• FIRST TIME IN RIO DE J...
Welcome to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! This week we got an up close and personal experience at one of the world’s biggest parties: CARNIVAL! This lively, colorful, and loud tradition originated in Rio de Janeiro, and today we’re giving you a look at all that goes into this long running tradition. Every year samba schools from around Rio practice extreme and elaborate choreographed shows that they’ll perform to compete for a slot in the main Rio Carnival event. We learned so much about the history of the event, samba, and the work that goes into making this event happen. Carnival is SO MUCH more than just a party- it’s tradition, culture, and heritage, and seeing the way the communities come alive for their friends and families in the samba schools was so special. Would you or have you attended Carnival? Let us know in the comments below!

    Carnival is a major party, when people can dance, get cathartic and crazy ❤️ but is also massive way of Brazilian people to express our culture and scream demands through the themes of the samba schools and the small parades in the streets, through irony and laughter. It's the best ❤️

    Thank you for so much respect for our culture. Yes, Carnaval is very important to us. It's really a competition every year. In the main group (league) we have 12 Samba Schools creating different stories every year. Each one with around 3.000 members. It's an important source of work and income to this people. Fashion and art workers, musicians, designers, writers, researchers m It's a lot of work for two days of presentations. And in the next year they do everything different. I just love my City and the people that live here.

    How fun that you were able to enjoy part of Carnival!!! I was lucky enough to spend 6 months in Rio for my job back in 2005 and was there during Carnival and actually got to "parade" with the schools! We were WAY in the back with the tourists and not part of the judging, but it was still such an amazing experience and one that I will never forget. I am still in touch with the friends that I met during my short time there are Rio is always in my heart. The city is amazing and you can't leave without taking a part of it with you!!!

    There's two types of carnival here. Street carnival which is the most common where people are just partying, using costumes and drinking freely and there's samba school's, which is what you are seeing in this video and only happens in Rio. This airs on TV for people to watch. They prepare for this competition for the entire year, usually all the themes have a social critique behind, the girls you see dancing samba on videos , the school queens workout the entire year like crazy to dance for these competitions.

    @@csoniah4432 Just a small correction. This type of competition doesn't just happen in Rio, but all over Brazil. And even out of the country. We export the samba school parade to Argentina, Uruguay and Japan. The difference is that few have the size of Rio de Janeiro. São Paulo is one of the biggest, but it still doesn't come close to the level of Rio's carnival.

Rs

    The official parade is fun. But it gets old for locals so the real fun is in the street parties during carnival. It goes like this: Carnival is officially always on some Tuesday either in February or March. Most people don't have to work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during carnival week (schools and universities also pause during this time). Some employers are good enough to give you the entire week off, most universities do give students the entire week off (students just do it themselves anyways). So the street parties begin the Friday before carnival Tuesday and happen everyday till Sunday after carnival Tuesday. The parties are all over the cities, you can catch one any time of the day or night. Clubs, bars and private spaces will also be throwing parties all the time during these 10 days. It is amazing. When I was younger I'd go party hopping with my friends. You begin a carnival day in one party next thing you know you've been to 15 different places and it is the next day's night and you only go home because you have to sleep so bad. And then there is "Carnival hangover", which is the weekend in the week after carnival. Which is pretty much the same but only for a weekend. Hangover happens only in major cities such as Rio and São Paulo. Unfortunately street carnival was called off this year and last year due to the thing. Some parties happened anyways.

    @Uncle Gold School parades are only in Rio. The most common carnival in Brazil is street carnival and the majority of people definitely like this one the most because not everyone can get on a plane and go to rio. These parades are shown on TV for the rest of the country and that's it. Each state has their own tradition, I like bahia and Olinda the most.

  • @TheAdrianaPolari

    @TheAdrianaPolari

    @Uncle Gold I don't think the reason they hate samba schools is because they address Afro-Brazilian needs. To be honest, the themes of samba schools here vary. They are not always controverse. I like the parade because it's luxurious. As Joaosinho Trinta used to say: who likes poverty are the intelectuals. The parade is what put Rio Carnival on the map of the world's festivals and it's amazing. Just it. No one is against blacks in Brazil. Brazil is the most mixed country in the world. Let's stop dividing people here into skin colors. We are at least 100 years late for that.

