Things Everyone Ignores In The Devil Wears Prada

Ойын-сауық

Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada is one of those characters we find ourselves rooting for despite how despicable she is. This likability is pretty much inevitable when Streep finds herself playing a villain, and the movie is rounded out by an exquisite cast, including Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci. The characters are so likable that it’s easy to ignore the strange things that occur in the comedy-drama.
It's been more than a decade since the film came out, so there are a few things that haven't aged too well. Here are some things that everyone ignores in The Devil Wears Prada.

Sumida Ryogoku She didn’t intend to apply there. She talked to someone in the human resource department of the publishing company, who, by the sound of it, was responsible for directing potential candidates to any number of different magazines. She probably hoped for an opening in a magazine about politics or stuff and was offered either some automobile magazine or runway. Not sure, if, in the real world, you would then be sent straight up for an interview, I admit, but I think, we can allow for some artistic leeway there 😉

She was hired because Nigel said "who is that sad little person, are we doing a before and after piece I don't know about?" Miranda wasn't going to hire her at all until that point - she shoos her out with "that's all", and then as Andi is leaving the building Emily comes for her - right after Nigel said his line. the point being that Fashion can and does change anything and anyone, it has a profound effect despite some people saying it's irrelevant and they're not that into fashion. That's why at the end of the movie when Andi has gone back to her former self, Miranda let's out the little smirk and chuckle as she is watching Andi walking down the street back as her former self. It's the entire base of the movie - the DEVIL wears Prada.

I agree, Nigel's comment may have moved Miranda to hire Andi as an interesting challenge. Miranda then became secretly fond of Andi and enjoyed watching her grow as a direct result of Fashion, Miranda's life passion. Miranda did say in that drive through Paris scene, just before Andi quit, that Andi reminded Miranda of herself. The end scene: Miranda sees Andi across the street, back in her element, definitely more stylish, confident and ready for the world than before the position with Runway. Miranda in the privacy of her car allowed herself for a moment to ponder that sight of Andi, lean back with satisfaction and smile with pleasure. In the end, Andi received that wonderfully "Miranda" endorsement "...she was a disappointment...and you'd be a fool not to hire her!". I love this movie!

Forcing me to read that was a waste of my time. I did watch the film. I know who the character is modeled after. So it's painfully obvious she had staff. One thing she did not have was a friend. By the end of the film, it was clear she saw Andy as one. Miranda's character even helped Andy in her career after Andy proved she lacks loyalty. The one thing that makes her different from Miranda. And instead of trying to foster that relationship, Andy simply waves at her like a chump after dumping on Miranda's invested time, resources, and personal confidence (as she had done her parents). Creating a woke reason to be a skag in Paris when she realized she was WORSE than Miranda. To now she had misjudged Miranda. Instead of changing her world view, possibly admitting she was wrong, she stuck the course of a narrow minded, petulant, and self important child. You can pretend I'm wrong, but the original point stands.

@Theodore Frazier Sometimes when you sign up for something you get more than you expected. Again. Miranda attached herself to Andy in the film. That was very clear. She even thought Andy cared about her. No one else did. Do I believe in sacrificing self indefinitely with no return. No. But Miranda addressed Andy as Andy and finally "us" in the film. That tells me she thought very highly of Andy. Even considered her a possible friend. Certainly a protege. Not some simple assistant.

  • @carolinesa91
    @carolinesa914 жыл бұрын

Miranda hired Andy because she's different from all the other girls. In a way, she saw the same ambition and will she has herself in Andy. And this proved to be true, because when Andy really worked hard, she was the best assistant Miranda had. She transformed herself and was able to go from super dull and lost to a stylish woman because she set this goal to herself. And this leads to the second point. It wasn't Nigel's help with the clothes, but what he said before that: Andy wasn't really trying. She was all the time fighting and sabotaging herself with her preconceptions about fashion and fashion magazines. It's when she sees that fashion is something more for some people, when she sees that it's a passion, an art, that she commits to be part of that world. She stops fighting.

I wanted to be a planner for years before I beame one. I grew up learning it from my dad. He was eventually proud of me. At first he said "Don't go into that." Years later, I asked him why and he said that he thought that with my quiet personality, I would never make it. My mum loved the story of Sally Thorson, who had been an underling. My dad had his typical expectation of a woman, that whe would barely be able to do it, and was later surprised when she became a Planning Director herself. She likely had learned some things from him. In Joy's generationof planners. I don't know the details, but when my dad was dying in the hospital, he spent months of daily conversations and convinced a young male nurse to go back to school and become (I think) a doctor. He did that throughour his life. Maybe Joy is like my Dad?

I think you’ve just bought into media stereotypes and made it your schema, which makes your reflection wholly inaccurate and unnecessarily condescending. This movie is just that: a movie. It’s entertainment, a business in which people with money and power produce things to bring them even more money and power. You watch it and take it with a grain of salt. If you’re looking for authenticity, rom-coms are probably not the best source. Seems like that should just be understood.

