Your videos on specific camera use made me stop looking into top of the line cameras, but stay with (cheaper) models that fit my use, which is family snapshots. May not have been your original goal but I am grateful for it!

Thanks, have been looking forward to this review. I have a GFX100S and a similar perspective to the GFX100SII. Now I can rest assured that I am not missing something. And FYI, I have set up the GFX100S on a copy stand to archive old 35mm slides like a contact sheet. Your alert to the new Fuji tether app has been a great help. thanks again.

I would love to know more about using this for slide repro*. I left photography before the digital era came and my beloved Kodachrome 64's have held up amazingly well. I want to enter the digital era going big and being able to bring my slides into the present would be a bonus use of this camera. *I immediately started looking into it. Thank you so much for bringing this benefit to my attention.

I would say the big change is gonna be the focusing and that's the idea of this model is it's not about anything else really it's about improving the auto focus which from my understanding it will definitely improve over the hundred. I actually owned the 50s ii and I love that camera for a lot of my landscape work, but I do want a camera that can focus better. The GFX files are incredible. They are so beautiful and when you open them up on your screen you just cannot believe how amazing they are. I'm definitely interested in the new model because of the auto focus. I can then use it for some portrait work. The previous models are very slow. I shoot weddings as well and definitely the new model you could shoot a wedding with quite comfortable

That's what I've seen too in the many reviews I've read and watched: autofocus and especially autofocus tracking, so now wildlife photographers can use it along with the new 500mm lens and/or the Canon EF 100-400 II with an adapter, or other Canon EF adapted teles. The 100S is mostly only good for stills. Portrait and sports photographers would also be interested in this huge improvement, making it similar to the 100 II in this regard.

Yes - the AF does seem improved... This is the one reason I tried to be very clear about the range of what I was actually comparing, and the photography types I do. For nature/portrait/sports - find a reviewer who does such work ;-)

I'm kinda hyped that used prices for the 100s are roughly the same as the latest pro full frame. It's been a real treat being able to use a "flagship" niche system for my work. I'll have to send along your review to the people who bug me about all the drawbacks 😅. I keep trying to tell people "if you know, you know" when it comes to this stuff. The one thing I can't seem to convince my peers about is the g1/g2 GFX100 bodies are still using the same sensor and have very little technical difference... but trying to talk people out of spec war stuff is always difficult :D. The other thing is that high speed mode drops the readout to 12bit, and I'm not convinced the "medium format look" vs getting similar quality from an R5/A7R/etc.

Thank you Keith for doing the comparison. I own a 100s and I agree that it is not worth switching to the mark IIs. May be the following body could me make me think about it. And you are correct: it is a matter of doubling the megapixel size as the minimum to considere changing a body. The cost of selling a 100s to get a 100sII is not cheap. Really, the autofocus improvement and the evf does not justify the change. People who have chosen the GFx 100s are more tripod and manual shooters that viceversa. As of me, I shoot landscape and architecture and it makes more sense to wait for the 30 mm f5.6 TS lens than to going for the 100sII. When you say “pixel sift cluncky” are you referring to the 400 mega pixel enlargement?

Great real world points you make in your review. I’ve just bought into the GFX system, specifically the new 100 S ii. Why? Because it was cheaper than buying the old version. What? Truly, it was cheaper. Because I’d made the decision to buy, after a lot of research, the only three G mount lenses I reckon I’ll ever need along with the body, the lens discounts that Fuji was offering two weeks ago (they’re now back to full price) along with the £300 per lens discount when bought with the body, PLUS Park Cameras giving me a 10% discount on the GFX 100S ii AND throwing in both macro tubes - worth £578 - then the final invoice, including deducting £90 worth of Park “points” came to £8547. So that’s the brand new GFX 100 S ii body, 50mm f3.5, 20-35mm zoom, and the 110mm portrait lens, two extension tubes and 10% off the body itself. Had I bought the mk i version for £3500, then, including the lenses etc the total would have been £9115. I’ve just had to fork out about £80 for two lens adapters for my vintage glass, which leaves me spoilt for choice. Normally I tend to miss out on bargains, this time I’ve been lucky. Thought you’d find that interesting.

