The master cylinder on most chevrolet car and trucks are terrible. I have a 1946 chevrolet truck and it took a can of wd40, heat and a lot of cussing.

I love the Long Form Vice Grip Garage content. Not this 20 min type stuff. We know it edits out all the little details that are important and motivational.
When I was growing up, my Dad flew from our home in Upper Michigan down to Texas on a business trip. Instead of flying home, he drove... in a '51 Chevy "hardtop convertible" (which wasn't really a convertible, but had the LOOKS of a convertible) just like the one you have here. He was amazed when he got it home. "That car didn't burn a single drop of oil!" I have really fond memories of being in that car with my Dad. "Son, are you prepared to engage FULL CRUISE MODE?!" "YEAH!" On the command "Engage!" we would furiously roll the windows down, and then make a big show of leaning back in the seats as we slowly rolled down the streets of town. I miss that car. And I miss my Dad.

Wanted to let Derek know that my first car was a 1950 Chevrolet DeLuxe 4-door sedan. There was more chrome on the inside than the outside. Even had a tube-type radio...it had to warm up before you could hear anything. They are great cars.

Derek , my first car was a 51 Chevy . My dad and I put new floors in the front. With Old metal truck signs he had gotten from where he was working.i drove it to school.bought it from my uncle for $25.00. I love that old car. that was around 1961 or two. Love your videos and rescues.
Now that was a cool rescue Derik. I have always liked the profile and looks of that year Deluxe.

Talk about patience! This guy has way more than most, not to mention knowledge & skill. You're a pleasure to watch.
love VGG, and most off motortrend, but, the issue with out of usa subscription, is baffling to me. got kicked out of motortrend on demand the very minute discovery channel entered the chat, and no vpn or untrue location data would allow me to PAY for it, so yeah. love Derek and his family doing what they do best, unfortunately i'm at a loss when it comes to Motortrend on demand, they apparently don't want European money, maybe it has flees or something.

@@hemidart7 its been going on for a few years already. But I do watch him on KZread every time he posts a new video. Same with Finnegan’s Garage. I was a subscriber from the start of MTOD. It was Discovery Channel that axed the availability for non American subscribers.
Brings back High School days in 67. Had a 51 convertible. Yours is in slightly better shape. Thanks for the memories.
Derek is the best thing on KZread. I think it's easy to see that the GM under floor location for the master cylinder was less than convenient. Even in California were I'm from rust made removal a challenge. The fact that you did not have a hanging break pedal was not worth the complications associated with the geometry.
@rupe53

You have to remember that floor mounted brake pedals are a throwback to the days of mechanical brakes and LONG linkage rods along the frame. When they converted to "juice brakes" they left everything else alone.
Derek makes everything better!

I wanted a Corvette so my dad in '61, bought me my very first car, just like this one. He paid $47 and I named it the "Rat" cause it wasn't a Corvette. Had a blast learning about cars and even took the engine out to hone the cylinders, valve job and re-shim the bearings. Did it need it no, but I did it. Found a '55 Chevy Bel Air convertible rolling chassis and sold the Rat to one of my friends. That was a looooong time ago.
Derek can fix anything 🎉

I have been watching you since you had like 100 subscribers. This is a special one. 44 years. All new brake system. You must have had a lot of time in that one.
There a removable panel in the driver wheel well to give you access to the master cylinder. I used it on my '53 Bel Air. Made it a lot easier.
That's a car I would love to have. Well done on being so patient with the brakes. A thankless job everytime.

Dawm you got lucky. 44 years. Sitting. And she fared right up.
I got one of these in the early 70's as a kid. It had sat since the early 60's. It was suprizingly easy to get going. Even converting to 12 volts was easy. It was a very dependable nice riding car. The built them like tanks back then.
That was a good episode, remember watching it last year!
My dad had one of those, I ruin the motor mounts then he went to a 56 Dodge I a got him to order the Sur-grip read end . We had snow and a big hill to go up that was not paved. It worked great. only had to shovel one side. Thanks for this one.
You picked a good one. Those GMC six bangers don't die easily!!
Very enjoyable vid,thumbs up.Thanks.
We had one of those when I was a kid. I remember seeing myself broken up in those chrome dash slots.
It's a good feeling getting something driving after someone else has given up on it... even better when it's been sitting for years!
Dereck got motor trend on life support, bringing the vgg fam.
I love seeing an old car get back on the road. Especially one as old as me.
I had a half dozen of those 50-54 Chevys when I was a kid. Always started and ran forever.

That's way cool. Derek u did a nice job put the shine juice on it it's drive able
Finally, You have one that really is a Bel Air. The two door hardtop, on the Deluxe trim model, was the first to have the Bel Air name.
Nice Coupe, worth the effort.
love Derek VIDS
I want to see the whole thing! Love this chevy!
That was almost as easy as an Australian finding cheap freight prices from America! My 1950 Styleline brakes were pretty easy too. And by that I mean I replaced them after they didn't stop the 350 V8 I put in while idling at stop lights. Even the new brakes aren't great.... perfect! Really awesome to see you have fun just like I did with my Chevrolet!
Derek does it best!
“We got a 1 barrel” .. solid gold!!
I aspire to be this level of get it done on my 59 el Camino Wow that was awesome
