Hey at least you tried it, and now you have a class A license and experience. I definitely understand where you are coming from, I would 100% rather make less money and be happier rather than make more and be miserable every day. People give me shit for working at Dominos for 12 years but I love it and I am living comfortably haha

Much respect for doing what you love doing. I'm certifying in cybersecurity because I love tech, but am starting to see myself not enjoying the classes leading into graduating. It was never about making $50-60 an hour, but keeping people's digital information secure. I wanna do trucking for the reason of the nation being in a shortage of truckers and businesses need their supplies and gas stations their fuel. Neither for me are about the money, but about my own principles. And I appreciate you for sticking to yours. Which is something lost on a lot of society today.

Had a friend who did fulltime trucking for a good 3+ years. He was married and had 4 young kids at the time. He drove across the states and was on the road weeks at a time. His biggest issue was loneliness. He said being alone for so long drove him crazy. He listened to all kinds of different types of audio cds (this was pre pod casts). He still drives to this day but does so locally. My thoughts are, it's a good career if you don't have kids and plan to start a family. That way you can be more financially prepared. Whereas, having kids and being away from them for that long would be devastating. Hang in there brother. Looking forward to see what's next.

My neighbour she is a tomboy women that went back to school to get her licence. She got her licence from the best school around the CTR and since then she got hired by a big company to do big long canada us trips ... she is home 3-4 days a month. Seriously the light are off there 99% of the time. We don't see her anymore. I didn't see her car for like 2 months... she just dissapeared. Wathever she is doing I hope she stack the money to come back and live a better life because she is gone. Before that she was home each and every day....

This is a good video. i'm glad i'm not the only one who's feeling like this. I want to quit trucking too, but i have nothing to fall back on, and i can't really afford to go back to school because right now even at the age of 24 i made some stupid decisions when it came to spending money and it kind of got me in a hole. so i'm slowly digging myself out and paying down bills. And for me trucking is the only thing that pays better right now. i can't find anything that pays better than trucking. its hard bro.

Im in the same exact boat. I made $2800 a week for 2 years straight working 6 days a week in trucking. I paid off all my debt and learned what it was like to trade all my time for money. Trucking has been a blessing but has absolutely changed my views on my priorities. Money isnt everything and im not willing to trade all my time for it anymore. We lost the contract and now im working the same amount for less than half the pay. Going through tough times mentally and want to figure out what the hell i want to do next. Thinking about buying a truck and running local freight. Work when i feel like it just not all the damn time. Ive saved up a lot of money and have really good money management skills. Im not trying to get rich but just looking to make more money for my time. Make $1600 and work 4 days sounds great if definitely take that gig. Monday thru thursday 6am to 6pm...guess ill keep dreaming.

That is a lot of money man! It's draining, but rewarding, right? Hard to explain until you try it for yourself (beware). That's what I said.. Money is great and all, but when you are giving up your full days for it, what is the fun in that? If you buy a truck, get a sleeper for local. I'm not trying to get crazy rich either, just set myself up for security purposes. It's all about financial literacy. If you don't know what to do with the money or have a plan for it when it comes in, you'll blow through it all..Dude, your dream sounds like mine!!! I drive 6am-6pm and want 3 days off lol. Best of luck to ya

That Roehl contract is ridiculous because they sort of force you to stay with them for a minimum of 15 months and if you fail their CDL program or quit before ranking up 120k miles or 15 months, they will try to slam you with the $7k+ interest balance to pay back… I notice a lot of these OTR trucking companies are doing this scam. Its definitely not “free” but I guess you learn, gain some experience and have your CDL though.

I did OTR for a while and it's not sustainable over years, it kills your personal life and your health.

Been watching your videos for some time. I am 56 and been in the transportation industry for 35 years, so hope my 2 cents helps. If there is 1 thing certain in life its that every individual is different. For decades the biggest complaint in trucking of course has been home time. Numerous friends/peers of mine over the years have changed jobs due to TIME, including myself. 1 thing to remember is that you do have a choice. You chose to work/start with Roehl. You have been committed and remain that way to fulfill your obligation for the training. Cant recall if you have completed the terms of agreement for the GYCDL but if you have, stop right now and get out of there. It might not feel this way, but every day you continue to drive makes that piece of plastic in your wallet much more valuable. What did I do when i felt this way? I went to work for Pepsico years ago to be near home. Day cab delivery but at least I was home made decent money and also increased my experience level. Thousands of Drivers over the years have been trained by mega carriers and thousands of drivers over the years have left. Its the cycle they use. Dont feel guilty just run.... In a few years once you find the right fit you, as we all have, will laugh at the early days of driving.

