Really good stuff. The part at the end about the start up solved a mystery for me. When changing the oil, I would only start it after it cooled down just long enough to get it up the ramps. Then after the oil change it would shake like mad. But only after the oil change. Thanks for the startup cycle tip!

change the oil while the engine is warm. The old oil will flow out better and you don't get the rattle

I’ve not had a problem with mine. 290k now 5w30 super tech full synthetic every 5k. Oil filter change every 10k. No noticeable use between changes. The catch can mod I think really helps things out. I’m glad that you found it helpful. The car is on a Mr Prius lithium battery pack now. The packs were fine I just wanted the piece of mind as this is my daily and long haul trucker to Nola and back. The 14 hour road trip had me wanting that piece of mind. I read how to test the cells and all that but by that point I’d rather not think and replace all. Mileage is similar if not a little better on lithium. 42-45 now. It had been slowly going up since install it will go up more. I think having the inverter recall done killed mileage. My friend with the same year didn’t get the recall done and it fried his inverted which Toyota replaced for free. At this point there are newer hybrids that do better but this beater Prius is nice for many reasons and I’ll keep taking care of and fixing it for a while to come.

headgasketproblems can mostly be avoided by changing the waterpump BEFORE it throws codes, and regularly cleaning your EGR and intakemanifold. It's not difficult, just a lot of work. But it can save you lots and lots of money. Many people don't know that and the dealership doesn't want you to know. But because of people like mega catares people who are interested in keeping their car as long as possible and getting high milege on it you can avoid most very expensive problems. I own a Toyota Auris Hybrid 2, which is basically a Corolla with a different name, with the same drivetrain as the Prius 2010-2016 and it runs like a clock, because I take care of it by changing oil every 10k km's and cleaning the manifold and EGR. And also: drive conservatively, saves the engine and gas. Thanks from Holland, Europe

Yes you are correct. I used oven cleaner to clean my EGR. I appreciate your input. I wish these cars had a temp gauge or better warning factory for the water pump failure. I'll just change it with oem every 90k miles. Take care!

I bled my brakes with fresh dot 3 a couple of months ago. Does it help I don’t know. I would assume fresh fluid wound not hurt. There was a KZread on getting the abs pump to work for the rear and the front follow a normal bleed procedure. My brake performance improved a ton. The fluid wasn’t even that bad I’m assuming some water got in and who knows how old it was at 280k miles.

After digging through Prius forums I've read it's advised to change your spark plugs and water pump at 120k miles so you don't blow your head gasket. Buying a gen 3 Prius with high mileage usually the previous owners or owner haven't done that. My Prius is only at 72k miles and it's 10 years old. My engine Shaked only once a month ago, and my coolant hasn't gone down, so I'm hoping the shaking was because of a clogged egr or intake ports.

  • @Megacatares

The water pump is really easy to do it's 4 bolts and a hose if I remember correctly. If you are wondering when it was last done I say why not do it. Try to use oem pink/orange fluid for coolant. For engine shaking on cold start it could be, if you start the car up to say move it out of it's spot to another and don't let the car finish it's warm-up procedure vapor in the intake manifold does not get burned off or something and that will cause shaking on a restart. If you are moving it, let the engine shut off by itself before getting out of the car so it completes its cycle. I did the spark plugs when I did the head gasket along with the fuel injectors. I got 'oem' ones off ebay that were rebuilt, well that was a lie. The car was knocking from those when the engine restarted. I put the old injectors back in. I did this just because I was in there. Long story short I got another real set of used oem injectors on ebay, had the seller send them to injector RX in dover Texas had them rebuilt and then installed them. No more shaking.

When you did the hg ...did you detach the exhaust manifold from the 2 spring bolts, or from the 5 at the exhaust port?

  • @Megacatares

5 off the cylinder head. You need to remove the manifold to get resurfaced at a machine shop. Please don't just slap a new gasket on there without getting it resurfaced. It's a lot of work to have to do all over again. Also get new head bolts they are torque to yield.

I can try to make one but honestly I don’t want to remove my intake manifold again. Send me a message and I’ll share with you what I all got. What I did was run the pc line to the Napa hose. Just cut it and jb weld it inside the Napa hose. Yea I know people will say how ratchet. It’s been 60k miles and it’s solid. Then run that Napa hose to the 20 dollar eBay catch can. Then run a Napa hose from that catch can to the inlet pcv valve pickup on the intake manifold. Again I just jbwelded the hose inside the Napa hose. You could run brass reducers from Lowe’s or something or the sort for a more professional fix but my setup has been solid for me.

Not that I know of. 2016 they changed up the engine and that is said to take care of the head gasket issue. There’s a variety of reasons for the head gasket issue: clogged egr system and ignoring it, not changing water pump on time, just higher miles and it being something that happens. Mine has been fine since I did this repair for 60k miles or so. People put high demands on Toyota I didn’t have any issues till 224,000 miles. That’s a lot of miles and many years of good running.

Car has 282k now. It needed a head gasket and a egr cleaning at 224k or so. It's been fine ever since. I bought bad wheel bearings the first time around. That's about it. It's a great car.
