I’ve been diagnosed with OCD since I was five years old, it’s been literally life-ruining. People have all these assumptions it’s about being clean, or orderly, or just uptight. No, it’s awful, disturbing intrusive thoughts that are so shameful you’ve never told anyone in your life, and then mind-numbing, sometimes painful rituals just done in the hope it will keep the Bad away. Even if you don’t believe it, better safe than sorry. It’s not necessarily about numbers, or washing hands, or being neat. It’s constant fear and shame and worry.

But the disease taught me to separate best and worst people besides this disease made me tough & strong which is a positive thing for me. OCD introduced me with my inner qualities too. For more than 3years I'm leading a normal life without any type of medication and I see OCD now as my opportunity. Obsession is the other name of "Curiosity+Stubbornness" combinedly which is essential for learning new things. I have learned to manipulate the power of OCD whenever needed.

The most annoying part for me about having OCD is that people assume I don't just because I'm such a slob. My OCD is really related to my GAD so it's more of a ritualistic way that I avoid my triggers, and messiness is not one of my triggers.

  • @fg14311

It's also annoying when people say they're OCD when they're not because I can never tell if that's a way for them to further a discussion about OCD because they also have it. Teal Aztec I often have intrusive thoughts when I'm around other people, like "You could pull her hair" or "You could step really hard on his foot", but I've never acted upon them. And then there are those thoughts I have to think over and over again for minutes on end, just repeating sentences or concepts in my head. I'm planning to go to a doctor to see about those things, but I have no idea what it could be except OCD. What do you categorize as intrusive thoughts? (If I messed anything up, I'm sorry. My English's a little bit rusty)

OCD runs in my family. I have it along with my mom and grandmother, and my great grandmother when she was alive. It can feel like you're going crazy sometimes, but treatment with medication and just talking about it has made me a much happier person. I used to cry a lot and have regular panic attacks, begging to just be normal. After being clinically diagnosed and realizing that I had a chemical imbalance in my brain that resulted in OCD, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and depression, I learned to accept myself. All I can say is that there is light at the end of the tunnel, never give up on yourself, the only person standing in my way was me.

I cannot have the volume on TV to be an odd number if it isn't a five multiple otherwise start feeling *horrible!* I don't even know why! I have to eat my food in a certain order, and while I am chewing on my food, I start organizing my food by size, color, or shape. I have to pick up my fork first. I could be going to eat a bit of soup, but if I have a fork, I have to pick it up, set it down, and then grab a spoon and start eating. I have to tap on a door after I close it. While a video is loading, I have to be *completely still.* I cannot be moving or anything or I get anxious for some reason. Every time I take six steps I have to blink. *Those are just the ones I consider weird, so* *don't judge me please.*

I have it bad about germs too, but not in the way most people have it, for instance people tell me you're ocd yet you work with babies, and well what I say it's that their little germs don't bother me, in fact that's not the type of germs I worry or obsess about...my fear and concern and anxiety is directly related to any microscopic little bug or insect...I can't do pets, the outdoors and or just any floor or bench or space...I can't just use or wear someone else's things...I have a fear that if I use someone else's hair brush per say that I'll get a skin infection. So my worries and concerns are bot related to anyone else but me...the fear that something will happen to me!!

same! my ocd is about germs and also a bit about organization: i touched my phone, i’ll have to wash my hands now because they’re dirty. i’ve been out my house, i’ll have to change into freshly washed clothes because i’m dirty. i’ve touched something outside, i’ll have to shower again because what if the germs spreaded. it bothers me so much and i’ve had it since my childhood.

Literally I can relate to this video so much. I haven't been officially diagnosed, and I know claiming to have OCD without having it is one of the biggest pet peeves for people with it, but the part where they describe that weird voice in the back of your head, the feeling like you are a danger to people you know, being unable to get horrible thoughts out of your head...I feel that way all the time. 3:00 I do that exact thing too with multiples of 4 and 8 lol.

I love him with all my heart but the ocd has turned our family into a chaotic mess. Everybody tiptoeing in case something is set in the wrong place. There is a huge list of places we can go, say or touch ( eg mailbox, McDonald’s, use only the one car). I won’t be around to see what happens but I am worried sick.

