    If this took place in the modern era, I'd probably dislike Lady Featherington more. But, its not and she has these things to contend with: 1. All of her children are daughters, so she has an obligation to try and marry them to eligible men so they can be provided for in their lives. 2. She has the additional burden now of Marina (who is also pregnant). If Marina doesn't marry quickly and discreetly, her condition will be discovered and Lady Featherington's biological daughters' reputations will be tarnished (the whole family's really), thus limiting their prospects. 3. She carries most of the emotional burden of doing all of this because her husband is completely apathetic and detached from the daily goings on of his household. He reminds me a lot (though less charming) of Mr. Bennett from P&P. Come to think of it, Lady Featherington reminds me of Mrs. Bennett too.

Lady Featherington is trying to pair her with a man who would 100% look the other way when they figure out the baby isn't theirs because they need an heir or just don't care for some reason. While marina is trying to complain about the men yet she isn't in a spot to be complaining in.

    For the upper classes and the nobility in this time, it was essential to maintain the family line. So the oldest son (who inherited the title) had a duty to get married and produce an heir. And it was essential that the daughters marry, so they would have a place to live and a financially secure future. (They couldn't get jobs, unless they were reduced to being a "companion" in some wealthy house.) Unmarried daughters would be in the humiliating position of being an "extra" person in some relative's house. Younger sons had a narrow selection of life paths: a military officer, a clergyman, or the better sort of lawyer was about it. They were also hypocritical about sexual experience: girls had to be "pure" at all cost (they were even "compromised" if someone saw them in a secluded spot with a man and nobody else -- we saw this in episode 1). Though boys were theoretically supposed to be pure as well, it was understood that many upper-class young men might carry on with women of a lower social class, a prostitute or a mistress. People might roll their eyes at it, but it was tolerated as long as it was kept private and quiet. Occasionally one of these secret women might get pregnant (as with Lord Berbrooke), and if so the man was expected to be responsible and quietly make arrangements for the welfare of the mother and child (as Berbrooke did not -- that was his disgrace).

    Fun Fact: In case you didn't know, the bridgerton kids were named alphabetically from oldest to youngest. They are 7 so A-H. This series is just amazing. It was based on a novel and the novel had 9(i think) books and has the story of all the bridgertons. Daphne being in the first one and entitled The Duke And I. 2nd Book is Anthony's story (The Viscount who loved me), 3rd will be Benedict (I think the series will be released in this year) 4th will be Colin and Pen and 5th will be Eloise, 6th will be Franchesca, 7th will be Hyacinth and 8th will be Gregory. The 9th is entitled Bridgerton Happy Ever After. The books are amazing just as the series is. I love everything about this show and novel. Its amazing to see the Bridgerton's named from A-H in the order. Aint it? Loved your reaction as alwaysss!!! Keep grinding!

    My friends who take a more open approach to sex when it comes to their kids, watched Bridgerton with their daughter who was 9 at the time. During the scene where Simon is talking to Daphne, she stopped everything and said loudly, "WAIT!!! You can have SEX with YOURSELF!?!" Not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet, but the reason they don't know about sex is why they are so valued for a "perfect match". A pure woman doesn't know anything about sex until after she is married, and is usually told right before the wedding night. It's no wonder so many men cheated on their wives. And that is the difference why Antony can't marry the opera singer, she's not a Virgin, she will always only be his mistress.

  • @stefannydvorak7919

    @stefannydvorak7919

    Anthony can't marry the opera singer because they are from a different social class, not because of her virginity or lack of.

  • @doodle7847

    @doodle7847

    2 ай бұрын

    @@stefannydvorak7919 I think it would be both. Not marrying a Lady of high class (which usually would indicate she's also virgin, if not a widow) would bring shame to the family and make his sisters ineligible for good marriages, especially since he's the highest born male and running the house. Appearances were everything back then. It's the same reason why in Pride and Prejudice Darcy helped get Lydia married to Wickham because the rest of the sisters would have been ruined socially.

  • @stefannydvorak7919

    @stefannydvorak7919

    2 ай бұрын

    @@doodle7847 I mean, virginity plays a part in it, but class is the most important. Unless they had a child out of wedlock,it wasn’t that easy to prove that a woman wasn’t a virgin. It still isn’t. And if Anthony was the man who took that opera singer’s virginity, it would be even more acceptable for him to marry her. Like you said, Darcy made Whickam marry Lydia after deflowering her. Throughout history, there’s been way more married non-virgin women than we expect. The thing with Bridgerton is that it’s a modern day show based on a book created by a modern day woman. The actual cultural nuances of the Regency era aren’t well captured because she didn’t live through it. For example, I don’t think Daphne and Simon would’ve actually been forced into marriage for a kiss. For sex, yes, but not for a kiss.

