This 1,100-Year-Old Beer's For You: Recreating Ancient Ales

For University of Colorado classics professor Travis Rupp, the best way to bring ancient civilizations back to life is in a pint glass. Rupp works on a special projects team at Avery Brewing Company to brew beers the way that ancient Egyptians, Peruvians and Vikings did. While these beers are certainly different from their modern-day descendants, at the end of the day, a cold one the ancestral way is always a good thing. Cheers.

    The thing I love about alcohol and history is 1. Almost every cocktail has a story. 2. Humans haven't fundamentally changed all that much over time. Back in 1682 people still enjoyed a good beer, they still talked to each other about their crushes and exes, and they still walked into rooms, forgot why they walked into that room, left the room, and then remembered why they went into the other room in the first place.

    It's not like I don't like it. I have tasted it a little bit for some events. Don't wanna be the square. But, I know myself very well I willl get addicted to it so I had to stop while I can. So, I don't drink it if there is no real reason. Ain't gonna ruin my life over drinks. I'm not going to fool myself saying "nah, I'm strong enough. I deserved some fun anyway". It's been notoriously known drinks are the place to hide from the truth. My life won't be easy. If something bad happens I need to recover fast instead of running away. I'm not going to make a place to runaway. I have to force myself to face the problems.

    The problem with brewing a 1500 year old beer is that you need their yeast, its far from the same otherwise. You need the way the yeast come to being and then have that kind of yeast with the beer you make.

  • @danielmarinov3560

    @danielmarinov3560

    CDarkSilver Well natural yeast is found everywhere in the world and species of yeast in different regions are pretty well documented, especially if they're used for fermenting so it's not hard to import. He even says in the video that certain cultures used bread yeast, which couldn't be easier to find, you mix some flour with water and leave it in a bowl for 2-3 days and you have a starter for your ancient beer... or bread.

    Daniel Marinov yea true but the changes of the weather and what's in the air is very different depending on country aswell as food and allot of other variables that change so even with lots of research it's still close to impossible to get it right. Even though allot of research could put you close to the yeast of different ancient cultures aswell as making beer of their kind.

    Seems about right, it's probably alot of small-scale experimentation and luck to find the right one. The closest they can get is probably finding a somewhat regional brewing manual which describes the process of making the starting culture and limiting the possible yeast species from there. It's definitely not an easy job, but it's awesome and you can tell the dude has a ton of passion and love for his craft.

    I wasn't aware Ancient Egyptians had beer. I had assumed that beer as we understand it was a European thing, and that the alcohols made back in the day were composed of fermented fruit so were more like wines, ciders, or meads (considering the ancient Egyptians loved honey, mead in particular for them). I'm curious where he got the research for his recipe from.

    Could someone help me find where I can buy this beer? I wanted to create a an ancient Mesopotamian brew in college but didn't have the time, research or resources. I just want to have another connection to my routes other than my family's cooking. Hopefully I'll get a chance one day. Fun fact, the ancient Mesopotamians would drown the brewmaster in the brew he created if it became a spoiled batch. Beer was like gold back then.

    To quote this guy who makes beer all day for a living"I like to have a glass of ancient Egyptian beer at the end of a hard day's work" is easy proof that he's not joking about this stuff. To go even further into my own research this must've been some hardy beer (even though I've never tasted it) based off of the supposed wages of the standard pyramid builder, which was just two gallons of beer! I think this must've been the majority of the food and water a human needed besides certain treats probably high in vitamin C since they would've all died of scurvy unless the beer itself had the Vitamin C to supplement the loss of the electrolyte due to alcohol consumption. I must say! They had it figured out one way or another!
