I bought a used 2014 Prius, 30000 km on it in 2016. It has been rock solid. NOTHING has failed on it, not even a light bulb. I did the brakes a few yrs back just because. They were still fine. Couldn't believe they brakes were still good at 80000 km. Got 95000 km on it now. Still gets over 50mpg. Without a doubt the most reliable vehicle i have ever owned and i have owned over 30 in my lifetime.

The first real failures I had was actually due to my catalytic converter being stolen, leading to damaged sensors, a damaged module, and the hybrid battery becoming unbalanced and giving errors bit early. Total cost to deal with the fallout was $2000 which includes the price of me getting a Miller Cat shield installed and reconditioning and fully testing the pack myself. I encourage anyone to get a converter shield, because its a scary time to have a prius right now.

Hi, you're amazing!! my daughter has a 2014 Prius and replaced the head gasket apparently there was some unseen damage now 6 months later it threw a piston arm thru the block. I'm going to be replacing it with a used engine now that I have watched ur videos and now am confident that is the right decision. Thank you for sharing ur extensive knowledge of these vehicles. Would you suggest that I put a 2015 engine in her 2014 Prius to replace the old motor with the newest lowest mileage used engine as possible? And roughly how much do you think would be a fair price for a replacement engine? Any advice will be greatly appreciated, you truly are providing a great service to the less experienced Thanks again, You the man!!!

I drive a 2014 Prius still running strong at 244K miles. I did have to replace the entire fuel pump at 200k, also started consuming oil at 130k. 2 seperate occasions a had to replace 3 ignition couls that exploded.. Fingers crossed I cam get the vehicle to over 300,000 miles

Awesome video! I have my 2010 Prius since new. Now with 173K miles. It still drives great. I am so tempted to get the 2023 one. Sometimes I doubt if it is wise to keep repairing it. You give me the confidence to keep my 13-year-old Prius.

2010 had a recall about the charging side failing earlier than the service life stated . Was no warning other than check hybrid system and limp home power. A new 2000+$$ unit was put in under the recall, but i was in at the deadline 3 yrs ago. Might need to figure out the model number, to tell if it was replaced since your buying so many. Now the fuel gauge is needing replaced, random full to empty with a brief correct read sometimes. Toyota dealers have unique portals into Toyota parts USA, use the local dealers site to enter and find that dealers sales and discounts. Saved 1k on a drive battery, by checking 5 local Tampa dealers.

I never thought I'd buy any vehicle with 235,000 miles. Well, I also had turned down lower mileage gen 2's for $400 and $700. Finally saw another for $400 and couldn't get there in time so drove off with someone else. Yes, still drove, albeit the body looked ghetto. Still, happened to find another ghetto looking lifted model for $1,000 more and decided why not. Even with ABS, VCS and Engine trouble lights on. Was documented well I thought at least and later found from ~210K miles on was via dealership and Japanese auto place. Turned out, the right rear adjustment lever and strut was assembled wrong and bingo redid correctly per spec and two lights and related codes down. Also, reported with a custom exhaust that I found needed the downstream oxygen sensor and catalytic converter which aligned with the engine code and reported corrective actions by the seller and his mechanic. Two more engine codes gone after a new Denso downstream sensor and Autoshack catalytic converter. Now I think what's left is replacing the AF Ratio sensor with a new Denso, though I got a few from the salvage yard to test out before hand since they're returnable and only ~$10. We'll see. I also have a clunking that was reported in the front end that was reported as the Rubbershocks or something with the lift doing. I found the sway bar bushing squeak and need to verify everything is tight like subframe bolts as well just to be safe the more I read and watch regarding that noise. Everything I can test related to tie rods, bearings and cross members seems OK, albeit a crow bar or long breaker bar to really lever on might show something else. Guessing is the front spring diameter is too large with those Rubbershocks so I picked up some 2012 AWD Matrix struts to eventually swap those spring in and remove the Rubbershocks on the front for certain and maybe the rear as well. Though yeah, amazing. The 2013 and on gen 3's are just amazing. I better stop writing now, since I can go on and on seems.