Keith, photographers who swapped the GFX 100s for the GFX 100s2 say the 100s2 runs out of battery faster. It seems to them that the processor consumes more current. But I checked the characteristics of both batteries, and it turned out that the GFX 100s batteries have more VA.

You touch on field cameras quickly here. Do you have a video on when to start shooting with a field camera-advantages and disadvantages? Your page is extremely helpful in my decision-making. I am weighing Cambo vs. tilt-shift for Z9 or going medium format…it is a lot to think about and need a foundation of guidance. Thank you so much!

Personally, I'd need some very specific uses [high end product photography] before I'd even consider buying or using such kit. The only reason I've no videos is that no-one has lent me any such kit to look at! Why Z9? Hardly a camera I'd associate with such lenses. Nikon T/S lenses [apart from 19mm] are very out of date - and the narrow F mount GFX100S works well, then again so does my old 5DS Given the cost of such stuff, my first question is just what do you want to do with it?

I am doing watch photography and shoot with X-H2. Laowa 65mm lens. Now I am seeing good offer locally for GFX100 and it makes me wonder how much this camera could be a serious upgrade. I do focus stacking on watches. Often I feel that details could be better.

I don't know any of the small Fujifilm cameras - I see it is 40MP? Assuming you allow for the bigger sensor by shooting further away or with a longer focal length, the quality should be seriously better. Dynamic range and bit depth are better with the 100. The other thing to consider is lenses - the small sensor of the xh2 only uses the centre of the lens image circle. I use the GFX100S with a stackshot and Helicon Focus for stacking. A variety of lenses, but an adapted Canon TS-E90 is pretty good.

@@KeithCooper Thank you for your reply. I have some videos on my channel taken sometimes almost at 1:1 magnification, check them out :) One thing I haven’t actually tested is pixel shift. That gives me 120mpx image. Maybe that would help with details. Of course, doesn’t work for video. Got to make some research.

I think if I ever dip my toes in Fujifilm's medium format it will be via the second hand market. Not just to save money but to ensure it's a system I would use enough to justify it. I generally shoot events so mostly people doing stuff. AF and frames per second are important to my shooting style but of course quite often people are more or less stationary. Capturing them in 100MP 16bit medium format would certainly give me a beautiful image to work with 😊

I asked you about cyanotype a while ago. I didn't actually do this, but the process includes "make a good photo, process it in Photoshop. Apply this adjustment curve." Then print on a particular transparency film, contact print to custom paper hand coated with Magic Chemicals." A couple of the lecturers had hours of fun calibrating the adjustment curve. The particular transfilm seems to not be on the market any more, so they will have to do it again. I think is should be possible for you to make a set of adjustment curves to correct vignetting from your TS lenses. As of about March 2024 Ps has presets, they apply a set of adjustment layers to your image. I imagine loading all your curves adjustment layers into a preset, and when you apply, chose those that make the best result.

Ah, such masked curves might work well if I only ever used shift at a particular amount and direction and aperture ...but I don't ;-) That's before I even consider if I want a particular aberration correcting.

I am happy to have found this channel through the podcast episode you had with Tin House studio. I was wondering if you would help me out with some recommendations? I am currently using a Canon full frame (RF mount) system and I have recently been fortunate enough to acquire a cambo system second hand for an extraordinary price (with a 100 mm schneider symmar optics, copal-0 shutter). I work as a product development engineer, where I sometimes have been asked to take images of our products on site, where I am considering using the cambo to be able to use tilt/shift. I might want to change to a gfx system down the line, with that in mind, do you have any recommendations for lenses that are large enough to bring a suitable amount of shift, even if I switch to the gfx system? I would ideally like a series of lenses so I could cover both architecture and landscape (for my past time activity), but I find it difficult to find a lens system that is large format and can go really wide too. Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to explore your content even further! Cheers!

