I think MGK didn’t understand the culture when he came from the rap scene. In rap as far as I’m aware it’s a normal thing to manufacture “beef” with other artists as a form of self-promotion. This is less common in metal and especially frowned upon to do this with respected “elders” in the scene.

@@leagueoflemons6844 Here's the thing, though. I'd wish modern metal bands could be as big as they used to be back in the 80's. Problem being that the industry and the audience has changed so much that if at all this is only possible by one of two things. You either work your butt of over a very long period (and be lucky to hit a nerve) or you lower your own standards so much that your music becomes acceptable for parts of the mainstream audience, at which point, unluckily, it isn't real metal anymore. Now I don't even mind things not being metal, I also listen to rap, some hip hop and a few select pop artists. And I certainly don't mind artists wanting to be commercially successful with their music. But at least be honest about it instead of pretending that it's still all about the art when it clearly isn't.

Man, for years I played live shows and went to shows with no ear protection. Practiced my drums with a PA system blasting. You know how you get a ringing in your ears after being exposed to loud noises for an extended time? That happened to me all of the time and by the next day, the ringing would be gone. Until it wasn't. I've had tinnitus for 7 years now. I will never know what it's like to hear silence again. There is always a hissing/ringing in my right ear. It took a long time to just adjust to it and learn to live with it. But it really sucks. People ABSOLUTELY need to protect their ears. Tinnitus is fucking obnoxious.

Metal is a slowly evolving structure that keeps going back and forth between what is acceptable. Like, Slaughter To Prevail reminds me so much of 2000s myspace deathcore, when that genre was pretty much dead in the 2010s. My brother in law had an extra ticket to their concert in Nashville last month(same week as Knotfest Roadshow which was an amazing show) and asked me to go. I hadn't heard anything really from them since Pray for Plagues/Chelsea Smile, Count You're Blessings/Suicide Seasons so that's what I was expecting as I really enjoyed those albums but had'nt kept up with them. Boy was I ever wrong. He deliberately didn't tell me just how far removed and poppy they sound now cause he knew I wouldn't have went lol. As soon as they started playing I'm like wtf is this shit dude, are you sure this is the same band, this the stuff my wife listens to and come to find out she does like them currently. I've never seen such a dramatic transformation in style within the same "genre". I waited the entire thing hoping they'd play at least ONE song I knew from their old stuff to no avail. Needless to say I couldn't stand it lol but good on them for changing so dramatically and finding success cause the place was PACKED. I did see plenty of Count Your Blessings and Suicide Seasons shirts despite them not having anything from that era at the merch table. I wish they would play at least one song from the era at shows though cause it is their history and what made them famous originally and I'm sure plenty of their fans would appreciate it.

Before Ire a lot of parkway drives fanbase complained they didn’t change their sound, then as we know today a lot of those same people complain they changed their sound. Same thing happened with the amity affliction before misery came out. People complained when they didn’t change up their sound but again a lot of those same people complained when they caved in. I have to disagree with the MGK take on this video. Nobody in the metal scene loved MGK. He was loved by his regular fans for his hop hop stuff. My personal dislike as well as others actually started when he attacked Eminem on a song and I'm sure other metalheads would agree with me as well. Then he got even more hated when he made the switch over to the rock scene and taking shots at other artists. Not saying you're wrong but from my perspective, he was never loved by the metal scene Edit: Forgot to mention he made immature and weird comments about Eminems daughter on Twitter. That's another reason why fans including metalheads don't like him.

I also like when bands change their sound to a certain extent like that's why Ice Nine Kills, Avenged Sevenfold, and Linkin Park are tied as my number one band you never know what you're in for with new albums because they change it up but also keep their defining features. Also as someone who grew up on Classic Metal and Rock I do find Riffs and guitar solos very important for me to love a song but I also think lyrics might be the think I value most.

MGK made Tommy Lee endearing. Being a metal head means I get to go to shows for 10-20 dollars. Perks. Also, my son played me a song from Pantera the other day, and I knew it was the first track from Cowboys from Hell. Still can't remember the name haha. Chanting one more song is typically to allow the headlining band a breather for the closer. Lorna Shore just did that recently. My son was lucky enough to get a set-list. I had recently watched a couple of videos trying to understand my tastes in music better. This was a mistake. While I enjoy metal, trying to attach myself to a particular subgenre is basically impossible. I'd be like taking a gradient of Red and Green and saying "Find me where Red doesn't have any green in it" and then having everyone come to a consensus. Better yet, a crimson and Red gradient. Ultimately, I ended up with this: 1)is it theatrical? 2) can I apply it to a movie scene? Fight scene? Emotion? If it's a yes to any of these 2, I'll probably enjoy it. It's probably why I really like video game metal music like Doom and Metal Hellsinger. Just ticks all those boxes.

I really like Nik's nuanced approach to MGK. Also, in terms of bands not changing their sound, I think bands in certain genres can get away with it. Barely anyone complains about Rise Against, Breaking Benjamin, or August Burns Red not changing because those genres they're a part of (Melodic Hardcore, Alt Metal, and Metalcore) allow different bands to do the genre their way. Meanwhile, if a band that is part of pop punk (like a band called State Champs), for example, were to stick with the same formula, some people would likely get sick of it pretty quick.

But looking back, that whole ordeal created the copyright we have today and made big enough a noise to form the online trading of music we see now. His originaly concern was 100% fair for all artists, even including the big names.. artists don't really make good money via album sales and getting less hurt so many smaller artists.

I think theyre more getting at or I hope theyre getting at with the riffs is that some songs are just riffs or as trey calls them riff salad. Like theres no cohesion or memorable part of the song its just a bunch of riffs slapped together. I could be wrong though.
