+Havok_ Inbound If you speak Spanish and spend about three months hanging out with Brazilians, without taking any lessons, you'll pretty much understand everything. You're not gonna be able to speak or let alone be fluent in the language, but you'll understand what they are saying. Portuguese and Spanish sound very similar. Brazilian people know this! And the only ones that make a big deal about it are insecure ones that want to be unique and special. Just like when you call someone the wrong nationality. For some reason they get upset but it's really no big deal.

But it's the same with portuguese br and with portuguese pt, brits and tugas, have a more slavik accent, while both brazilians and americans, because with close interaction with spanish, have a more latin accent (yeah, americans could deny this, but it is true).

I believed a lot of these sterotypes before also. I lived in Sao Paulo for three months and man what an eye opener. Did you know Brazil has the second biggest Japanese population next to Japan? I went to Liberdade many times. When Brazilians state Asian, it is immediately thought to be Japanese. By the way Brazil is the most multi ethnic country I have ever been to. They have a more relaxed immigration policies.

I'm from the United States, but I have lived in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Brazil, and to me, Brazilian culture is much different than those found in other parts of Latin America.... linguistically, musically and even in its dancing. And since Brazil is by far the largest country in Latin America, and has a very high degree of immigration from other countries, its culture manifests differently depending on what region you are in. For example, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, Bahia are very different demographically and culturally from one another. I've met many Brazilians who only understand a little Spanish and many Mexicans and Dominicans who only understand a little Portuguese. They understand the words the languages have in common, but there are hundreds of words they don't have in common and the accents are also very different. For example, if someone calls me and asks what me what I'm doing and I say "andando na rua," a Spanish speaker won't necessarily understand everything I said, because in Spanish it would be "caminando en la calle." or walking in the street. The word for street is completely different. So, when I hear people say the languages are the same thing, I also have to disagree, because I 've lived among both of those languages for a very long time, and for me, they sound very different and are expressed in different ways.

Thank you so much for this! It takes a lot of ignorance to say that Spanish and Portuguese are the same language. They do have their similarities, but the phonetics, grammar (pronouns, for instance) and spelling are different. Even the similar words between Spanish and Portuguese are pronounced differently. Most of us Brazilians get really mad if someone tries to talk to us in Spanish, because it's not our cultural identity.

Brazilian Portuguese is different than Portugal's Portuguese. The differences are immense when it comes to slang. However, the base language is pretty much the same with only a few small differences. The accentuation is also slightly different. I imagine it's just like a Spanish person speaking Spanish with someone from Latin America, the language will be fundamentally the same, with a few differences in the manner of saying words and how they're used.

Já tive debates na internet com europeus que juraram que a Gisele Bundchen é alemã, mesmo quando falei que ela tem sim ascendência alemã mas nasceu no Brasil. Talvez por isso alguns se espantem quando falamos que somos brasileiros, pra eles vale mais a origem da família. Nesse caso faria mais sentido eu dizer que sou italiano pra eles (bom, não faria tanto sentido assim pois meu pai é negro e a família deve teve portugueses também, mas aí iria complicar ainda mais as coisas XD) e pra eles não existe o conceito de pardo, existe basicamente negros e brancos!

I am brazilian, but I am a total stereotype. I am mixed-race guy who can speak spanish, i also like soccer and I absolutely love samba lol ... but I have to admit that it pisses me off when someone assume that I can speak spanish just because I am brazilian. Actually, I had to study a lot to become fluent haha

There are white, black and brown in all Latin countries. There is no Latin race but a Latin cultural identity. The Latin race that Americans think there actually are people with indigenous descent.

Unfortunately a lot of people don’t know that Brazil is the 9 biggest economy in the world, the 5th largest country in the world, the 6 largest population. The language is Portuguese ! The population are multi ethnic groups with 48% of white , 42% of mixed ethnic, 7% of black, 2% of indigenous and 1% of Asian. Brazil isn’t perfect but the people are welcoming and the country is very beautiful and not dangerous as the media likes to denigrate the country.

This video represents exactly how people talked to me when I told them I was Brazilian. Most foreigners think that all Latino American countries are the same, that they all speak the same language and have the same culture, however that is not the case. People need to start seeing things beyond stereotypes, otherwise this type of situation will always occur. I really liked the way this video portrays this issue that truly happens in real life. We get annoyed at this ignorance because the media makes Brazilians seem like a culture that is all about partying and poverty when in reality, we are much more than that. My Brazilian friends, who still live there, did not believe that foreigners such as Australians (since that is where I live), would ask me these questions. In order for you guys to believe that this is real and not just a funny video, I have been asked all of these questions since I have lived abroad. I do not fit the 'stereotypical' Brazilian girl type that many believe in. So I hope that by this video, people start to understand more that culture is much more than just the stereotypical things we know.

Sou *brasileiro* , vivo no *Rio de janeiro* na praia de *Copacabana* jogando *futebol* e dançando *samba* e falando *espanhol* , as vezes eu toco uma *bossa nova* ao pôr do sol. Quando é noite eu vou para minha casa na *floresta amazônica* montado em uma *onça pintada* enquanto *macacos* me perseguem. Chegando em *Buenos Aires* no meio da floresta, o *carnaval* começa e muitas *mulheres* aparecem dançando no *Maracanã* . Será que se eu falar isso para um gringo, ele vai desmaiar de prazer?

I recently traveled to Brazil with a group of friends. I was so embarrassed that even after being told no Spanish three taxis in a row… the entire trip… they kept trying to speak Spanish. 🤦‍♀️

Probably 99% of Brazilians who don't live in the Amazon, had never been at the forest.

People thinking Latin Americans are all tan is probably the most irritating thing for me. Sure, there is a lot people of mixed ancestry and they're pretty tan as a result, in some countries more than others, but there's plenty of white people all around. Hell, I'm Mexican and I'm whiter than most people from the US.