Drew, great videos. I have a 2009 (Mother-in-law), 2010 (Peter’s-me) and 2012 (Wife’s). All great with over 300km (Canada) except my 2010! At 303,000km replaced the engine with a 93,000km engine. Have been dealing with “check Hybrid System” intermittent issues but garage that changed the engine out ultimately said my wiring harness had repairs to it and that I would need to got to Toyota as they had more sophisticated test equipment for hybrids to have the issue resolved! Toyota dealer said the harness repairs were all good and they cleared and said the car was good to go, then I drive for a bit and the check Hybrid system comes back. I Love all 2009, 2010-2015 Prius. What do you recommend I do for my 2010 to get this issue gone for good? Peter in Ontario CA

I do not know if you will get this message, but you may be my last hope I have two issues with my 2010 3rd generation Prius. Background on the car. I bought it new in 2009. Single owner. It has 472,000+ miles. Replaced engine at about 270,000 miles because the head gasket blew. Mechanic said to replace engine for an extra $100 vs head gasket only. Two weeks ago, I had transmission replaced. Both engine and transmission were used units. My car, since the engine was replaced, has been making a noise like when you have bad fuel or the engine is not igniting the fuel on time. It's pinging, not knocking. It does it when engine has been running a while, like when you are waiting at a red light and when you go to green and accelerate, it pings. I get off the accelerator and back on it again and it goes away. Sometimes I have to do that a couple of times before it goes away. Can you tell me if you have experienced this or know how to fix it? The dealership has no idea and an experienced Prius shop has no idea either and neither can replicate the issue. It just happens to me most of the time and when I take it in, it doesn't do it. Love the car and I am shooting for a million miles. The car is very well kept and maintained. HELP PLEASE 🙏

great video! Here in Europe I own a Toyota Auris 2 hybrid, which is in fact a Corolla with the Prius 3 drivetrain. Once in 1 or 2 years I clean the intakemanifold and EGR, soaking it in dieseloil and using oven cleaner, and it runs like a clock. It's a lot of work but it needs to be done to prevent problems with it. And I change oil and filter every 10k km's. It burns no oil and it has 230.000 km's on the odometer. I want to keep it 'till the wheels fall off, so that might take a while:)

The headgasket is not a big problem in Europe. Im using gasoline 95 e5, and the carbon build up is very little. Cleaned the egr cooler at 180.000km. It wasnt really dirty.

Went through the blow head-gasket and tried replacing it but still had problems. Didn't have the time to mess with it so grabbed a JDM engine and it worked great. Combined with a clean EGR and a new water pump should be good for another 50k miles before I need to clean the EGR again. Very reliable car. Went I went over the old motor, found that the timing chain tensioner didn't extend and the timing chain jumped. :P Oh well, know for the future. Thanks for the review.

My prius sometimes makes a rattle on the passenger side of the vehicle on startup and medium acceleration. I checked some online forums that said the sound is most likely from some heat shield or bushing loose around the exhaust. Has anyone else experienced this or a similar issue and has had it resolved?

My first car was a 2004 Lexus RX 330 that I had for 13 years that was gifted to me by my grandmother. It was an awesome car. The only problem was it love to eat brakes my next car I purchased in January 2017 for $9000 a 2012 Toyota Priuswith 100,000 miles so far I’ve had this car seven years with no major issues even if it only lasts another year or two I can’t complain for what I paid for the car. I will definitely be looking into a 2019 or newer model Prius for my next car in the next year or two.

Great vid, do all of these problems show up on the scanner? I scanned mine, got no codes, car is at 150,000 kms with just oil and filter changes and battery fan servicing, drives great but a bit down on fuel economy. This car hasn't even had it's plugs changed yet, so wanted to ask what general maintenance items should I perform and how much should I depend on the scan tool for errors?

My car had mileage drop gradually out of nowhere (lost about 8 mpg in 2 months). One day, the check engine turned on. It turned out to be spark plugs (the leftmost one died). I would check there with a diagnosis tool first before actually doing the change, but changing all 4 spark plugs fixed my issue. (Not just the one, because if 1 is dead, the other 3 are going to die soon too). Good luck!

So, which year Prius is best to buy then?

