On the flip side of the awkward/embarrassing equation, I have, on multiple occasions each, greeted people that I knew to be completely blind and put out my hand for a handshake, only to feel like a complete idiot when they neither saw nor shook my hand.

Not blind, but I heavily relate to the "I dont hate you, just got stuff that makes me come across as rude" vibe! I had a brain injury and people always thought I was mad at them, but no, I just was trying to hold onto my train of thought so I could feel independent and not have to ask for help to finish a mundane task. It worked out a lot better when I started introducing myself as dealing with an injury that could be misconstrued as angry, really considered a sign that said "Not mad, just thinking" for myself!

@@russelchambers5630 I really appreciate this! Maybe it would be best to just get it out in the open as soon as possible. I just feel so awkward bringing it up right when I meet someone, almost like I’m making meeting a new person all about me or something. I know that’s not the case, but I think that’s my fear.

  • @blindbutnotbroken1755

I completely sympathize. I have a degenerative genetic disorder that robbed me of my vision 10 years ago, and sometimes asking for help can be the hardest thing, especially for an independent person, but I have found through experience that being upfront and honest about it tends to avert a lot of problems you would otherwise face, it does suck having to compromise your independence and ask for help for something that you used to be able to do without any difficulty and social interaction has definitely become considerably more awkward over the years for the most part. I tend to avoid social situations exactly for that reason I do not like crowds I do not like being in public, and I find it very difficult to navigate, especially in areas where I’m not around people who know me it does take quite a lot of adjustment. My heart goes out to anyone else who is also dealing with this. It is never easy.

I always inform people that I am visually impaired rather than saying legally blind because some people don't understand that legally blind is a spectrum. It's not just totally blind and then it's awkward. For the ones who really don't understand what visually impaired means. I tell them my eyes don't work so good.

Same-o. In my case it's Posterior Vitreous Detachment, which I'd never heard of before I developed it. I explain my peripheral vision is flashes like colored lightning, and looking at things through my right eye (the worse one) is like looking through crumpled plastic wrap. I've had some interesting responses, but fortunately no negative ones.

I'm legally blind as well! The most embarrassing for me for some reason is asking for help. I second guess it, I once was doing state testing for school and I could not see what I had to type and it felt awkward shouting out "Oh I'm legally blind can... you tell me the numbers?" 😭 I felt shame and maybe that's the stigma of societies ableism but even so, it's hard to ask when I need help because honestly I'd need it all the time. I pretend to see so my parents don't make so much of an effort sometimes, because I don't want them to try and help something that probably can't be helped, which is um probably not good! I hope this makes sense, and maybe somebody can relate(?) Sorry to randomly dump this here but !!

@@Sleepy_S1mon I completely relate! Especially to pretending to see in scenarios where you really can’t just because it’s not worth it to point it out and just not wanting to ask for help unless it’s absolutely necessary. Honestly I think I’ve let that trickle into not wanting to ask for help in general unless it’s completely unavoidable even if it’s not vision related which is definitely no bueno, but I don’t want to be annoying. 🤷‍♀️

There's no shame in asking for a helping hand. Most people are kind and would do what they could to lend some aid if asked. They're probably just unaware that you could use some assistance in particular scenarios unless you bring it to their attention. Don't feel bad in asking for help. We all have different abilities, and all need some help sometimes. We're all a community and should look out for each other.

I know when I'm taking a macro dose of mushrooms I still have closed eye visuals when my eyes are closed. Either way God bless you 🙏❤. When I was addicted to heroin for 18 years I had a blind friend that was addicted for 5 years and boy I got some stories about that. He was a super cool nice guy though. Much love ❤❤

@@Sleepy_S1mon Funnily enough, yesterday when I was at the grocery store, I was doing the self checkout. A woman next to me asked me if I could read something for her, and she held out an apple. It had a sticker on it with teeny-tiny numbers. My distant vision is poor, but I can see up close very well, so I read the numbers for her to enter into the checkout till. I don't know if she has poor vision all around, or if she's farsighted and forgot her reading glasses, but I didn't judge and I just helped because she requested it. Had she not spoken up, I would've been oblivious and just walked by her while she was left to fumble with the machine. I asked if she needed any other help before I left. She said no, and then I bid her farewell and was on my way home, reminded of this comment thread here.

Dunno... as I have learned making an unasked attempt to help people feel as intrusive and crossing boundaries thing. I always help when asked and I sometines ask if someone needs help when they clearly look clueless in a situation (or they are old lady carrying groceries, for example). Some people want my help, some don't. But we should never just jump and help, because it just seems patronising and offensive. I think you can just ask for help naturally, there should be no shame involved! Just as a short woman asks me for something from a top shelf in a store, I am tall, I just give it and we are all fine. I couldn't imagine this might be embarassing for that person. We live on this world together with our different abilities and qualities so we can just... cooperate. Right?

I am like you! I am legally blind, but not blind enough for most people to know by looking at me that I’m blind and can’t really see their faces very well. I have good night vision and peripheral vision, but my central vision is gone. So, When I walk up to somebody, I often can’t tell if I’ve ever met them before. Unfortunately, I end up feeling part of neither group, either the cited or the blind.

The love of my life who I’ve been married to for 51 years has been legally blind since birth. The doctors say it is retinal scarring from prenatal toxoplasmosis. She can tell light from dark with her left eye and has less than 50% of the central vision in her right. She has learned to use the peripheral vision to cope with most of life, but even that has issues. The periphery of the retina doesn’t perceive color as well and is extra sensitive to motion which makes her startle easily. She can read if the print is big enough (thank you Kindle!) and can handle most things around the house. None of which matters a bit. We’ve been there for each other for all those years and we are still as much in love as the day I proposed.
