic craftsmanship all the way around 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼🇺🇸

Yes. He should take on an apprentice. Antiques will remain in demand. Today, Americans covet mid-century pieces too.
The fake wood effect really works when you do everything with that technique! I was surprised by how fake and bad it looked when you first started, but then altogether it tricks you into thinking it's real wood! Nicely done!

Your patience is amazing. I would have lost my mind and the will to live after doing and re-doing the painting with cardboard one hundred times. A beautiful job, as always.
The time and diverse set of finely tuned carpentry and artisanal skills you and your friend invested in restoring this historically important and beautiful chair will be appreciated for another 200 years! It's always a pleasure to watch you save these thoughtfully chosen pieces from the trash heap! Your channel deserves exponential growth in the years to come. Best Regards from Connecticut!
my comment on your videos remains unchanged, simply genius ❤
I agree with everyone's comments! Such a labor of love and determination! Well done, sir.
I've never seen anyone actually weave rattan onto a piece of furniture before, that was interesting. You did a great job restoring it.
The best furniture restorer on youtube, bar none!
Never thought something like this was possible; this is incredible. here's to another 200 years.👏👏👏👏
What an incredible piece of work, that seat is breathtaking! All your patience and skill absolutely shows 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
You know I'm always dubious whenever that faux wood method is used but you somehow always make it looks amazing in the end result. Truly a master of your craft.
You saved this beautiful old lady! I love watching you work. Just amazing,
At first, I didn't think the cardboard trick would work, but it DOES perfectly and creates a very natural effect a bit like wood grain. You have brilliant skills and patience to re-create the seat's original design, and the whole project is excellent. I hope you sold it for enough to redeem the hours you spent. You are one of the best restorers on 'KZread'.
Wow!!!I would give two thumbs up if I could. This is true craftsmanship. The fact that you didn’t use cane webbing roll, but designed weaved your own. It’s definitely a beauty. Great job as always. Love your channel!!
The work you did was magical! you gave a new life to an abused chair. My wife inherited a very similar chair from her grandmother years ago. To date it is a beautiful piece. excellent work, well done.
Awesome restoration, Ahti! Really loved watching you do the faux wood finish. I did that to a 200 year old child’s rocking chair years ago and it brought back memories. I tried caning a chair once too, and it was really hard…the end result was awful. Glad you sought help with that, they did a great job. Thanks for the video, the chair is gorgeous!
Ahti, I have been looking forward to seeing this restoration since you mentioned it on FB. Having myself done some faux wood graining with a comb with some teeth broken out, I was fascinated with your using the torn cardboard. Your crafting the wood “knot” was mesmerizing! Glad you had a friend who was able to help you with that pesky caneing. Thank you, as always, for the filming and editing.
I wasn't too sure where you were going with the colour, but yet again, you show how expertly and lovingly, you restore antiques. Fantastic job. 😃
A beautiful little chair!! And I love the way you always think about future restorers!!😍❤️
OMG. You cane too?!? Amazing, it's beautiful!
It takes a strong person to not only ask for help, but to also fess up to it later. This is a beautiful restoration, and your friend did an awesome job on the cane seat.
As always, you never fail to amaze me. What an honor and privilege to watch your videos, thank you for sharing them with us. I absolutely love your faux wood effect. I’ve never really liked the modern faux wood tools, it looked fake. As a painter myself, and now dipping my toe into furniture restoration, I should have thought about using cardboard. Brilliant!! Thank you for your talent and inspiration 💖
Besides being an amazing furniture restorer, we know Ahti (or someone he knows) loves Philadelphia cream cheese! Great job. I absolutely love the finished chair. Your customer must be thrilled!
That's a certified AT Restoration™ time what are we waiting for!!!!
I don't think it's a fake wood design at all but a spectacular looking wood design done by an artist and furniture restorer with the skills of a genius. When I see a notification from you I go quickly to your channel and watch because I know that I will be amazed at the quality of the piece you make new again. I just love 💕 your endeavors and I can't wait for the next one to come out. Superior artist 😎. Thank you sir, for another restoration. ❤😂🎉
Wow!! 40 hours doing the seat! I was thinking how much patience you have to weave all of that. It's beautiful!
You saw the beauty hidden there and brought it to light. my first thought was 'what an ugly old chair! why would you want to restore that?' I was so wrong! Thank you for sharing your Art. It's beautiful💕💕
Still one of the only channels I hit Like before watching the video.
DAMMMMMMM AT WHAT A TRANSFORMATION!!!!!!!! absolutely reincarnated!!!!! whoever owns this.. is going to freak out!!!! its GORGEOUS!!!!!! OUTSTANDING WORK!!!!!!!
This chair turned out BEAUTIFUL your knowledge of different ways they made chairs back then is amazing. I would have stripped it all off and never thought twice about the black. Actually I thought it was another layer of paint like the white. You do such amazing work. Thank you for sharing and you have a great day

I agree. I would not have recognized the faux woodgrain treatment as being any different than just a layer of black paint.
While there are some good videos of restorers, carpenters and craftsmen on KZread, for me none, and I said, none compare to you Ahti. I say this for the entire package: competence, brilliance, the work you do almost like perfect magic. Not to mention the excellent quality of your videos without those unnecessary distractions like landscapes, pets, conversations or boring explanations, tasteless music, etc. Your work is almost magical, your sensitivity when dealing with any piece is enviable. Although there are very few good creators, restorers, artisans or carpenters in this network, none are at your level of excellence. I look forward to your videos and Thank you for your mastery and generosity in letting me participate as a spectator of your incredible creations!
You, sir, are an artist! What you do to restore the furniture is a work of amazing art. You are SO patient! I am so glad that I found you!
Each move you made, I was stunned. What a most exquisite restoration work you just did to a 200-year old corner chair. I had wished I have in possession of all your work in my home but firstly, I have to purchase a mansion house. I am always looking forward to seeing each video you aired, from Massachusetts.