A head gasket is about $45 and having just a tiny bit of the head machine is probably $150. I don’t know what a mechanic would charge to do it, but I’m guessing probably 800 bucks. Although I wouldn’t do it for that lol not very fun

Hi Drew, love your vids on the Prius. Just completed installing of a set of reconditioned battery modules on the 2012 Prius V. A few cuts and bruises but beyond that things went pretty smooth. For some reason the ABS Codes won't go away after reinstalling the battery pack in the car, they show up every time I run the scanner app. My second issue are the temps, is it normal for the battery pack temps to average 100F or so once they warm up? Other then those two issues the car is running well although with a modified cooling system tweak (0-ring removed from the overflow cap, suspect head gasket leak producing a p301 code in cylinder #1).

That’s a tough one. Not sure if they are “permanent” codes but if they are, the car has to see the issue corrected to make them go away, in short. As for the temps in the battery pack, I have not gone too far down that road yet. I don’t have much advice to give on it. I have most of the tools (chargers) and the basic idea, but I cannot find the time to dig into a battery. It’s just so much tedious work. and I never thought of relieving pressure at the overflow, but that makes sense! If you think you’ve got a head gasket leak, best to just do the head gasket. Before it damages anything else! Nice job on the cells

Head gasket ($2k+), EGR cooler, water pump, ABS system ($2k+), traction battery ($2k+) - all known issues!

My 2017 Prius has about 232,000 miles. I’m the first owner and just around late last year I start to get the “shake” at start up in the morning or when at a stop light and the engine decides to come on. Doesn’t happen all the time but it still happens regardless. I run heavy miles on my daily commute and I would be shocked if I stayed under 300,000 miles but the end of this year. Great car otherwise and I would definitely purchase onther one.

My 2015 Prius was nice until things started to break. At 121k the combo meter died, which resulted in a buzzing/electric whine in the interior when a key fob is detected. Been looking around and some people say bad 12v, which was just replaced with a Toyota one in February when this recent winter killed it. Other suggest bad inverter or just change dash, which is looking like a few thousand. Any tips?

I’d look into rebuilding your combo meter. I’ve done it ok 2gen. Super easy. Not sure on 3gen. Or order one with similar miles used and DIY. It’s not hard to get to The inverter should throw codes if it’s bad with drivability symptoms.

Needing a head gasket? Last 2010 I got was 201,000 with bad HG and a decent dent. $1500. For a perfect one, $2500 but if the head gasket symptoms were ignored, plan on a motor

This will also apply to the Prius v - up to 2017. Essentially a Gen.3 thanks for the video - I plan on keeping mine, and will replace that list of parts, for preventive maintenance. 120k now.

I have a 2010 Prius with 168K miles. My son was driving it and it died on the freeway. Codes 3190 and 3191. It also said "Check Hybrid System". I changed the fuel pump,the camshaft pos sensor and the crankshaft position sensor. When it tries to start the ICE it almost goes but then does the rattle. The coolant levels are a little bit down but they might have been already. (at or close to the "low" level) Dipstick has nice clean oil on it. Being that it won't start I'm guessing its either spark or fuel delivery? I never cleaned the EGR and am going to today. Could that be it? If it was a coil pack wouldn't it still run?Possibly head gasket? Any help would be appreciate. Thanks

Yikes. They could be a lot. Always to go the big 3: compression, fuel, spark. And don’t forget timing. The EGR shouldn’t literally kill it. And coil packs are 1 per cylinder so that should cause a misfire before it causes this. Check fuel and of course spark but also check timing

Just had to replace the brake booster on my 2011 ran me $2300. The owner who sold me the car was sent the the advisement and got scared and sold it to me not realizing this was going to be an issue with this car. That being said. This car has saved me so much money I still don’t regret buying it.

@@toplespecah666 goodness gracious that is an interesting question, and very ironic you would ask me, because we import cars from Japan as well as specialize in Prius. They are two completely different vehicles, and comparing them is impossible. Comparing a Prius to another hybrid like a Lexus CT 200 H is a little bit more practical, as a crown royal saloon is a luxury car and in the year 2009 was certainly not about efficiency. But, that said, as crown owners, I would say I love crown a little bit more than prius BUT as an occasional used vehicle for luxury purposes. Prius is better for commuting to work because of its efficiency and technology and smoothness and size for parking

Never had issues with a Prius change your oil on time and use synthetic. As long as you’re not flooring it pretending to be a Supra car will last .

