The letter that Filch drops @12:53 is a course on learning magic because he is a squib (a person with no magical talent even though he comes from a wizard family - kind of the opposite of what Hermione is). Of course, he probably feels guilty about it since he is surrounded by nothing but witches and wizards. Also, Harry can hear the snake talk. Remember in the first film he talks to the snake in the zoo and it responds to him?

@@chelsea9483 A lot of people say the third one is the biggest change, where things start to really get darker, but I agree more with you. There is a definite shift in the third movie, but it is still pretty clearly geared more for kids. So the third movie is where the turn towards darker stories and concepts begins, but the fourth is where that turn is complete and you are actually on that darker road.

In the books, when Harry speaks to snakes he does realize that it isn't english. When he ran to the snake during the duel, he said something along the lines of, "don't hurt him." He had no idea that no one else understood what he was saying. When going into the chamber he says, "open up" but it takes him a few tries because he says it in English first. It isn't shown much in the movie, but Harry had a really difficult year his second year bc almost everyone thought he was the heir of Slytherin and people would run the other way when they saw him.

There are three improvised scenes in this one. The first one was Draco saying: I didn't know you can read. Tom Felton simply forgot his original line and he came up with this one, and the director thought it was hilarious and kept it. The second was the dialogue between Lucius and Harry in Dumbledore's office. Jason Isaacs thought he should say something before leaving and he decided upon "Let us hope that Mr. Potter will always be around to save the day" To which Dan Radcliffe answered without skipping a beat: "Don't worry, I will be". Isaacs was beyond impressed. He thought to himself: this isn't a child, this is a 13 year old actor. Also, he decided to kick Dobby down the stairs, something that wasn't in the script. The team thought that he slipped, because Dobby was CGI so there was nothing there.

The letter that Harry handed to Filch (the creepy janitor guy with the cat at Hogwarts) and he didn’t want anyone to see was a correspondence course (kind of like online learning today but done through letters instead of the internet) teaching him how to do basic magic. Filch is what’s called a “squib” which is someone who was born to magical parents but cannot do magic themselves.

  • @1sloo

  • @JRDickens20

Why doesn’t Harry tell an adult? If you remember the last time he went a trusted adult about a strange event that he was certain was going to happen (ie telling his head of house Professor McGonogall about Voldemort and the Sorcerer’s Stone) he was told that he was mistaken because was a kid and was meddling in things far beyond his childish knowhow and that she didn’t believe him.) This just solidified the years and years of emotional neglect and abuse he received from the Dursley’s and any adults he had tried to confide in before. Also the scene isn’t in the movie, but Harry did ask about living somewhere else and was told it wasn’t possible. So even though he like some of these adults, Hagrid, Dumbledore, McGonogall, he has been conditioned to not trust them. Add that the people he does trust, Ron and Hermione, are telling him not to tell anyone, and he is more apt to listen to them as they have never let him down or given him reason not to trust the. Hope that adds a little bit of context? I love your reviews they are very wholesome 😊

13:15 Hogwarts is somewhere in Scotland and is protected by enchantments from Muggles’ eyes. Let’s say Muggle-repelling ones. And if a Muggle somehow would get too close they would only see an illusion of a ruin. I don’t remember now if it’s mentioned in the books or somewhere else but i’m pretty sure that’s established in the lore. So it’s possible to get there by other means then the train, especially if you’re a wizard. Also i’m glad that you are watching the extended version of this movie! Most of the deleted scenes are straight up taken from the book so it’s a nice touch to have them included.

JK Rowling did excellent research and/or understood the material intuitively. While it may not have been spoken of before GoF, it was certainly in use in earlier books and would be a simple enough spell to use even casually. It's 'window dressing' level stuff; no plot point hinges on it. It's like someone asking during the first film where Harry's parents got the gold they left him in the Potters' vault in Gringotts; not a spoiler to mention it.

And since he, Harry understands Parsletongue, he didn't notice that he sounded any different. Only that the snake was listening to him. Like in the first movie, when he talked to the snake at the zoo, Harry was talking normal words, and the snake understood him. We understood him and the snake when he said, "Thanks."because we were seeing Harry's perspective. In this movie, they laid that scene out very well so that we heard what everyone else heard. They showed us that scene from the whole room's perspective. Hopefully that clears it up.

