When you're climbing outside you don't have the luxury of colored holds telling you where you're hands go. It's one of the reasons gym climbers sometimes have issues transitioning to outside climbing. One nice thing about the gym I climb at is they have textured feature walls where the panels have simulated natural texture molded in. If you study and test it you can find things to hang onto other than just the bolted on holds. Watch the end of this route and you'll see me make three consecutive hand moves on the feature wall which helps me set up my balance before grabbing the last sidepull and make my move over to the final hold.