13 Prius...car intermittently rattles at start...(if I put it quickly in neutral it massively alleviates the rattle and doesn't code). Anyway, the car has drank half the reservoir of coolant in 200 miles. BUT, there is NONE mixing with the oil, oil is CLEAN. Where is it going? I tried the putty knife thing and on the EGR and after the 5th test start it rattled...so that must mean EGR is good? My mechanic did a "block test" and said the motor and gasket "were good"--dont know what a block test means. I read somewhere regarding a 10-15 Prius that was drinking too much coolant and that they found a "misshaped Heater Core Line" and that is where the coolant was going. Please help on what I should do next!

I’m very sorry but watch all my prius vids. If you’re loosing lots of coolant and getting a death rattle in a third gen, that’s as likely a head gasket as pain in a foot that just stepped on a nail. Chance there is a coincidence but it’s a very, very, VERRY small Chance. Sadly it’s the head gasket. I hope it works out

@@Sk8StGeorge hey so very sadly, in the vast majority of cases with this engine in this type of failure, none of the coolant makes it into the oil. I have a video I posted recently about inside of a failed engine, and I show what happens to the head gasket. The failure is between the coolant jacket and the combustion chamber, so the coolant you are losing is going inside the engine where the gasoline and air combine are ignited by the spark plug, that’s how the coolant is disappearing but not going in the oil. That is also why you hear the sound in the morning Again it needs to be said that I have not torn apart your engine, but this is 100% classic Prius head failure all the symptoms pointing to this. Very sorry :-(

How many miles does this car have and next has all of the oil and filter changes using Synthetic oil been at 5,000 miles/ Don't forget to do a cylinder leakage test before you pull the head then you will know if its the piston rings the valves could be leaking and the BLOCK could also be warped?

I drive a 2010 Prius with around 243,000 miles. The car occasionally shutters, sometimes while accelerating, decelerating, or at a constant speed. What’s the problem?

I have felt that and I cannot say for sure what it is - it was in a unit that was CHUGGING oil. I had the thought it may be light misfires but I am It 100%

There is one available that had an engine replaced 190k miles, currently has 275k on the rest of the car. The owner has stated that the car consumes oil about a quart 500-1000k miles. I haven't looked into that, could be PCV or that the EGR hasn't been cleaned. If that turns out to be fine, how long would the transmission last if it has 275k? Do they need flushed?

So to give you an idea of how reliable the transmission, which really isn’t a transmission but a planetary year and two electric motors, you can find them as little as $100 on eBay, because there is a much greater supply (crashed cars, cars with bad engines, cars with too much rust) then there is demand. They are pretty much bulletproof. Unlike automatic transmissions, the fluid in these does not drive anything hydraulically, it just lubricates and cools. It is Toyota plain old world standard if I remember correctly, and it’s pretty easy to drain and fill. A generation three with a good engine is all I would care about, I don’t even think about the transmission in these cars. I have a customer that has multiple million miles over several Prius and never did a transmission

@@LupeGalvan-pu5hr You're welcome =) Toyota "bet" their entire future on that transmission (or at least 95% similar of it) in 1997 when they launched the prius. At the same time, America was ramping up v8 SUV sales. Yes the v8 suvs are successful, but look at toyota - nearly thier entire offering is hybrid. And they are GOOD.

Use lucas fuel system additive ev. Tank....no problems.

I've been hearing a ton of Prius owners having zero problems with their cars. I have the opportunity to purchase a 2012 Prius with 225K with a new upgraded head gasket, new engine water pump, and the engine has one year warranty. Sounds good but they are wanting $8k for it. Isn't that a crazy high price?

Well.. I’ve got a 2012 with 137 for $12230ish. These still are the best cars made from the year 2010 to 2015, but they aren’t as good as 2004-2009. Not sure if it’s worth $4000 to get 100,000 less miles. I bought my truck with 197,000 and enjoyed the savings. I got my solara convertible for $1500 with 190 and wish I spent $7,000 and got one with 80,000

I’ve only had 3 of them and they were perfect. As they age and I get more, I’ll absolutely do one of these videos. I almost grabbed a 2023 at auction but stopped at $38,000. On a used unit that was $36,000 new. Hard to justify the risk just to say I did it. Our dealership seems to do best with southern gen 2s. I’ve got a bunch of low mileage 2gens now. Hi Drew. You are the guy I was looking for help please. I really like the way you explain. So I have 2014 Prius 200k mil. It vibrates whole body on high speed even starts from 35-40 mph and when you push more acceleration doesn’t vibrates that much but when I try lower rpm does more vibrations. I did change Spyro plugs all suspension. Got brand new tires. Still does it. I would love to hear your opinion please

I am buying 2013 Prius - 125k - three owner - $8k what do you think? it needs door lock and headlights. what do I need to check?