I have one client who moved from Estonia to Canada and transported all the furniture with her, after I restored them. If the shipping container is full, then the transport is not so expensive, per piece.

@@ATRestoration I much appreciated your reaction and that I am keeping it in mind.
AT and Julian Baumgartner, but AT is my favorite. I hope this work was done for a really rich person who can afford to pay for 80 man-hours to cane a chair. I really enjoyed this video!
This is again not a restoration, it is art. Amazing how you can create faux wood. Still enjoying every restoration from you, Ahti. I also like the smell of linseed&turpentine-mix. Some people use turpentine against rats, they hate that smell.
After all that work on the cane, I really wouldn't want to sit on it. Beautiful.
What a beautiful job you did! Thank you for giving its life back. I have a small table that needs you.
I hope your videos will inspire some rare individuals, who see your talent and skill set, to carry forward this art form. I think there are probably not too many people who can do what you do.
Much respect, that chair is about as perfect as one can be and I'd bet that it looks better now than it did 200 years ago.
In doing such an excellent restoration you are paying a great tribute to the old master who first created this piece.
A chair suitable for Marie Antoinette to have her hair powdered. Wonderful job & yes it was worth the time & effort. 😊
You're the Man. Ahti. No one does restorations quite like you. I love your channel and never miss a video😊
Won’t lie… I was doubting your skills when you didn’t completely sand it down. I apologize for not trusting your process. Looks AMAZING.
There are many who sit at a quilt frame for hours, weeks & months on end, enjoying the process. Caning is no different... you either love doing it, or you don't. Was the faux finish & caning worth it? Yes Adhi... so worth it 👍
Oh my goodness, don't know why anyone would paint such beautiful wood! You brought it back to life to live another 200; years! Extremely stunning, exquisite job! 😊❤
The results are breathtaking! That could have been the way it looked when it was first built.
Wow! I have not seen one of these chairs in a very long time, they are a very rare find. Your work is, as always, impeccable. Thank you 🙏 for your videos.
You, sir, are a fantastic artist and restorer. It is always a pleasure to watch your restorations. I come away with a great sense of satisfaction!
As always, beautiful work with exemplary patience. Also, no mindless chatter, just great action. Many thanks
I am so glad you replaced the cane seat. I'm amazed at your vast knowledge!
The secret is to not take it too seriously! Great advice. I've never see the woven seat done completely from scratch. That was nice to see.
What an amazing and difficult restoration! Stressed me out watching you with that rattan. 😃Beautiful job!
depression era furniture used techniques like this to mimic higher quality woods
That cane seat part is a work of art! Impressive!
Another beauty! I appreciate the ASMR sounds. You are my favorite since there is no music or talk talk talk ( both can be annoying). The sounds made while recreating another re-masterpiece is simply lovely.
You, sir, are a master! Every time I watch one of your videos, I have to wonder who taught you so many different techniques and how long it took you to become proficient at them? It is pure joy to watch you work your magic!!!

Absolutely beautiful.. the master at work again ❤
Oh thank you so much for rescuing this chair! I don`t want to know how many furnitures have been additionally damaged by this strange fashion trend called "shabby chic" where people developed the idea that old furniture could be improved by painting them with a completely improper white paint. It makes me happy to see such craftsmen like you who knows how it really works.
@BrooksMoses

Indeed -- but the "shabby chic" trend has damaged the old furniture far less than many trends that had the idea that old furniture could be improved by throwing it away and buying new. With so many of these things, I try to keep in mind that everyone who took an old piece of furniture and painted it some color-of-the-month and put it to use was someone who kept it out of the trash for another few decades, and without them we often wouldn't have the piece at all.
It went from a cute little stool with a sloppy paint job to an elegant piece that belongs in a parlor. I love it when you need to do wood grain painting as part of a restoration
Please never change your intro/outro music its sooo good
your knowledge, talent and patience....unsurpassed! bravo! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
When I saw you flicking all those tiny paint specks out of the backrest, my admiration for your professionalism skyrocketed. You're a master.
Conscientious repairer, you're the only one.
What an amazing job! You’ve certainly given this lovely old piece a gorgeous new “gown”!
The transformation is incredible. Your mastery of techniques is amazing!
Good job from an Italian restourer...
Watching the faux graining was very interesting. In the house where my grandfather was born all the paneling under the front staircase is faux painted. Apparently it was fashionable at one time. Thanks for sharing.
turned out beautifully - don't blame you for getting help on that rattan, just watching it was making my eyes cross!
The beauty hidden beneath that thick ugly white paint has been "Set Free" thanks to your Amazing skill. This is probably the most fascinating piece I've seen. Fantastic rebirth.
This turned out REALLY BEAUTIFUL! Im glad you restored the original finish and the caned seat. Its much prettier!!❤
A thing of beauty 🙌🏻 So enjoyable - great music too!
got a touch of excitment seeing you'd uploaded a video, do enjoy watching your craftmanship
A lesson in caning as a bonus! What a beautiful and truly authentic restoration. Just incredible. Much respect to you sir.
That is master craftsmanship. Period!
This chair is a beauty now thanks to the patient work of your magic hands! Bravo!! Well done!!🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊
You had the patience of a saint to do that caning. The chair is beautiful!
OMG! You are not just an artist, you are magician! I adore your work!

You do magnificent work. Every piece is special.

What a beautiful result. The cane work looked very hard, but when done it is great. I have to admire your patience. Beautiful chair. Thank you for sharing.
