Things to not do when washing your bike

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I have collected a number of Top Tips about what you shouldn't do when cleaning your bike. Are they right? Do you have any other things that I shouldn't be doing? Maybe some tips on what I should do, other than giving up making dull videos on KZread. Anyway, hope it is actually useful and thanks for reading this far.

Been using a pressure washer on my zx6r for 5 years with zero problems - I set it to the lowest pressure for the radiator and around the engine

Sponges are a big no no if you want to avoid scratches. Car detailers go through several stages before doing a contact wash. Start with citrus pre wash, the snow foam either from a pressure washer or IK sprayer then shampoo with a decent micro fibre mitt.

yes i agree, if i do use cloths i use microfibre ones or a mitt, the only time i ever use a sponge is on the car wheels, never the bike, and if you take care pressure washing it can make the job so much easier and quicker

about 2 hrs ago i cleaned my bike using a jetwasher with clear water first, then snow foam, using a bucket & grit catcher ring to get more stubbon bits off. IMHO if you dont crank the pressure up too much & take care i think it's ok to jetwash it, and i can't see any detrimental effects on my bike, plus it's easier for myself with my bad back, quicker and more fun, but i take the point about getting the washer out and ready can be a bit of a PIA which can negate any time saved i suppose. i dry the bike off, and a quick spray of sillicone shine and the jobs a good un. (there a bit of pre-requisite oiling and greasing of course). thanks for the vid and i'll take note of covering the exhaust, good advice. btw i use acf 50 but not every time, it seems to last for ages, and i dont ride much in bad weather or clean every day, but hey ho, works for me & i aint got any rust and the bike still looks good. Well on the jet wash, using a garden pressure washer is indeed a bad idea, something like the muc-off unit with a lower nozzle pressure is better, but still care is needed 😊

    I win't use a jet-wash on my bike. I use the two-bucket system. I also use a warm-air-dryer afterwards which helps enormously.

I'm told that the salts in washing up liquid aren't the same type of salt that causes corrosion. It will take off wax though. For me, during winter, it's plastic bags over the wheels and brakes and then a good spray of ACF50. I don't then bother washing it again and I've never had an issue. The only time I've had any rust is when I've hit the salt without ACF50. Ended up sandblasting and repainting the torque link on my Z1000.

Thanks Mark, another great vid ! Cleaning bikes has become a chore in the winter, but as you say a quick rinse down with cold water daily gets it through to the weekend, when you can get it cleaned, and re-protected properly. With the ACF50 i find that spraying the stuff directly onto the bike just wastes it. I put it about 50:50 in an open jar with GT85. Mix it well and after a few days it turns into a neat gel, that i brush all over the areas needed. I find this is easier to remove when it comes to the spring clean time. There are few matt paint dressings available, one of which i tried and it attacked the matt paint on my RS. It was from Dr. Exhaust, and i had a long and heated correspondence with them over this, until they finally gave in and admitted that it isn't suitable for "some types" !! of matt finishes. I got a refund and £50 voucher off their products....Personally i think its just window cleaner in a fancy container. Another product i would not recommend is the Muc-off snow foam. It played havoc with my electrics on both my bikes and blocked up the fuel breather, causing water to get into the fuel, and has a corrosive effect on some anodised surfaces. Yes, i used it correctly, in the shade on a cool day and rinsed off properly in good time.. I used it on a low pressure hand pumped foamer (which i thought was good idea at the time!!). I'm not knocking muc-off products either, as i use their nano cleaner regularly.. Shiny paint like my tank i have been using Miracle shine or an Auto Glym polymer wax, which works well. For the satin and matt plastic and metals i use a Symoniz tyre and plastic treatment. But only apply on a clean rag, as it has silicone in it, so not the best to spray around a bike if you dont want it getting into the wrong places.. Last tip!! Get yourself a grit screen in the bottom of your bucket, makes a huge difference over time, Thanks again

Made the mistake of using a foam cannon - Nick from Tutoro told me that prolonged use of foam canons, even with car shampoos, will cause elastomers to swell. So, be careful what you use if you're looking at foaming your bike with traffic film remover. Shameless plug for my mate for keeping your chain oiled - Tutoro - made down the road from me at Lydney Harbour. Have had the auto oiler for 10 years and still working well. Got it fitted on my R1 and Fazer Thou. But yeah, Nick had to machine the reservoir cap back a few microns due to swelling! Otherwise the reservoir would have cracked, rendering the unit useless. Personally, I use a pressure washer on the chassis parts and fairings, albeit from a distance, where it feels like an ocean spray. Blasting it at your wheel bearings from a foot away is a definite no-no, for the obvious reasons. I have marks on my hands when I accidentally waved my Karcher K4 lance at a body panel when i was removing a stubborn stain - a nice clean cut. And i was dumb enough to do it twice!!! But yeah, the foam lance thing is one to watch, especially around things like carb rubbers, hoses and seals.