That seems pretty reasonable! Just be sure it’s not using coolant. Ideally you’d see it cold… the issue usually comes around 200,000 anyway

2011 Prius… great vehicle, no problems except keeping having to replacing drivers side headlight. Have to replace key fob, before anything on car, besides brakes and tires.

Yea they are awesome. I’m around them a lot so I fail to always remember… how any cars are a joy to own at 200,000? Not many. I deal in almost all toyota honda so I forget that it’s not the norm sometimes. Please like and subscribe if you haven’t already :)

The 2015 is the only model in this gen where most of those issues were fixed

Do I go for a high milage (500k km= 310k mi) 3rd gen or a 210k mi 2nd gen? Price difference is about 1.5k dollras.

I hate to say it, given the choice between a second and a third, I am all about the second. I find the third to be more comfortable, and may be a little nicer to drive, but don’t forget, I look at thousands of condition reports per year because of my business, you very rarely see “dead” generation two please like and subscribe if you haven’t already :)

@@jeszenszkypeter9835what country are you in? We didn’t get that. We did get 50th anniversary camry hybrids back in 2007ish. They were pearl white with special wheels, illuminated door sills, and every option you can imagine. 2 per USA dealership was all they produced

buy one. best car ever. if you are not into the way the prius looks, look into the lexus ct200h. i own the lexus and owned the prius just great cars for the daily driver. the lexus gives you a nicer suspension...alot smoother since the struts are upgraded. I just changed out the struts at 240k miles because one just blew out. the rears were still about 20% life in them!!!! 247k miles and still going...i think i can get 600k out of this engine...maybe more.

Thanks again for the reply! That makes sense. Maybe I should just buy a JDM engine with 60k miles for $1000?

@@DrewGarage Yep, most of the JDM's I see have a 1 month or at least a guarantee start. Others offer 5 year parts and labor...but they are over $1k more. Hopefully last question: Any danger just driving this thing and refilling coolant for a while?

@@Sk8StGeorge the only danger of continuing to drive it the way it is is that eventually it will create enough of a leak that you will bend a rod, this should explain it Inside Look: Bad Head Gasket! 2010-15 Prius Morning Death Knock (Head Gasket) Cause/Solution kzread.info/dash/bejne/fqlhu6dykcXWnsY.html There is also an inherent danger of any catastrophic engine failure, based based on where you are. So you are on an interstate in a busy area going through the middle of a city… But other than that, it won’t hurt anything other than the engine. I suppose it is not impossible that the force of the electric motor trying to crank over a locked engine could damage the transmission side, but I highly doubt it

@@lilmsgs that means a lot to me, thank you! I love the second GEN. I have like five of them right now, and I have hope that the American supply will not be depleted (within reason) before 2028, when it is finally legal to import them from Japan. I believe they do not have the coolant storage thermos, and obviously the dashboard is a little bit rearranged… The power button is still on the right side of the steering wheel, but the steering wheel is on the right. The multi function displays in Japanese, but most people don’t use it anyways. So assuming people can get over right hand drive, I will continue to have these for decades! The generation three is lovely, and will take its place in the garage is and hearts of Manny , but personally, I will always love the generation two

If you hear the rattle, most of the time there isn't anything wrong. If you start the engine and shut it off within a minute , the engine wets the spark plugs.

But I used half the coolant reservoir in 200 miles. Intermittent rattling. Pulling the dipstick and looking under the oil cap, there is NO coolant contamination. Where is the coolant going?? No obvious leaks under the car, either.

We hate Prius and we got one! ❤❤❤

Head gaskets are not the problem.

Lol notorious 😂 it make it seen like this is the # 1001 he has done I have 3 not one or 2 3 at home daughters wife and mines the one I gave my daughter 2010 over 300k no a hick up but new batteries 2500 problem solve and hers is giving better gas mileage because the battery replacement is way better then toyotasl.

I have a different perspective, owning a car dealership and seeing thousands of them and being able to compare to second gens. Definitely a lesser car but still great
