Things NOT to Say to Deaf People [CC]

Transcript: docs.google.com/document/d/1a...
For today's video, I decided to act out some of the reactions that hearing people have when I tell them I'm Deaf! Hearing people can have some ridiculous and funny reactions to deaf people. We literally just can't hear, but occasionally hearing people will freak out, not know what to do, or even run away. I hope after this video you have a new perspective on how you interact with deaf people. Like, share, subscribe, and enjoy!!!

Someone once handed me a note "can you read and write?" after i told them I'm deaf. I wrote it down on note "no and no" and gave it to them. They was very bewildered and lost for words. Lol

It's awfully rude to say to someone, but to act like it's not realistic in any way is kinda wrong.

The most annoying thing I have ever experienced, is when someone says something and then turns around and says “ Don’t worry about it” and walks off. The other is “ Turn your hearing aids up” . People think hearing aids and cochlear implants make you hear perfectly, but they are wrong.

@@dokayy Many people don’t understand what hearing loss or deafness means in full context. There are many different things that can make communication difficult. Cochlear implants are designed to give the implanted person what is considered close to normal hearing. I am quite fortunate that my CI has worked well for me, while for some it doesn’t . They aren’t perfect yes, but are far better than hearing aids. I learned Australian sign language in high school, but don’t use it much today.

I’ve seen deaf people being treated like that too many times. Very annoying. Chrissy, I hope this hasn’t happened to you. I was actually misdiagnosed as MR as a kid solely due to my speech impairment! I have the last laugh since I have two college degrees. I truly hate that term (and refuse to use it). It took the APA over 40 years to change that term to intellectual disability. I’m glad you are doing great with showing others that deaf doesn’t mean dumb. Do people actually say the first one? Like they really associate deafness with being ugly? The only time I've asked people if they are deaf (using voice and ASL at the same time) is to confirm it because they could be mute or have some language processing disorder that makes it difficult for them to communicate. That and I ask if they prefer signing because I know some individuals might not or don't know the langauge. But I've been able to help a couple people at work easily because I understood ASL where no one else did. Anyway, I just found your channel! Love it! Your hair always looks great too btw!

One time I was like “Hey, I’m deaf in my right ear, could you stand on my left side so I can hear you better?” And they were like, “No, I can hear you perfectly” and I was like, “No, no, no, IM deaf in my right ear so if you could just like stand on my left side, it would be easier…” and they said, “But you can talk, you’re not deaf.”

Thanks for your video as I’ve been working on teaching myself ASL for my autism…I worked at a job where the customers would sign to me and I would sign to them yet at the time I didn’t know much yet they were kind enough to teach me so we could small chat whenever I came by to do janitorial duties for them..These were my favorite customers to get to know!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

@@rbdoublegoodythegoodness2725 It's best to learn from a Deaf native. You don't wanna formally learn from someone who's still learning the language. If you're in a study group, that's different.

I just found this channel, and immediately subscribed. I have meniere's disease, and have been progressively losing my hearing since I was 12 (I'm now 43). I am deaf in one ear, and hard of hearing in the other. Hearing aids won't help me at this point, and I've already started learning ASL in case my hearing goes away completely. One of the most annoying things I get as a HOH person is when I tell someone I'm HOH, they always reply with "What? Hahaha".... I usually roll my eyes and reply "yeah, haven't heard that one before." I've also been asked (by family members!!) why I wouldn't get a cochlear implant if my hearing goes away completely. I've been like this most of my life, and don't have a problem with it. It also isn't my job to conform to my hearing family that I only see maybe once a year. Looking forward to checking out more videos on your channel! 😊👋

I'm trying to pick up ASL and it's really fun, I really love studying languages and sign is a new type of language for me, since I've only learned about spoken languages before. It's also a lot easier for me to pick up. I was always good with choreography in plays because the muscle memory of "when this situation happens, you do this" practiced over and over would make it almost instinctive. It's obviously not the same but my point is that muscle memory kind of brings me some peace of mind to practice it and just get comfortable with it. I also like the fact that you can't really be half paying attention to a conversation, you have to focus or you'll miss something. I think people would say less stupid stuff if every language was like that.

The bullshit one is the one I see most often as a hearing person, so many people think they’re so hilarious just because they “know a bad word in asl” but it’s not even a real sign haha 😆
