Definitely Gabor Szabo ! You can find him in early to mid 60s versions of Chico Hamilton records on Impulse. What a great lineup that also includes Charles Lloyd My personal favorite is on the El Chico record and Gabor Szabo does an exquisite version of " People " .

Never thought I was old enough for jazz, but listening to you guys enthusing on youtube I've been tempted and I've now been checking the bargain bins over here and there seems to be plenty of cheap jazz albums available, as a newbie these are a great way of getting the a lot of stuff to listen to, I've probably added a whole jazz section to my collection for the price of a couple of audiophile records. Not sure if I'm buying the 'right' stuff but enjoying it.. Clifford Brown, Milt Jackson, Lou Donaldson, Jack McDuff, Dextor Gordon to name a few but my two favourite purchases so far were based on the album covers alone: Very Saxy - Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis - Buddy Tate - Coleman Hawkins - Arnett Cobb and Giants Of The Organ Come Together Jimmy McGriff & Groove Holmes.

Great show

Brilliant video Mazzy. This is the kind of thing which needs to be repeated over and over these days. The current trend towards audiophile pressings creates a false sense of shame for anyone buying cheap records. I have heard people making excuses for their albums, even though, as you say: the music should come first. People are beginning to lose their way and videos like these need to be made to get back to what this record collecting malarkey is really all about.

I see value in both (sometimes), but I agree that some go for the sound over the substance sometime.

"Enjoy the music". Certain members of the vinyl community should take note. There's plenty of great albums out there that sound great on vinyl, but aren't audiophile. As someone who is just starting to get into jazz, this is invaluable. Sure those records all sound great Mazzy and if people love them then they can look at upgrading them. It's got to be about enjoying the music first. I feel too many people have records in their collection because they feel they should, rather than they like the album.

Love siphoning from your music knowledge. I agree with your predilection for picking up John Coltrane and I was curious as to your opinions of Alice’s output. After all these years I latched onto Journey in Satchidananda and was floored. I do have an affinity for eastern influences and am dismayed I missed this one.

I have several of the albums you mentioned. The Dizzy album is part of the Savoy Sessions series, all highly recommended. I found the Trane album at an estate sale for a couple of bucks. Great compilation. The Earl Hines record is a great intro to one of the best but underrated jazz pianists. Most of my albums are non audiophile and many of them sound great, especially the OJC. Recently picked up some Howard Rumsey and the Lighthouse All Stars reissued by OJC that sound great.

I just bought an OJC copy of Lush LIfe today. It sounds great to me. I love Gabor Szabo. I'm looking forward to the new "Dreams" reissue. Great list. Take care.

A few records I ordered arrived yesterday and one of them was a record I didn’t order. I purchased my first Bad Books vinyl but what arrived was The Bill Evans Trio - Portrait In Jazz. Now before I discovered your channel I had zero interest in Jazz but watching your videos have made me want to branch out. I decided not to go to the trouble of shipping back the record so therefore this is my first Jazz record. I have not played it yet but sampled it on Spotify last night and it’s not bad. I was happy you featured him as one of the 30.Thanks for your channel!

Vince Guaraldi was my entrance to this new journey into jazz and you’re 100% right, Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus is a real treat. His music on the Peanuts specials brings back so many memories and it’s mind blowing to me that as a kid we were exposed to this amazing music.

Mazzy, Tony from Chicago. Well I'm in the office downtown and had you on KZread. I just started listening to Wes Montgomery's California Dreaming per your video; great recommendation, I love it! Keep on truckin as Crumb would say. I'm going to take you up on the other jazz favs as well.

My logic for jazz is only buying 3.5 or 4 star penguin jazz rated releases. This method has its flaws but it keeps me sane. Regarding classical music, I subscribe to Dave Hurwitz's classical music critic website. I will usually pick up his recommended reference recordings of the general repertoire. His KZread channel is amazing as well. Great video!

Weather Report Heavy Weather is a classic and can’t forget Prez Lester Young I love the song A Ghost of A Chance great non Audiophile jazz Mazzy.

Oh and Art Pepper. I have several. Turned onto him from the Amazon Prime show Bosch. I have two Mel Time lps from the 60s featuring Art Pepper Trio.

Love Wes. And I own several albums of his. California Dreaming in one of my favorites too. You mentioned George Benson. I've been a fan of George pre Breezin' in the early 70s. White Rabbit was around '73 and his version of California Dreaming is my favorite. The Spanish style guitarist adds so much. I recommend Blue Benson if you haven't heard that lp. He does a nice tribute to his mentor, Wes.

Great video. I have been a fan of the Prestige and Milestones albums since my high school days in the 70's. Great sound and liner notes. I have even found some of the dreaded Trip Records pressings to be better than decent. I have the Helen Merrill w Clifford Brown and it's an excellent listen.

