Things I Wish I Knew As A Pre-Vet Student | Before Vet School Tips

Is your GPA and GRE good enough? What kinds of experience should you get? Is a Caribbean school good? Is it worth it going to an out-of-state school? These are all questions many pre-veterinary students have. I know I sure did. I tried to mention briefly why I got interested in vet medicine and also general things I had questions about. Time cards are below.
Why I wanted to be a veterinarian: 1:45
Undergrad Life (Majors, Classes, etc): 4:30
In-state vs. Out of State: 7:51
Application (GPA, GRE, Experience, Essays): 9:04
Caribbean Schools: 16:04
Feel free to leave suggestions or more video requests. Also message me about my schooling or vet school in general on Facebook or Instagram:

I’m not the best at Biology by not having any strong foundation on it. I was too just like you mentioned interested in wildlife conservation or exotic animals and working abroad. I’m starting to have doubts if this is for me as I’m not super great in science like some people at vet school. Any tips on what I can do to better myself in science? I have thought about changing in sport science as I’m passionate about sport or even a creative field like graphic design which completely irrelevant to what I’m doing now. • @BrittneyKilgore

    Hi! It all depends on the veterinarian/clinic and if they're willing to take responsibility for you. In many clinics I've worked at, they will hire people 16-18ish/highschoolers as a kennel tech. Even getting this handling experience is important and helps. If you for sure want to go to vet school, work your way up to a tech. Tell them you're interested in being a tech and they will likely train you up :) I'd contact vets in your area and ask to volunteer or gain experience as a vet tech or kennel tech as a job.

    High school is still SO early. If your dream is to become a vet, do just that! No one knows what you're capable of. College is a whole different ballgame and the science classes are hard. But, just like everyone out there who is a vet, we've all had to take the same classes to get where we are. Its doable. You just may have to put in more effort at times than non-science degree seeking people.

    I plan on taking a bachelors degree in marine biology first before joining DVM. I’m able to get a first year exemption from a marine bio course since I already have a diploma in marine science but I realised that I would be skipping the first year general mods like general biology, organic chemistry, genetics and physics which are the prerequisites required for DVM. I would be diving straight into year 2 and 3 specialised mods (aquatic animal anatomy, aquatic biology, genetics etc.). Do you think I would still be able to apply for the DVM programme for SGU? Or is it recommended that I take a full 4 years general biology degree instead?

  • @BrittneyKilgore

    Hi, I am currently a kennel tech at a local vet clinic. When applying to vet school would you count this as animal hours or vet hours? Most of my job takes place in the treatment area and my job description can be similar to a vet assistant (I frequently care for surgical instruments, help restrain, etc). In addition would you submit the total hours worked at the clinic as vet hours since I can frequently watch what the vets are doing? Or separate my hours worked into animal exp and vet exp?

  • @nataliekelley801

    Hey Brittney! Hope you are doing well; I just had 2 questions for you that I hope you can answer. How many letters of recommendation did you have? And also, how many hours of experience in total did you have when applying?

  • @BrittneyKilgore

    @BrittneyKilgore

    3 жыл бұрын

    I did 3 LORs - 2 from a vet and 1 not from a vet. If it's the same as when I applied, you can submit up to 6 but VMCAS will only review 3. So for example, if they require 2 vet letters and you submit 4, they will randomly choose 2 so its best to submit 3 quality LORs from people you know you want them to read. Second, I had about 5,000+ hours of experience of small animal. SGU still required me to get 200 hours of large animal experience to keep my acceptance, so I would recommend trying to get a mixed experience if possible (large and small, food animal, lab, research) even if its just animal experience like volunteering on a farm or at zoo. But also don't get intimidated by that number. I know people who had only a few hundred hours too.

    No, you don't take it in vet school, but every vet school in the US (including Ross and SGU) require 8 hours of general chem and 8 hours of organic chem as a prereq. • @BrittneyKilgore

    Hey! Yes, volunteering helps applying to college and vet school. When applying for vet school, there is a section for hours of animal exprience and hours for vet experience which means directly under the supervision of a veterinarian. Both help! (are you a college sophmore or high school sophomore)? In regards to choosing what kind of vet, getting the most experience possible is my suggestion. You have so much time to figure it out. Many people change in vet school after getting experience or taking certain courses. You could also do mix practice which is a vet which kind of does a mix of small and large animal. Honestly, the choices are endless

Unfortunately, its just one of those classes you have to get through

    I never considered vet school, I was never the kid that dreamed of being a vet. I started off wanting to do animal rescue rehab. I learned that you need a biology degree to do so, so I changed my major to Biology and doubling in animal studies. Then I learned to work hands on with animals, you either have to be a zoo keeper or a vet. I then came to the realization that I really just wanted to take care of animals so I decided to go pre-vet. I have no experience. I’m getting experience tho, I’m volunteering at Clearwater marine aquarium in the sea turtle and aquatic biology department and trying to pick up a shift in the rehab/clinic to shadow a vet. I’m in my fourth year of college but I have two more years of undergrad because I changed my major so late and added a second major. I feel like I’m an idiot for considering vet school but I have never worked so hard for anything in my life. I just feel so drawn to it, I’m so determined. Idk

    Hi, I have a question, so I saw this story where the vet got fired because she had a medical marijuana card and had it in her system. She sued the hospital. Is that really a big deal in the veterinarian career path? I have really bad anxiety and I would like to use MM instead of medicine because I don’t like the way the medicine makes me feel. Is that something that could prohibit me from being a veterinarian when I get there?

  • @BrittneyKilgore

    I’m not 100% sure. I personally haven’t heard of any concerns like this. I feel that as long as you could prove it’s medical and of course not abuse it, you’d be fine. If it’s legal in the state you’re practicing in and you’re using it for medicinal purposes, you shouldn’t be able to be fired or discriminated against for that

    I think getting the HBCU experience while you can is awesome. I had scholarship offers to Tuskegee and Hampton for undergrad and often wish I'd taken those routes as opposed to UGA. Your undergrad school itself doesn't matter. Just focus on grades/GPA/hours to have a competitive application regardless where you go.

    There is still a stigma around Caribbean schools. Caribbean schools are vastly easier to get into. Most are for profit. They’re more interested in making a profit than turning out good doctors. That’s why us med/vet schools are difficult to get into. They want to turn out good highly qualified doctors. I wish you the best of luck but just know it is significantly harder to be a doctor from a Caribbean school in the us.

  • @BrittneyKilgore

    @BrittneyKilgore

    2 жыл бұрын

    Well, I'm 3/4 of the way through my veterinary training and have encountered no issues. There is still stigma, 100% but alot of it is slowly but surely changing. Plus, at SGU and Ross, they are AVMA accredited. You do your normal training and as long as you past the NAVLE, the same license exam anyone at a US vet school would take, you're a veterinary doctor just the same. No extra training or years of school. So as long as you're accepted and pass and get your license, I don't see how it's "significantly harder" to become a doctor.

  • @DeathMetalFatCat

    @@BrittneyKilgore I guess I worded that last part not the best. What I mean is practicing vet med in the us is harder coming from a Caribbean school. By no means impossible. As stated I do wish you the best of luck. I hope you find a job that’s very fulfilling and makes you happy!

    @@DeathMetalFatCat This is an old thread, but that makes sense. Mizzou in Cape Girardeau, Missouri is trying to tempt my son into applying. They accepted him with no application and said he'll be automatically accepted in vet school in Grenada if he gets good grades. That seemed sketchy to me, because only 3800 applicants get into American vets schools per year.
