Thieving Neds Vandalise and Steal Next Bikes at Dowanhill Street in Partick, Glasgow in Public
Watch a bunch of feral Neds going out equipped and using a hammer to smash the locks on Next Bikes at Partick. I later noticed them all riding on Argyle Street at Finnieston with them. The Ned on the yellow wheeled bike noticed me watching them and got a bit agressive. Since there was a hammer in use I decided to move on.
Next Bike run a useful bike hire scheme in Glasgow. Recently the prices increased much to the dismay of the regular users of the service.
I have noticed that in Glasgow the majority of the bikes are being used by Neds and Junkies. They don't pay anything for them and either look for inadvertently unlocked bikes or use brute force to break the wheel locks and steal them.
The bikes get discarded and / or vandalised leading to higher costs for everyone. A similar scheme has already been withdrawn in Edinburgh due to vandalism and theft. Other cities such as Cardiff have also had bikes withdrawn.
This bike theft crime seems to go largely unchallenged by both the public and the police.

We are such a small country with a tiny population. I don’t understand why the scummy demographic is so over-represented out there on the streets, making us all look bad. What we can do, as a society, to keep these rats off the streets, distracted and/or sedated? I don’t mean jail. That costs a lot of money and it doesn’t solve the problem. Scottish neds have been around for what feels like forever, refusing to evolve or learn, perpetually stuck in the early 90s with their weird sub-culture.

In the context of Scottish slang, a "ned" refers to a young person, typically male, who is perceived as antisocial or engaging in delinquent behavior. The term is often associated with someone who dresses in a particular style, such as wearing tracksuits or sportswear, and may be involved in activities like vandalism or petty crime. Neds are sometimes compared to "chavs" in England or "hooligans" in other parts of Europe. They often have a reputation for being loud, aggressive, and disrespectful, though this is a stereotype and doesn't apply to everyone who might be labeled as such.

Same in glasgow, I think the guy recording noticed that aswell because he seemed to eject himself from the situation after he was asked that.
for the record bro those bikes are a lifeline for a lot of people myself all through first year of uni included People are gonna steal bikes but heyho they make em cheap and shit anyway and they got trackers. If you go to the nextbike depot at bike for good they are constantly repairing them. I hope these guys don't ruin it for the rest of us; A lot of people use those bikes just to get around they are brilliant; Way better than escooters.
The pathetic part is that the thieves would draw more attention from the plod if they were making fun of a bloke in a frock.....