You just watched the extended version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. What was never explained in any of the movie versions is that Harry, Ron and Hermione found out that Filtch the Hogwarts caretaker is a "Squib". A Squib is a person who was born from a wizarding family but is unable to do magic. They have no magic in them. It's the reverse of a muggleborn which is what Hermione is. She was born from muggle parents but she can do magic. She was born with magic in her. It's sad for Squib because they know about the wizarding world and are exposed to it on a daily bases. But can't be a wizard because they have no magical abilities. It's like they were born physically magically impaired. So that scene you saw where Harry picks up a letter for Filtch and Filtch looks embarrassed about it is because Filtch thought he was found out. Later when Filtch's cat got petrified and he accused Harry of doing it he said it was because Harry found out the he is a squib and Harry was bullying him. In truth Harry and Hermione never understood or knew what a squib was until Ron explained it to them after Filtch accused Harry of bullying him by hurting Mrs. Norris the cat. 🪄🚫😼

Draco Malfoy's line "I didn't know you could read" was not in the original script, but when they filmed the scene, Tom Felton forgot what he was supposed to say, so he improvised the line on the spot. Shirley Henderson, who played Moaning Myrtle, was 38 years old when the movie was made, making her the oldest actress to play a Hogwarts student. Lucius Malfoy wasn't supposed to have long hair, but when Jason Isaacs was cast, he suggested he have long hair to distinguish him from Draco. In order to keep the hair from falling in his face, Isaacs had to keep his head tilted back, which give him the appearance of being snobbish, like he was looking down on everybody. J.K. Rowling, who wrote the Harry Potter series, actually created a guide to teach the cast members how to speak Parseltongue. Ron Weasley's fear of spiders was not acting. Rupert Grint suffers from such severe arachnophobia in real life that to this day he's still unable to watch the scene in Aragog's hollow. Life size statues of the cast were used in the scenes where the characters were petrified. Rupert Grint said the slugs that Ron Weasley were fake slugs with different flavored slime and admitted they taste quite good. In order to get a sense of how nasty his character was supposed to be, Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy) watched Tom Felton's performance as Draco Malfoy in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". By the time the fifth movie, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" came out, Harry Melling (Harry's cousin, Dudley Dursley) lost so much weight that he had to wear a fat suit. Lucius Malfoy's line "Let us hope Harry Potter will always be around to save the day" and Harry Potter's line, "Don't worry, I will be" were both improvised by Jason Isaacs and Daniel Radcliffe. Director Chris Columbus wasn't sure what he thought about Jason Isaac's ideas about Lucius Malfoy's costume and hair, but when Daniel Radcliffe said he thought it "looked really cool", he decided to go along with it. When Lucius Malfoy slaps Draco's hand with his cane, Jason Isaacs didn't know the cane had small fangs on the top, so Tom Felton's pain was real. Jamie Waylett, who played Draco's friend Crabbe was allergic to the fake snow used in the Winter scene, so his red cheeks in that scene wasn't because of sinuses, it was an allergic reaction. Mr. Filch is the only resident at Hogwarts who is never seen doing any magic. That's because he is a squib, which means he is non-magical, but both his parents are magical. This explains his bitterness towards the students. It's out of envy. Harry and Hagrid pass a bookstore while making their way back to Diagon Alley. If you look real close, you'll see the hard cover versions of the Harry Potter novels in the window.

It bothers me more than it probably should that it's Hermione in the movie who understands the "mudblood" slur and explains it, especially not with the emotional reaction she has, as if she's been dealing with it all her life. Until she was eleven, she'd have no idea whatsoever about the wizarding world, and certainly wouldn't have had to put up with this. As an adult, she might have that response, but here? Nope. It makes no sense. That's why it was Ron who gave the info in the book, while Hermione just said, "Well, he said something, and I could tell it was foul, but I have no idea what it meant." (I guess it goes with the pattern they have of having Hermione know EVERYTHING, and be competent in everything, while removing almost everything Ron does.)

I am terrified of spiders too! I wouldn't have been able to do what Ron did even though he was terrified. It's also explained in the book that Ron's fear of spiders comes from his brothers transfiguring his teddy bear into a spider while he was holding it when he was young. The actor who played Lucius Malfoy didn't want to initially play him - he actually tried out for the part of Gilderoy Lockhart but he relented and took the role because he felt like he could show people how Draco is the way he is because of his father. It's also amazing with how Harry grew up in that horrible family and still manages to be a courageous, loving individual. You're kind of right about the diary - Tom was able to control Ginny because she poured so much of herself into that diary, her fears and hopes and it allowed Tom's memory to gain a foothold into controlling her. He made her kill Hagrid's roosters because the crowing of a rooster will kill (i believe) a Basilisk and used the blood from that to write tom's threatening messages on the wall.

