It will be interesting to see how Skimpy fairs as the spring and summer role around. She looks well nourished here but likely because she was still getting some milk from mum. At least she knows how to forage and with berries and new shoots coming up she will get something. Like you, I am all for the underdog, hence my love for Tiny, Tina, Knotty and the others who have to work so hard to stay alive. At times like this it might be better to be a part of a smaller troop. Maybe there is more to go around with less competition. I know you do what you can for them, Arroz and we are all appreciative of that and thank you for the videos.

What would they do without you? I agree they aren’t losers. They are survivors! Thank you for being you!*

Arroz if you could, It would be very helpful to make an educational video about their hierarchy and explaining how it works. Like who would be next in line to take alpha position, how rank works, the consequences of lower rank going above higher rank etc etc. I would love to learn about it. And there is not a video on youtube yet that really explains it

I have thought something like that would be useful as well. And also what exactly does it take for a low ranking female to move up in rank ? I know that having girls will help but how many baby girls does it take?

The number of primates in the area is so large that most of the natural food gets foraged away as soon as it blossoms. So the government planted even more natural fruit bearing plants for them but it still wasnt nearly enough yet to sustain them. So they have the government approved feeders. Then this is also one reason they started the neutering program. Then realized that it was working to well and stopped it I believe.

But she has had several infants that have grown up. Every mother has a ‘last’ baby and while it’s poignant it’s also natural. The population has far outstripped the resources to provide for them. The entire troop and it’s surrounding neighbors require human intervention to fed them during the winter months. Logically, reducing troop size through population control is a humane why to address the problem.

Any thoughts on what is keeping such a large troop together? As you say it sounds like it is the largest ever documented. It's quite an instinct for a troop once it reaches a certain number of members that there will be either some disagreement among alphas or actually there will be alpha that some gravitate to and not others and you start seeing a split in leadership and then the two groups seem to drift apart and are eventually 2 troops with close friendships but definitely separate. There are a lot of documented reasons why a troop with split when it gets to a certain size and the abundance of forage area and the amount of food is usually a main reason, and even with troops that have regular feeding programs they still will tend towards separating when there are a lot of higher ranking members and some that are starting to step into the position of alpha. Its even assumed, when there is no other reason for part of a troop to take off that it maybe that the alphas just know how many they can look after and when there are just to many to manage they are happy to split. And this happens even in troops that are fed daily and have obviously no need to split if it was just all about food. Also, in this troop once the higher ranking members are full and move off will they let the lower ones be given food and not care or do they come back it food is then given to lower ranks and take what they can hold even is already full or will they just be happy with what they have and let the lower ranking members have what comes next?

Arroz Marisco For these low ranking ones, is there not any natural food for them? If there were no feeders, would the troup starve? Since there are feeders, doesn't that leave a little of their natural food so that low ranking can eat the berries or leaves in the forest or is there just not enough of their natural food for any of them? Will they eat bugs and small animals?

I'd venture a guess that Skimpy picked up MAYBE 30 specks of something during this video. Of that I would guess that maybe 1% was actual food. You gotta wonder how much dirt, skin cells, and poop they actually eat in a day. A few feet away there was grass and leaves and bark, the stuff they used to survive on. Now they'll pick up pounds of dirt and whatever else because they'd rather do that in between handouts. It's sad but human feeding has brought about the absolute necessity of human feeding for the survival of the current generation. That's kind of sad to think about. Don't get me wrong, I'm genuinely happy to see them NOT giving up, to see them surviving and Skimpy appears to even be thriving. I know their lives aren't actually as bad as the piano music implies there, thanks Arroz, but being that close to the edge of survival, sucks! It's a life of toil and sadness. Which are the ones better off, the ones who struggle to survive their whole lives or the ones who didn't make it? Most people will say, "well the ones that made it OF COURSE!". Most people don't have any idea what it's like to "just survive", to be that close to the edge. I've been close more times that I'd like to admit, but that being said, even I don't have a clue what it's like to be right on that edge for a whole lifetime.

Elizabeth Rogers I believe this is Skinny and Skimpy although Tina was high on the “Arroz Monkey Hill Feeding Plan” so my guess is she is very near by. She knows the drill as does Martha and a few select others. You can tell by the way they look at arroz, they have that wanting in their eyes. Hey! I have a question!! So we all see the one young, healthy looking monkey up on fence post. Do you all think she’s one of the low ranking members too or wonder if the troops leaves “Eyes or lookout” to watch the bottom troop members?? I doubt it but just a thought. They should not be "waiting" to get food anyway. They are wild animals. They don't need to be pitied or fed. They should be able to fend for themselves. People should not have started feeding them in the first place. Human intervention/interfering in wild animals' lives does them no good. It makes them weak and unable to fend for themselves. Smh.