Cool stuff! Some of my favorite jazz records i own are the non audiophile and will never be reissued. Most bough for under $20. Enjoy The Music. 🎶☮️🎶

Hi Mazzy, I enjoyed your 30 jazz selections, I like many of them, and own a few of them. My taste is pretty close to yours in this regard. Do you have any South African jazz in your collection, like Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim etc ? I grew up listing to most these guys, having come from there and there is a lot of great stuff to be discovered.

Informative video mazzy. I just bought a bill evans portrait in jazz on early ojc. Cant afford the mofi audiophile or original. Did have original years ago. The early ojc's were remastered from original tapes and sound great!

I couldn't agree more! Let's not get caught up on the audiophile gravy train.... I have many of the selections that you featured. That Blue Note Series has some incredible tittles, I especially love the Gil Evans and Andrew Hill albums.

Primal Roots is a truly great Lp! Not sure if I would class it as jazz but who cares it's great great great music!

And the cool thing about many jazz albums, such as the Art Pepper Meets.. is that they were recorded well in the first place. So they will sound pretty darn great without having to break the bank on an audiophile oop pressing.

Really interesting list with a number of artists and albums I wasn't familiar with. But I got loads of Charlie Parker so we're cool there, right? Thanks for the tips!

I have some of those! The OJC Kenny Burrell/John Coltrane and Art Pepper are believed to be analogue mastered.

Speaking of the 'doubles', I have a Prestige from 1975 that pairs Eric Dolphy and Ron Carter's first albums (Far Cry and Where?) As 'Magic'. I mention because to my ear, the remastering for this edition has the bass of both albums higher in the mix. To my ears it sounds richer than the originals - though I've never heard an OG. Would be curious if anybody could compare.

Some great recommendations. Those twofers have nice liner notes too. Jazzologist, I’ll steal that. Earl Hines on Ry’s “ Paradise and Lunch “ the perfect album. Check out Nat Birchalls very fine tribute album to Yusef Lateef “ The Storyteller”. Another day in which I learnt something new. Top of the class Mazzy.

Great video. It is all about the music. I like my Tone Poets and Acoustic Sounds etc but it seems the cheaper just as good Classic Series doesn’t get as much love. Great sounding reissues but perhaps too cheap for some ?. Music is the original social media and these inexpensive great sounding reissues will attract new people in. Keep the videos coming. Excellent stuff Ps. Have you checked out the exciting young jazz scene in London, a lot of it influenced by Afrobeat. Great new artists with amazing original artwork. Check out Ebi Soda, Maisha, Seed Ensemble, Nubya Garcia etc

You surprised me with Oregon & Gabor Szabo acknowledgements. Not may folks tip their hat to them. Nice selection.

Contemporary released many beautifully recorded albums. I have Art Pepper's Smack Up, and others by Hampton Hawes and Leroy Vinnegar. Leroy played on Waiting for the Sun by The Doors and Van Morrison's Saint Dominic's Preview.

When I was in college, we had a copy of Light As A Feather around. It was in heavy rotation, probably for Spain and Five Hundred Miles High. Lo, we see Chick and the band are going to be playing at Tulagi in Boulder. Do we head down to see them? Yes we do. But wait, there's no sign of Flora or Airto. There's a row of Marshall amps. So the first time I heard Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy, it was live.

Love the message of this video. Go for the music, not the pressing!

Earl Hines first came to notice with Louis Armstrong in the late 1920s e.g. West End Blues etc, which effectively wrote the book for all later jazz. Louis seems to be deliberately avoided by 'hipster vinyl' types. None of this music would exist without him.

@@mazzysmusic I saw that but these things can happen when speaking off the cuff like this. Your focus on the musical value, regardless of absolute sonic fidelity is one that is dear to my heart. Most all these old masters from the era before multitrack mixing have various sonic flaws if you go digging deep enough. Superior mastering often makes that more obvious. My interest has been to give these incredible performances their best presentation possible while keeping it all in the pure analog domain. (The exception, of course, is when the source recording itself is digital.)

Cal Tjader “ A night at the Blackhawk “ and “ Solar Heat “: and Szabo covering Donovan’s “ Three King Fishers” all great records but they weren’t especially cheap here in the U.K. Speaking of Donovan , Mazzy you gotta get the new Ace Records comp ( cd only) Hurdy Gurdy Songs 1965-71 with 24 artists covering his songs some never recorded by Don. You’ll love it.

I think the OJC's sound good enough to be considered audiophile. Sometimes a little noisy, but good masterings.

I always go for the music first!

She forgot the lyrics to Mack the Knife and improvised. A 1920's song about a serial killer, no chorus, but despite this a USA No.1 for Bobby Darin in 1959. Its fantastic.

Caravan is from Ellington/Tizol, not Dizzy. He played it well. Confusion with Night in Tunisia? Nice record selection here, though.
