For the size of Lexington it's actually a nice and clean city. Only issue is that for being a mid to small size city the traffic is a mess because of the road layout. The city is very compact and could use a monorail system to help with traffic congestion. Overall Lexington is a nice place.

I think being a college town is a positive thing. It means there are a lot more cultural events, sporting events, and other activities than one would otherwise expect for a city the size of Lexington. We have a huge university in downtown Indianapolis (IUPUI, soon to separate into IU Indianapolis and Purdue Indianapolis) with about 30,000 students, but it's mostly a commuter school without as much influence on the city as it should have. It's a satellite and not the main campus for either school, and it shows.

There is a free ESL class at the Lexington Public Library that is for all levels, beginner through advanced. It's held in the morning on Mondays and Wednesdays if you are able to come. Most Americans speak more slowly in Kentucky than in other parts of the country. If you can understand this video you will have few problems in English.

I moved to Lexington back in 89 and thought it was a great place to live. New Circle Road makes it easy to get around and the crime was very low. It had major concerts and great shopping, and I considered it a big little city. It had all the great things a big city has without all the big city problems. The economy seemed very diverse and was a beautiful city to live in. I can't think of one bad complaint I had about Lexington. I hated moving away and have always considered moving back.

My wife will be done w/her PhD program at FSU in the near future and the University of Kentucky is at the top of her list for possible employment (Even though she is an undergrad alum from University of Tennessee!). Lexington sounds great to us! We're not too concerned w/Lexington being a college town since Tallahassee also has this in common. In fact, both cities have some similarities w/challenges and population size. Hopefully we will become residents of Lexington one day and appreciate your videos.

I'm originally from Atlanta. We have MARTA - subway and bus. As for Lextran it moves 365. When I lived in Lexington Lextran was my main source of transportation. And yes it's not like Atlanta which runs 20 hours per day it still viable. So IMO for a small to mid size city Lexington has a very good public transportation system.

I'm just back from visiting Lexington. Richmond Road (near to downtown) and the streets coming off Richmond boast the most beautiful homes in the area hands down. Checking Zillow, they seem to range in price from around $850k to a couple million. They are comparable in appearance and quality to some of the vintage homes still standing in Beverly Hills. Stunning, pristine vintage homes. They have to be seen. As for hotel staying: I was going to stay in one of the downtown hotel properties, but after reading some reviews online, I was suspicious that nighttime sleep would be difficult. In fact, I was glad I stayed in the Hamburg area, though Hamburg is typical suburbia with every national food chain represented. Why? I found the reviews of hotels on Main Street downtown to be accurate. The street noise is insane and there really is unimpeded late night drag racing going on there. I'm surprised Lexington doesn't try to control that. It's a shame because the two newish downtown Marriott properties are beautiful and there will be some visitors who stay away from those downtown hotels because of the noise, which is, again, a shame. Most definitely, there were people shouting and screaming around the downtown bars. The UK campus, I would say, was impressive. Though not a frat guy myself, I have to say UK has some of the most beautiful frat houses I've seen around the country. When I was there, it was near 0 degrees, painfully cold, so I didn't get to do some of the outdoor things I might have otherwise done. The horse statues all around town are definitely a cool signature of the town. Your videos certainly helped me navigate the town. Thank you for that. I wish there was a regal historic hotel set in a nice neighborhood, but it seemed the couple of upmarket historic hotels were in the hard parts of downtown Lexington. I did think the lights going up the stairs at Rupp Arena late a night was very pretty and not to be missed. I'm surprised the Lexington local government has not done more for a city of its size (and the presence of UK) to offer incentives to airlines to bring in non-stop flights to hubs such as Newark Airport.

Honest discussion. Most real growth will be Georgetown, Verzales, Paris etc. There are no real suburbs of Lexington. Expect private school tuition to be a regular expense. Walking and biking possibilities in town get a grade of C. If you don't like to talk sports ie. basketball you may be in trouble. Too much emphasis on alcohol and drinking.

Lexington's public schools are some of the best in the state. I wouldn't recommend paying for private school unless your child is very average and sort of unmotivated. Public schools do a better job providing for gifted students and for students with special needs, but if your kid is just super average they might benefit more from the smaller class sizes in a private school.

Side note about food: Lexington is such an average American city that many restaurant chains like to market test new restaurants here to see how well their business model would work here. We had a Shakespeare and Co. a long time ago but it closed. It is based out of the UAE, and their prices were really too high for this area. I don't think they have opened a restaurant in the USA since the test restaurant didn't work out here. So, the lesson is that if you hear about a restaurant you want to try, don't wait too long to try them out because they might decide the market here doesn't work for them and they might close quickly.

Jackie are you still thinking of moving to Kentucky. I have seen a lot of clients moving here to Kentucky from Florida because of the rise in home insurance and property taxes. I would do the Lexington and Lexington adjacent cities. Much safer than Louisville. Locals like to complain about crime and such but truth is compared to other large metros the crime states are some of the lowest in the nation.

If you mean you want to move here, you would need a work visa which is hard to get in the US without an employer to sponsor you. There is a chronic, maybe even dire, teacher shortage here so if you have teaching credentials you could contact some teacher recruitment agencies. I know there are teacher recruiters in the Philippines who train and provide cultural orientation and job placement in schools all over the USA. I don't know what your work background is but you could also try contacting companies in the area that are hiring. The Japan American Society of Central Kentucky keeps a big updated list of job openings on their website so you could start by researching some of the companies on their list.