Former Roehl driver here. I started at Roehl in Jan 2022, drove company for about 8-9 months, tried the lease op program for about another year. I turned in my truck in Oct 23, went back to my old job. Mid $40’s per hr, work OT or door dash for extra money, home every night for the wife and kids. Haven’t driven in about 6 months now. I had thought I might try UPS semi driver or something like that to use my CDL, but so far haven’t. I get what you are saying. In the beginning it’s like this new exciting challenge. Then once you get all the driving, backing, parking down, it’s just logging miles and you start to key in on the things that are not so good. Trucking is definitely a lifestyle, but like my wife says…show me these truck drivers with all this money and nice houses. Then I look around and think maybe she’s right. Also trucking is on a down cycle right now. Maybe the industry as a whole gets better in a year or two, hard to say. I tried it, and walked away for now. Might get back into it at some point in the future. Good luck to you.

Don't do UPS, they'll run you into the ground. I'm going to try for amazon because they offer 3 days off for their truck drivers. All the truckers have to show for their time in the industry is a n unhealthy lifestyle (not all of them). Yeah, I hear ya. Not in a rush to go back to be honest.

I left the industry in 2002 but kept my CDL for a over a decade after leaving. The trucking industry has declined with compensation not keeping pace with inflation, stricter regulations plus an overall lack of professionalism due to poor training. My brother is still driving and is making only $5 more per hour then what I did back in 1995! My advice for anyone who leaves the industry is to find something that parallels to it such as logistic, waste or hazardous material management. Use the skills that you learned while in the industry and apply them to further your career.

It was extremely stressful with my relationships with them due to no time with them. The amt of time on the road compared to pay was not worth it ( almost 70k wasn't worth it what i made per yr). I'm now a local driver and even then it's not good pay. The trucking industry isn't the same. Not worth it.

Got terminated from Walmart for missing days cause of COVID, come to find out on my last day COVID isn't auto guaranteed in their medical anymore, and I didn't have enough PPTO to cover it. I was already planning on leaving them anyway once I get my cybersecurity cert in June. I am still doing it, because it was paid in full. The more I do my classes, the more I realize it might not be for me. I always enjoyed going in the truck to Mobile AL with my late dad as a kid, when he had a short overnight run. My BIL is also a trucker. They both love it. I'm seeing more of myself in my daddy because I love driving and enjoy helping others (we are in a shortage of truckers so if I do get into trucking, it'll help businesses get their inventories). If I, like you, see myself not liking it, I can always get an accompanying certification with my base one and get into the field I saw myself doing mid-way through last year. I also hate drivers. It isn't just truckers they treat like shit, it is every other normal car on the road. But I make peace with the fact some idiot will make me yell in my Suburban at them. I then take a sip of coffee, a puff of my vape and let SiriusXM zone my mind back on the road. And the truckers also suck, cause I can be in mom's Niro and they will ride my ass until they decide to go around me. But I've made peace with the fact every single driver, car or trucker can be an entitled prick to their fellow people on the highway and am working on my 0-100 I have with my patience and low tolerance for BS. Do what makes you happy sir and thank you for the perspective from someone who's in the industry.

At just 45 hrs a week I was taking home more then I did with Rick Roehl's truck. Don't get me wrong it was enjoyable but I like to be payed appropriately for me time.

Also what got to me was the down time like you said waiting to be loaded and waiting to be unloaded and cause I was on flatbed I had to throw straps which they didn't pay to strap the load down. They payed to tarp the load be for the amount of time tarping took it wasn't worth it. That said if the load was a partial tarp load where two skids required tarping I would sometimes not even tarp it if the weather was good that day. And can't forget the fuel stops that you don't get payed for either so I quit playing the 50 gallon fuel stops and just let it go til it clicked. I was not going to fill up more then once a day. I figured on a daily bases I was probably putting in about 2 hours on duty time and not driving which I didn't get payed for.

How many miles do you get a week, I currently work for knight and I do get 3000 average weekly, I don’t care for home time I’m the type of person who stays for months straight I don’t have family, knight is a really good company and at first pay was enough for me but as I get more experience pay is good but I know I could make more

I can’t knock them, some good, some bad. I’m dedicated dry van, average 2400 miles/week, .60cpm, home every week, some cool FM’s. Cons: heavy loads, some broker loads, detention is crap, planners send you wherever, cameras and sensors on truck that make driving stressful, governed trucks.

Grass isn’t always greener Gerb. You’re young, single, no kids. I would use this time wisely and make as much money as you can and call it quits further down the line. You only get one chance before you get married and have kids. Gets harder to find good fit jobs when you have kids. I am one of the fortunate ones who can make a living and see my son every morning he wakes up and every night he goes to bed.

I did that for 11 years. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Like with any job, it’s great and fun in the beginning but will eventually KILL your passion for the automotive world. Once you turn a hobby that you love in to WORK, you end up not loving that hobby anymore. That’s not the case for every person in sure, just putting it out there.