  • @ulissesduarte9937

    @ulissesduarte9937

    @Uncle Gold I'm from Brasil and I totally agree with you Uncle Gold. The alt right partisans in Brasil hate the carnival party. But not just the afro-brazilian parades: they hate the popular culture, the universities, The Science and Technology, the minorities groups and the arts in general. Brasil is a racial mixed country, but the racism is a real thing when you think about our social structure based in severe inequalities. Brazilian racial harmony is a fake issue and the racial tensions are like disguised points that people try to deny.

The school converts into a Stadium for watching the parade. The classrooms convert into very luxurious private boxes that are rented at the tune of thousands of dollars. They are equipped with excellent AC, posh furniture, Persian rugs, and catered with the best foods and beverages.

    Oh my gosh! We 100% remember you! We had such a wonderful stay at the Sheraton and we’ve told several people since that it’s a great, dog friendly hotel, largely because of how nice you always were to our dog. ☺️ thanks for making our time in rio all the better! ❤️

    I would like to point out the suggestion that the schools are divided into groups. Elite has 12 schools, gold 12, and it goes down. Only elite and gold got to perform on the main runway. The others perform in a not so “glorious” area called intendente Magalhães (about 40 minutes away from sambódromo). Each school has a different theme/song every year, and those songs and themes can’t be repeated. Unless they receive authorization to “revive” the song but the school would have to create different costumes and floats. I’m from Rio, but I live in Florida. I go back home to perform every time I can. Carnaval is my passion, and I can answer some questions if you would like me to do it so.

    I noticed that you guys got scared with Dançarina, half naked at the samba schools rehearsal. But in carnival this is common, both in parades and in carnival street parties. At this time it is summer in Brazil, and in Rio it is normally above 40°. I know that for people from other countries it is a shock to see people half naked, on the streets so naturally. but here it's common Both on the beach, and even on streets with more relaxed clothes on normal days. But that's not why you should lose respect, and treat people like objects. It was a great video, you are always welcome. If you return to Rio, I recommend going to Angra dos Reis, Paraty, Cabo Frio, Búzios and Arraial do Cabo. Of course, in the state of Rio, there are other amazing cities too. But these are postcards of the city, outside the city of Rio.

    The official competition was held last weekend and the winner of the "grupo especial" (the major league) was announced yesterday. This is what they presented (the full parade). Hopefully it isn't blocked due to copyrights, but, if it does, look for "Grande Rio 2022" (Grande Rio is the name of the samba school, they won for the first time in their history): kzread.info/dash/bejne/hq2euqezc8Walag.html

    Carnival IS THE BIGGEST PARTY in the world!!! But the one on the streets... Salvador had an audience of 16 million within the five days of carnival in 2020, Rio over 3 million and Recife/Olinda (neighboring cities) had 2 and 3.6 million respectively. . I think Recife has the greatest diversity, and most complete experience for everyone, although maybe in Rio could better for those who want to watch (the international cliche?) from a bench. There's street carnival in Rio too, as said above, but I fell it's a little more "industrialized" experience. On the flip side salvador and Olinda is where the madness really happens, but I would recommend Olinda before Salvador; not just is a little more participatory, Olinda and Recife are right next to each other... Each one of these are unique tho ;)

    African immigration? I think you should say: SLAVERY TRADE, right ? No one was an immigrant, they were all slaves that were brought over to Brazil against they will. They gave to all Brazilians culture, food, dance and religion. I’m Brazilian and I wish you said that on video. Thanks

    Our indigenous peoples (aka Amerindians, or "American Indians") used to walk naked in the forest (many still do, at the indigenous reserves), and many Africans that were captured and sent to Brazil as slaves were also indigenous peoples that walked naked or half naked in Africa. This "indigenous nudity" (both from Amerindians and African Indians) was later incorporated by the Samba schools at their Carnaval parades. It's a form of celebration of these indigenous peoples. That's why Brazil at one hand is mostly a Christian nation and has a Penal Code which states that being naked or half naked on any public space is a crime designated as _atentado contra o pudor público_ ("attack against the public decency"), but at the same time Samba and Carnaval are such an important part of our culture that, in the context of Carnaval, nudity is considered an art form and expression of our indigenous legacy, instead of an "attack against public decency".