  • @doodle7847

    @doodle7847

    2 ай бұрын

    @stefannydvorak7919 Yes, this is just a work of fiction. However, I do think the author is right in understanding the culture of this British time period. They don't have to marry over the kiss, The Duke even tries to duel with Antony over it, but family honor is the biggest issue. These women were raised to not know anything, and a witnessed kiss is death to their whole family's high standing in society. Daphne herself doesn't fully understand what sex is until her mother tells her (quite terribly) on her wedding day. Of course there were many unmarried women who weren't virgins, but if you were highborn it was imperative you stayed one until your wedding night. Even a whisper of doubt from society would ruin you because you shouldn't know anything about it. They put such an emphasis on how an unmarried woman shouldn't be alone in the company of a man who isn't family, because a woman's word means diddly squat in their world.The brothers all know what sex is, but don't tell their sisters because they know it would hurt their future match. They also know they are expected to marry a woman like this, which is mostly why Antony can't marry the opera singer, it would dishonor the family and make everyone else ineligible for a lot of matches. I also highly doubt Antony took the opera singer's virginity. 😂 I was mostly pointing this all out because the reactors don't understand how Daphne doesn't know about masturbation at her age, and it's because she shouldn't know about it. It's what makes her so desirable, she's a truly rich, highborn pure virgin.

    @@doodle7847 Again, this is a modern day person’s interpretation of Georgian England, not the actual cultural climate. For example, Lord Byron was extremely popular back then, yet he had multiple public sex scandals. He was a poet who was particularly popular amongst women. And they loved to gossip about his scandalous life. Contrary to what Bridgerton depicts, reading was one of the most popular activities of the ladies at the time. One of the most popular form of novels at the time was the gothic novel. These books were dark and often erotic and regency women loved them. They were selling like hot pancakes. One of the most popular at the time was “The Monk” and it was highly sexual. Jane Austen’s “Northanger Abbey” explores this topic extremely well. Asides from Lord Byron, another popular author of the time was Le Marquis de Sade. His books were all about sex. To the point that his last name gave birth to a form of sexual kink: sadism. Authors who actually lived through that era depict a society that is strict, yes, but way less strict than what Bridgerton depicts. Sex education of the daughters was the duty of mothers. One can be educated about sex and still be a virgin. To not even know that sex is supposed to happen on your wedding night was not a common thing. In “Pride and Prejudice”, Kitty and Lydia openly flirt with multiple men and don’t face social repercussions. Lydia only gets her honour compromised when she goes to live alone with a man, hoping from inn to inn without being married. Multiple Jane Austen novels depict sex scandals. Of course, there’s “Pride and Prejudice”, but there’s also “Northanger Abbey”, “Sense and Sensibility”, “Mansfield Park” and “Emma”. Jane Austen was a woman of the era, the daughter of a cleric(leader of a church) and she knew enough about sex to write about it in her popular novels!

    11:25 The thing is, in those days to be an actress, an opera singer or any kind of performer, it was sort of implied that you also had to have a patron or to be someone's mistress at the same time. Women only started performing on the stage instead of all the roles being played by men either dressed as men or dressed as women in the time of Charles the second in England, and when that happened the women basically had to have a side job as prostitutes as well. That's why it was so shaming to be an actress for the next few hundred years, to be on the stage was as good as being "a low, brazen hussy". There was some level of shame for a man to be called an 'actor' as well I think.