You have to understand the restraints on Dobby and how unusual it was for a house elf to work against the will of his master. Dobby cannot straight out warn Harry or tell house secrets to anyone outside the family he serves. and the ethics of not revealing secrets or badmouthing his family is so deeply ingrained that he instantly self-punishes any infraction he catches himself doing. My understanding is that house elves are genetically centered on their servitude, which is pretty weird. whether this is actually genetic or a socially-instilled belief doesn't matter in function. Dobby wanted to be a free elf, which is an alien and sickening prospect for any ordinary house elf, yet when Dobby was freed he continued working in the kitchens under Hogwarts's dining hall AND talking Dumbledore down in wages paid for Dobby's service. This reminds me of the theory of why the Israelites freed by Moses had to wander in the desert for 40 years; the enslaved generation had to die off so only Israelites who grew up not knowing overlords and masters could settle as a free people resistant to future enslavement.

Harry has a very rare ability to talk to snakes and at that moment he was just telling the snake to back off from Justin Finch Fletchley. Everyone was scared because they didn't know this about him and also because both Salazar Slytherin and Voldemort both had that same ability. The voice Harry heard throughout Hogwarts was the voice of the basilisk. The magical car is a Ford Anglia and is basically a regular car that Mr. Arthur Weasley put spells on.

Not serious, very Shakespeare, very Kenneth Branaugh (also a ton of cool actors you will recognize).

Regarding how Floo Powder works: Theoretically, you could probably go anywhere, but it's all connected to specific fireplaces through what's called the Floo Network, so it'll take you to the closest possible fireplace to where you want to go; in other words, it's kind of like a public bus system. Also fun fact: Harry's and Lucius' "Let's just hope Harry Potter will always be around to save the day" and "Don't worry, I will be" was improvised. Jason Isaacs (Lucius) wanted to have a big exit line, so Chris Columbus let him improvise to see what happened, and Daniel Radcliffe improvised his response. Apparently Isaacs had a lot of respect for him after that.

Thank you both for being such great reactors, not being obnoxious or talking over crucial plot points - and just being a delight to listen to and watch! Watching this reaction was so refreshing after the last channel I watched HP on, I'll just leave it at that. I can't wait to see Prisoner of Azkaban - like so many, it's my fave ☺️

Harry didn't realise he was speaking snake. Remember in the first film with the snake at the zoo? We hear him speak English but it was probably parceltoung just hidden as English since we saw it from Harry's perspective

Out of the first two I prefer 1. ☆Actor spoiler alert☆ not plot, story, or content, just actor: Out of all the movies this is my favourite Dumbledore actor. I miss him. He passed away in 2002, so he isn't in the other movies.

15:30 the irony of that statement is much more obvious now. I'll tell you why. The reason Harry Potter is so wealthy is his ancestors created this hair product that is so popular that it is still in use today in the wizarding world.

While this film isn't my favorite of the _Harry Potter_ movies for reasons (e.g. Dobby, Aragog & his spider kids devouring Ron, Harry and Fang; Hermione playing a smaller role, etc..). I still enjoy it for the music composed by John Williams, the visual effects (minus the Pixies and the Cobra which aged poorly), the Horcruxes, the acting from its caat members, the ending of the film when Hagrid returns to Hogwarts and getting a huge round of applause, and also that this film marked the final acting appearance of Richard Harris as Dumbledore before he passed away a month before the release of this film. Finally with Robbie Coltrane who played Hagrid in all films had passed away two years ago, the last scene hits differently right now and as Harry said it himself _"There is no Hogwarts without you, Hagrid."_

I would have to agree, especially with the lack of Hermione standing out as one of the key reasons I slighty prefer the first movie to this one. But definitely a movie I really enjoyed, and the tone of the mystery was excellent. RIP to Richard Harris and Robbie Coltrane, two incredible artists

@@nickreacts6394 Agreed and as much as I enjoyed Michael Gambon (also RIP) as Dumbledore in the third film onwards, Richard Harris performance as Dumbledore was hands down my favorite no question. I’m very excited for _Prisoner of Askaban_ as it’s without a doubt one of the best _Harry Potter_ films by far and my personal favorite by far.

The Harry Potter scores were composed by John Williams (1-3), Patrick Doyle (4), Nicholas Hooper (5 & 6) and Alexandre Desplat (7 & 8).