Yeah pretty much all of this advice is incorrect and will yield poor results and potentially damage the paintwork. 1. Wheels: Use a dedicated wheel cleaner (Non-Acid based) to clean the rims and tyre side walls 2. Pre-wash: Use something like Bilt Hambers Auto-Foam or Touchless , let it well for 5-10 mins on the bike then wash it off 3. Contact wash: Only AFTER a prewash should you come into contact with the paint work; use a 2 bucket method and shampoo like Bilt Hambers Auto Wash which is just a pure shampoo 4. Drying: Dry the bike using drying towels , a leaf blower or dedicated vehicle dryer. 5. Polish: If you have a gloss lacquer over your paintwork, then you can either hand polish or machine polish the tank/bodywork. Autoglym Super Resin polish has been a staple for many years and is easy to use by hand for a beginner. 6. Protect: This is where you can use a wax or ceramic coating - but in this case , you don't use them on matt paint - unless yeah you want your matt paint shiny lol You can use a power washer, just at a low pressure and dont blast it directly at sensitive areas like wheel bearings, electrical switch gears. There's obviously more to it but these are the basics. For the love of god don't use washing up liquid 😂

I bought a new bike in 2022. I used all my self restraint and coated it in XCP Rust Blocker before taking it on its first ride (I used to use ACF on previous bikes but with limited success). My washing regime has been to spray the bike with Muc Off, wash off with a wax free bike shampoo and reapply the XCP once dry (I buff it spring, summer and autumn but leave it on thick in winter). The bikes only two years old and I avoid the salt so probably too soon to tell but the finish is still excellent.

I would never use a wash and wax on my entire motorcycle .. I dont want wax on my breaks, wheels, screen , handlebars, footpegs and exhaust since it gets hot.. I use a natural car wash soap and if I need to strip the wax off I use a wax remover, then when the bike are all clean and dry I put on wax or coating manually .. yes it takes longer and more steps but I also do consider myself a bit of a detailer when it comes to my bike This is my winter storage video (it is in danish but you can see the steps) kzread.info/dash/bejne/omuesKmHn7yxYLA.html&ab_channel=OneOfTheNobodies

Good reminder video. I just got a newish Ural Gear Up for winter and bad weather riding around Washington, DC and you're not kidding about that salt. It's a big crust that builds up real fast. I usually wash my summer ride (Honda Valkyrie) with just a garden hose and dish soap but I'll look for some car soap instead. Instead of a dryer with a vacuum, why not use a wet/dry vacuum around the switch gear to pull water out? Cheers from America!

Yo mark nice to see another vid again! When you said washing up liquid I knew what we were dealing with lol. OK so being in the automotive paint industry for over 30 odd years I've worked on all types on finish and had to deal with all sorts of matt and gloss too boot. I dont think that guy was on about T cut as such but any type of constant rubbing on matt or semi matt finish will start to gloss it after a while and you can buy specific matt finish enhancers and cleaners. Rather than a gloss wax. But on a basic gloss heres what I use. I'll start buy agitated flick over the dirt with warm or hot water using my karcher 0c3 mini jet wash ( this isn't a powerful jet wash more like the jet off your hose but allows you to use hot water in the container). Then I'll use a microfiber wash mitt for the tank and side panels and a sponge and brushes using Maguires ultimate wash shampoo. Then hose it down with the kacher OC3 again. Then I'll semi dry it with Maguires thick drying towls for the tank and gloss bits (these are purpose made drying towls for car detail). Then I'll finish off with the warm air of the Bruhl 1900+ dryer wich is one of the best tools I've brought. Same goes for the mini karcher 0C3. When you buy cheaper cleaning products like demon shine there's no after wax coating where as some of the more expencive ones leave a slight wax content after use. For cheapness you coukd even go zipwax by turtle wax wash too. But the Maguires is good.

@bikerevz I've had my little charge up jetwash for a while now I use it for everything portable like the mountain bike too. And I have to say I brought that drier a week after I brought the mt09 and I've never looked back its brilliant. As far as shampoo and waxes I do spend more money on good products as the bikes ain't cheap eh. But I used to spend loads on the car stuff wich I now use on the bike more than the car lol.