LLooper Games ehhhh I have to disagree with you on that one. I struggle with ADHD and my sister struggles with ADD. Our school lives were drastically different because she couldn't pay attention and I couldn't pay attention *and* sit still. People with ADD will just zone out and have a really hard time paying attention to things and people with ADHD can go to jail or worse because of their compulsions. A compulsion that I have is to steal things. It's extremely common in people with ADHD. A difference between ADD and ADHD is a person with ADD will think "I could steal this but I'm not going to because it's wrong" and then a person with ADHD won't even think before stealing something. And if they do think, they'll rationalize it. This is such a long response to what you said and sorry about that but I just feel as though for the most part, ADD and ADHD should be classified as two separate things. (I hope you didn't take this response negatively. I just wanted to throw in my two cents)

When ppl say they think they're a little OCD, they actually mean OCPD. OCD is an anxiety order where you do something compusively in order to get rid of your anxiety. OCPD is a personality disorder where you like things a certain way, perfectionist about certain things, inflexible, stubborn, and maybe have a tendency to hoard

I really wish people would understand that there’s no “standard” for OCD. It’s not always about cleaning. My room is 9/10 in disarray but that’s partly because it soothes me. However, I cannot ignore when my mind is saying I need to wash my hands. Or rituals, such as locking my car 4 times, then a 5 second break, and another 3 times. Sometimes, OCD is totally unrelated to either. And that’s okay. There’s no face to ocd. There’s no “I’m ocd because my job makes me wash my hands before leaving the restroom”

The thing about ocd is that it isn't always "my pens have to be in a straight line" or "if something isn't perfectly balanced I get upset" It's usually having to do Something until it feels just right. It's having to repeat or stop an action to feel okay. Plus ocd brings intrusive thoughts and feelings of intense anxiety and fear. It's different for everyone but that's how it is for me. Ocd is no joke, it freaking sucks :(

Gwen Davies exactly, there are people who perform compulsions to relieve intrusive thoughts and people who perform compulsions to relieve sensations. i've had both, though the intrusive thoughts are practically gone and i dont perform compulsions for them if they pop up. the sensations though i have absolutely no control over. i've gotta say, the intrusive thoughts are so so so so so much easier to use CBT with and the meds. sensations CBT doesnt do jack shit, and its so annoying. the sensations are truly the hardest to deal with, because you cant ignore sensation like you can a thought. i have the feeling of wrongness and doing something til its right, then i also have physical feelings. like, i have "contamination" (not really what it is, its a mix of rightness and what ima say next) and i get a pressure on the contaminated area of my skin that feels like someone is touching it, or i have my hand on something, or like its covered in something, and i needa wash my hands until i feel right and until the sensations of pressure etc have gone, they only go away with soap and water.

It makes me physically uncomfortable if I type the letters that bother me out. Try writing a 30+ page paper when you hate to use certain letters. 😓 The intrusive thoughts definitively suck, especially when it accompanies checking behaviors. Ugh.

OCD is so diverse. There are situations that it is helpful and others in which it is harmful. I am diagnosed with autism and OCD. The material parts for me are good but the mental parts or pure o is quite scary and made me want to die. If you have ptsd along with OCD that can be a nightmare. Yoga, exercise, breathing, chanting, nature and minimalism are helpful for me. No one talks about pure o and that is a very big part that no one can see but its terrible to experience. Is much rather manipulate material objects than fantasize about sex and violence hard core. Its so bad that you can no longer tell the difference between fantasy and reality. It can cause a lot of paranoia.

I have actually been diagnosed with both OCD and autism myself. Due to the combination, I obsessive pick at my own scabs/skin, and now I have a ton of scars. I normally feel sick to my stomach after I do so, but I can't just 'control it,' like people say I should. I'm sick of people saying that OCD is about keeping things clean, when that is what a normal person should do.

When people say something is triggering their OCD and I dont see anything triggering I get super anxious that something somewhere is wrong and I get the overwhelming urge to cry, clean and cry some more

So many people will say “they’re OCD” when it’s just certain things that have to be perfect,That’s not OCD, I do that but so does everyone.

I hope they do those because I have both. For CFS one would be "you slept in so late, why would you need a nap already"?, and for my depression my twin brother keeps telling me "just change your outlook on life, be more positive"

Tara N once I was reading a book about about anxiety and my little brother was like Little brother: why are reading that? Me: why not? Little brother: you don't have anxiety. Me: says who? Little brother: your actions. Like WTF do you want me to do? Pass out?! (I didn't actually say that last bit BTW)

I'm so happy about this video! What she said at the beginning about being 'obsessive compulsive disorder' is so true!!! It's so annoying. I don't know why people would want to claim to have a disorder they don't anyway. I'm particular about certain things and people say I'm 'so OCD' as if that would be a death sentence if it were true, yet they say it about themselves like it's a trophy they carry 😡😡