Nate was not right. Didn't think so then and especially don't now. I remember at the time being confused by so many facets of the film. Like the message it was trying to push was counterintuitive. I thought Andy discovered more about herself and what she could do while at Runway. And her transformation was a good thing. She took her work more seriously. She grew to respect the industry and the pressure involved. Whether that's fashion or any other field, that's a good lesson to learn and carry forward. And, it's always great to look your best. It gives you more confidence. More swagger. She worked at a place where she could dress spectacularly and not cost her much. Of course, she should take advantage of that. Oh, and her going to Paris instead of Emily? Why was Emily all of a sudden so, "you sold your soul for fashion"?!!! Bitch, what?!!! It's understandable that Emily is upset that she can't go to Paris, but she had to know that was going to be the case holed up in the hospital and of course, Andy would be the one to go in her stead. But, they try to sell it like this great moral dilemma. It was a script-manufactured conflict. Not actual conflict. LOVE this movie, but for reasons the filmmakers did not intend.

You could move into a place, becoming a roommate to the original tenant, and then the original tenant moves out, as long it had been your official residence for more then six month's , and there was no clause in the lease agreement preventing roommates or sub-leasing then you became the beneficiary the rent control. Miranda, when doing the monologue "destroying" Andy about the flight she couldn't get, explains hiring Andy as a leap of risk in trying something new. If she is a legend, she always take risks. And about Andy's looks, a little line at the end gives us a hint that all her looks where put together by Nigel except the one she dresses to meet Christian (which is the one Nigel praises her for putting together alone. Miranda was much moreso mad at herself than Andy- however, she can’t possibly admit this to herself because the reason she’s upset with herself is for putting her work above her kids/family. Yet if she didn’t do that, she couldn’t have ever become Miranda Priestly in the first place. This is revealed most of all in the scene where Andy is tasked to leave the Runway book at Miranda’s house, and ends up being seen by Miranda while she’s in the midst of an argument with her husband. I’d recommend you go watch that scene again (I’m sure it’s on YT) and listen to what the husband is saying - because he’s talking about the very night that Miranda was demanding Andy find a flight during a hurricane. And it’s noteworthy, to say the least, that Miranda and her husband get divorced very shortly afterwards.

Because people who have money are used to having people do whatever they ask and can be stupid. I used to work for a high-end interior design fabric company. I dealt with the showrooms, but sometimes, the designers would get us directly. I had one get me one time and wanted to know about getting a fabric overnighted from Europe. She could not grasp that it was late afternoon EST (US) meaning that it was late evening in Italy where the fabric was, so the company was closed and would not get the order until the next morning when my European counterpoint went to work. The designer also could not comprehend that coming from Europe, it had to go through customs and that they could hang onto the fabric for as long as they wanted to clear it and did not have to answer to me. Telling her that orders were 3-5 business days but sometimes showed up in two didn't make her happy. I had to repeat myself several times and finally ended up saying, "Italy is closed. No one is there to get the order. They are closed." I really don't know if she was the stupid one in this or if she had a rich client breathing down her neck being an ass. My guess is the latter.

It’s not unrealistic. Nate is an asshole, and the movie does not noticed it, but someone selfishly trying to claim that his partner is not paying enough attention to them, suggesting she should drop her ambitions and the hard way to achieve it is not unrealistic

"Things Everyone Ignores In The Devil Wears Prada"....everyone? really? I think we all watched the movie with comprehension. This is like a rant on the movie because it irked the creator of this video. Regarding the Jarlsberg...that price is accurate because the price of food in Manhattan is way higher due to high rents. inserting footage of a 20lb wheel of Jarlsberg is misleading to your viewers. Which is odd because you addressed a high rent, so that obviously effects the price of food too! I swear this content creator has such skewed logic. Irked me getting through this.

New York is a city of extremes, Dakota DellFera. Jarlsburg chump change to some. There were still abandoned buildings with squatters in Alphabet City during this period, I think. I read that all the financially normal people who lived in Manhattan have moved to Brooklyn. An interesting theme is homeless people in New York as what happen when they closed Bellvue seems landmark. There were suddenly more homeless people, and you could notice the crazy people on the street. I would not be surprised to find that there were no homeless people in New York today and wonder where they went.

I payed attention to all of the things you've mentioned in this commentary. I also pondered exactly HOW did Andy and Nigel have time to put all of those fabulous outfits together moreover, how was there time for that complete and total makeover? We're talking hair AND makeup and all before she returned to her desk which she was told by Emily that she must remain chained to. Never the less, one of my most favorite movies.😎

The real question is, how did she get back to New York after she tossed her phone in the water. Was she gonna buy her own plane ticket for $2,000? No. She was gonna use her free ticket paid for by the magazine.. which means flying with Miranda... who she just ditched and left alone the remainder of her busy week. She was a terrible employee in that moment and shouldn't of used Miranda as a reference. Also who gets a job by saying "in the end I kindof screwed it up"? She has bad interview skills. Maybe the book explains all that better.

And I wonder which planning directors were inclined to keep going after they noticed me gone. Or hire me of the "reputation." Once the homebuilders got the list of the fax machines of all Arizoa planning departments and sent ehe a FAX specifically warning whatever random person picked up the document about me by name. Most books on finding employjment recommend against that. I once considered taking a job our of town and driving three hours each way so that I could still live with my family, but, I needed to live with them. After a while, especially with the sons.

Nate more so got irritated with her, because Andy would still try to down the job while becoming the people she claimed to hate so much. When he said “I wouldn’t care if you were out pole dancing every night, just do it with some integrity” he didn’t care what she was doing, but wanted her to stop whining to him about how terrible the job was all while becoming an awful human.

That would be the same about any professional office that had distinctive features. A government office often has metal desks. Our department had a huge air photo section where we would pull them out by hand and lay them on a table. I would imagine that is now not a feature of planning departments? Lots of maps on the walls is a big one.
