this was a very close but unspectacular fight, santos landed the harder shots but magomed controlled the octagon more and wreslted more in the later rounds to get the win, by no means did ankalaev dominate thiago both played it safe

My dude you need rewatch that fight. He rocks him one time that whole fight in the 2nd round. Magomed countered majority of Santos’ strikes and pieced up his body. He landed a few good head kicks throughout the fight as well as legs kicks. Santos landed more leg kicks I’ll give you that because that’s all he could consistently land. He blitz more at one point but landed maybe one strike. There was a power punch that Anklalaev threw in the 4th that evidently landed because Santos wobbled but I didn’t see it and still haven’t been able to catch it. Magomed landed more damaging shots, more body shots, controlled the octagon, countered more, and capped it off with wrestling. With all of that Magomed still showed tons of respect for Santos hit power so yes I agree both played it safe. Magomed still in the end was the better fighter. He is disciplined but I feel he showed a little too much respect for the hit power. The hit power made him not go for the wrestling until Santos was tired and that was made apparent after Santos showed how tired he was. Not quite domination but you still knew who won the fight.

The rules state damageas the number one priority. Controlling the octagon doesn't mean anything. Wrestling doesn't mean anything. If you said santos did more heavier strikes, then he is suppose to win. That's a very inconsistent breakdown.

@@biym6969 ummmm wrestling kind of does matter my dude it’s that’s the kind of fight that it becomes. Takedowns get you points especially if you keep them down. If you are the one who held the dominant position for majority of the round that round will go to you. It’s only doesn’t matter if the fight was a stand up fight for the majority of that round. Although I do disagree with this guy though. He only says that because Santos was able to drop Magomed ONE TIME the whole fight. Magomed clearly wobbled Santos on very round including the round he got dropped in. The damage was still being done more on Magomed part

Thiago has one of the most dangerous left in the sport, he should have finished Glover but sadly he couldn't what an exciting fighter though he brings it !!

Thiago played it way too safe in this fight, he needs to go back the the fighter he was early on in his Glver fight and pre-Jones. He may not be as explosive as he once was after those knee surgeries, but he's still more explosive than pretty much everyone else in the division, and demonstrated with that one that rocked Magomed in this one, or the one early in round 1 against Glover. He's a very technically skilled striker too, but it's that devastating power that makes him still one of if not the the number 1 scarriest striker at 205. Magomed landed way more shots, but none were as hefty as the the to biggest ones from Santos, and it was obvious that Magomed was doing his best to stay outa Thiago's range and settle for minor distance striking. Ultimately i think both guys are the two most underrated LHW's right now, and even though Santos has had a string of crappy performances, i still think he has what it takes to get back to number 1 contender status, maybe even champ if he gets his shit together. I think his next fight against Hill will determine whether he's one of the best LHW's who has simply been in a slump since defeating - oh sorry, that's right - I meant losing to Jon Jones, (yes, im one of those guys who thought he shoulda gotten the decision win over Jones), or if he is a ading star who simply doesn't have enough in him to try to make one more run for the tittle. As for Magomed, I think he's already the number 1 contender if he beats Anthony Smith, (i love Smith, but he most certainly is a fading star who just doesn't have enough in him to get back to the championship fight), and knowing where Smith is in terms of his skills, his athletic ability and so forth - I frankly don't see Magomed having that much trouble putting Lion heart away. Hell, he beat Santos who is currently a significantly better fighter than Smith is. And Jiri has a very unorthodox fighting style, but can be rocked easier than many of the top LHW guys, so even though that style is right now his best weapon - it also could lead to him getting ko'd if and when he goes against powerful strikers like Magomed, Thiago, Johnny Walker, or Jamahal Hill. Which is why i legit see Magomed being able to be the first to lay Jiri out and get the belt. Right now he's gotta get through Anthony Smith though.

Agreed but to defeat jiri he has to be violent and technical at the same time because jiri does not stop coming forward and he is not easy to put down as you have seen him against Dominick Reyes

@@papatelenor2964 True. That said, in that Reyes fight - Reyes landed a number of shots and stunned Jiri a couple of times. As unpredictable as Jiri is, the way he fights with his hands so low, he's gotten rocked a number of times, so what is currently one of his best weapons is also potentially one of his biggest weaknesses if he goes up against someone who hits really hard. Tho Dominick is a pretty powerful striker no doubt, he definitely isn't on Thiago's or Magomed's level in that regard. However, that's presuming Thiago is capable of performing close to how he looked pre-Jones fight. He's getting up there in age to boot, so if he ever wants to have a shot at the title again he'd been start this weekend with his Hill fight. Hill pretty damn good too, so hopefully it'll be an interesting fight, they both are a couple of my favorite fighters. Now that Magomed got through Smith, he definitely deserves his shot, and they better not pass him up for Jan. Jan's great too, but he's already been champ once, let Magomed get his shot, and have Glover or Jan fight the winner, or have Jan and Glover fight eachother and the winner of that fights the winner of Magomed and Jiri

If you aren't and ur genuinely askin me, yeah Islam is gonna be extremely difficult for Oleviera, but that guy has seemed to improve with every tittle defense, and strangely enough i think he should do everything to stay on his feet, because that's where Islam just isn't refined yet. And yeah, too bad my prediction on Santos making a comeback was obliterated two weekends ago lol. He did actually look pretty darn good much of the fight, but he gassed bad toward the end. Which is weird cuz he's also had such great stamina/conditioning! It's sad really, i really hoping he could get back to his old self or atleast close to that level, but it's obvious now after that Hill fight, he just isn' t the same guys from pre - Jon Jones fight, a real bummer. I still think Magomed be a huge problem for Jiri, (or whomever has the belt by the time he gets in tittle shot).

Can someone point out the power punch in the 4th round Magomed landed? He did it right before he chose to wrestle and Santos wobbled so I know he landed it but I can’t catch it. Magomed is that fast, precise, and crisp with his boxing. This is the guy that I would pick hands down to piece Jon Jones up. Jiri would finish Jon Jones too I’m my opinion because he can work Jones to exhaustion. And I would pick Magomed to beat Jiri. Jiri will get countered an KO by Magomed because his pressure will be used against him. He will keep coming but one of the counters will drop him maybe even a head kick.

@@victorllv9697 I agree with you that Magomed is the answer to him but make no mistake, the style Jiri has is actually very effective. It may not looking like it but Jiri gets hit a lot less then we realize. His striking is quite precise too which is why he can end the fight at any moment. Magomed is his match though and the X factor on this fight is the discipline. Magomed from what I see is more disciplined so he will make less mistakes than Jiri. From where I sit if this fight goes to the ground that’s all Magomed. Jiri is quite good at surviving on the ground to get back up though as he showed against Glover. This fight more than likely will be a striking match because Magomed seems to like to keep us standing. He can wrestle but he tends to be a bit more selective with his wrestling rather than it being his game plan. Jiri is just a striker through and through all though he can get a submission on the ground. Also Jiri style can make exhaust Magomed. It’s a real 50/50 fight with those two.

The Dagestan and Chechnya wrestling has been overhyped because of Khabib who never faced an elite wrestler. Tibua was the one guy with elite wrestling and he stuffed 14 of 14 takedowns and took Khabib down twice. Askarov, Khazmat and Ankalaev as they go up against elite talent we see they can't manhandle them. Khabib wouldn't of manhandled Covington, Gsp or Chandler