Thanks! I'm just testing the Canon TS-E50 on the GFX and from a quality POV it's up there with the Fujifilm 30mm TS - oh and it's f/2.8 The TS-E 24 II is workable on the GFX too. The TS-E17 is OK but needs a lot of care with focus For other lenses, you're right, getting short focal lengths is not easy. The shortest [old] MF lens I've got is an M645 35mm and it shows its age. The mamiya 55 and 80 are great on the GFX, but long - image circles give a modest shift. Very enjoyable video. How much coverage do the Canon tilt and shift lenses actually provide? How much shift do you get? Or is the coverage just enough to use these lenses as "normal" ones.

Full coverage with full shift - the TS-E50 is particularly good. 33x44 is not that much bigger than 24x36 The worst case is diagonal shift where one corner gets much closer to the edge of the image circle. A degree of vignetting and detail softness is visible, but very usable still. I'll be returning to this in an article and likely a video to supplement it

Not sure when I will get a 2nd hand GFX100S. The problem is the cost of lenses. I also in the process of learning to use my D850 and D800E for woodland photo. Still looking for a 15mmF2.8 lens. And I need to sort out what PS or equivalent I will use in the future. My reason for getting a GFX 100s is the cropping to HP pan Format without loosing to much pixel and to reuse my old MF lenses with adapters. I will use 24mm, 45mm and 85mm PC lenses on my Nikon cameras put I will not get the 19mm PC lens due to the cost and I don't earn money on my photography.

I’m Long time Canon apc-s and apc-h shooter here. Been looking at something more landscape orientated and would like your comment on IQ of a well scanned 6x9 etc vs these “cropped medium format” sensors at 100mpx . Other than ease of use etc. I assume the digital sensor outperforms film slightly in DR, but you will get more rez from the film? Hard to guess.

At 6x9 with a good scanner [wet mount drum], competent scanner operator, optimal conditions, fine grain film and excellent lens - yes likely somewhat more resolution [note - it's been a while since I last scanned such film]. Not cheap or easy to use I'm minded to suggest, beyond some studio work [where you'd likely go large sensor digital anyway] From my POV, for usability and IQ together, the GFX100 sensor wins every time. Image stabilisation and modern raw processing software mean I can get really good results from 100MP hand held [if need be].

Someone is sure to say that I have Too Many Cameras. Seven do pixel shift high (4x) resolution in camera. All of them, I think, could do it better. I do't usually want the high res done immediately, it takes too long. Panasonic can make a timelapse video, for example, but I have the options to defer it until later, or don't do it at all. I don't do it at all in camera, I do it on my PC. I would like the same options with high resolution, a special utility could do in on the PC, while importing and storing the images somewhere sensible. My Lumix cameras also retain the first raw file from the set.

For my paying work, currently that's still a job for my 5Ds and MP-E65 - partly due to the much better tethering and focus stacking hardware I have. However I have some other lenses to test specifically for MF and 'super macro' [10x to 50x] This is an area I'm hoping to return to over the next few months.

Dear Keith, I really like your videos and I appreciate what you're doing. I learned a lot on printing and many other things. But please come to the point in your videos, sometimes it's really challenging to follow your thoughts, you're turning around and loose the path, it's difficult to follow you all the minutes.

Fair enough, some are definitely more succinct ;-) This was a tricky one since from my POV, there is little practical difference between the two cameras and I want to avoid some of the typical YT camera review hyperbole. I quite dislike a lot of camera related stuff I see on YT - too much black and white opinion rather than actually saying 'it depends'. People wanting me to tell them what to do/think/buy are always going to be disappointed ;-) Someone recently observed that if the channel gets bigger, I might even have to consider doing some scripts rather than the half dozen bullet points I work from :-)

Sorry but this video is too long and too drawn out. Most of us have full time jobs

Fair enough, but I'm unlikely to be changing anything significantly I'm afraid. There will always be a mix of lengths depending on the complexity of the subject. One of reasons I don't do 'Shorts' and phone oriented stuff - I don't produce content made for easy consumption on the go... ;-) This was a trickier one to do for me.