    FYI there are eight books in the series that this show comes from because there are eight bridgerton siblings each of them gets their own love story and they begin to set them up and show a little more of each of them the seasons before their story. Anthony story is next and it's a lot of fun. You can understand Anthony and Simon better if you know a little bit about the system that they live under. The king of England gave out the first title to a non-royal person in the 1300 s and there are still people holding titles in the UK today. Along with the title such as Duke, Earl, Baron or Viscount which is Anthony's title, they were awarded land and property, maybe a castle was built or a massive estate. These titles were usually awarded to people who had served the king or queen, done something special for them. The lands that were entitled, given directly from the king or queen were to stay in the family, passed down to the eldest son because women had very little rights at that time and they were not allowed to inherit. One way they maintain those estates was by farming. These were a huge land grants. They would also often have a home in the country and by home I mean and a state, and a home in London for THE SEASON. . The only other responsibilities they had was the men holding the titles were expected to sit in the House of Lords and represent their people and their districts in the government. They had tenants who lived on the land who did the farming for them so it was a system that benefited both because if the Lord took good care of his tenants and they worked the land. Now here's where the marriage Mart comes in. Another way they could advance was through marriage.. so they're looking for someone who might have a title that would help improve their station and help them make more money or they're looking for a woman to marry who has a dowry, a marriage gift of money that's going to come to them. That's what Nigel Berberick wanted Daphne's money and status. There's a hierarchy to the titles with Duke being the highest under the royalty and the vicount being under the Duke which means Anthony was just below Simon in rank That's why Nigel said to Simon you don't need her I need her. The Bridgerton family has done well so Anthony doesn't necessarily have to marry someone with money but he would want to marry someone who's titled because that's just socially how they did things. Daphne would have a very large dowry so there could be people wanting to marry her just for the money but likely she's not going to have that problem. Some Lords we're just like any other human they had bad habits like drinking and gambling and they lost some of their lands and so they need their children to make marriage is that will benefit them. Simon tells his father he is no longer going to carry on that line so everything that family has owned for generations will be given back to the crown and the king or queen will own it, which is really bad for the people who might depend on them. The system as it existed then pretty much fell apart when Britain went from being an agricultural to a manufacturing Nation just like everyone else did in the late early 1900s. There are still British aristocracy but many of them have had to sell their estates because they were just too expensive to manage and maintain. Second and third Brothers had more freedom of choice. They were expected to go in the military, become a teacher a lawyer or even become a clergyman as we've already seen Anthony wants to paint but that is not as socially acceptable as other things for those of the aristocracy to do when they are not the firstborn son. Sorry about how long this turned out to be but I hope it gives you some insight as you go forward with this series. Where are anxiously awaiting seasons 3

    A little edit, woman could inherit certain titles and certain lands (in fact a better thought is that a dowry is basically a woman's inheritance as a dowry was not extra money for the husband per say, but money given to the couple to be used in the event of the husbands death). Its a combo of factors, but where you hear woman not being able to inherit is when they tie up an estate in a) the title holder. So if the title was only allowed to go to a male heir, they wouldn't want the estate to not go with the title holder or B) the property is entailed. Because while woman could inherit, they were not allowed to handle their own business with the money/property. So by leaving the bulk of the money to male heirs, you can give the women in the family a pay out of money (like 30 pounds a year etc) from the family estate without giving it over to her husband, who could possibly loose all the money you meant to give your daughter. There were rules about governing someone else money, but it was less strict with husbands. Then it was for uncles or cousins. In regards to Nigel saying he needs Daphne. He doesn't need her dowry, Anthony says he looked into him and he's not in debt. What he needs is Daphne's connections. Because even within the landed gentry, there were tiers of influence. The higher influence you have, the better gentleman's clubs you could join, the more opportunities in investments etc. Think the featheringtons compared to the Bridgertons. The featheringtons don't have as great as a social sphere as the Bridgeton and they are neighbors. Daphne, as a sister of a Viscount is pretty high up in the social sphere and would, as you said elevate his status. In terms of second or third brothers, it really depends on what they were able to be given by their families. If the family was poorer, they would 100% be sent to clergy or another high status occupation that way they won't be broke. If the family was wealthy enough, like the Bridgertons are. They would be Given some property and become landed gentry themselves, but they won't be titled. A lot of the landed gentry was not titled. But by given the land they were not expected to be "working" rather using investments and income from the land to feed themselves and their families.

    I have actually always thought Lady Featherington was... Right. It's hard to admit, sure, because she's doing something very sketchy and dishonest, but (!) Marina is considered like her ward at the moment. Like a daughter. In this world the show built, by the standards that are set in it, Marina's situations could be fatal to the reputation of her 3 daughters. She would be looked as an irresponsible mother/ guardian for allowing it, no one would blame lord Featherington.. . This double standard world would put all the shame on Lady Featherington and her daughters. And Marina IS irresponsible and young. She and her George did something they shouldn't have in this world, and they do not have the ability to deal with it on their own. George is not even THERE. So time is of the essence. And Lady Featherington is the most distasteful and not classy woman in the ton, but she is doing the necessary right thing, unfortunately, in order to save Marina AND her daughters' reputations. Maybe the actual men choises are a bit much, but she is distasteful, we have already established.... I have always thought she's one of the best characters. We don't get so much screen time with her for nothing. Her mind is super interesting to me. Very attention loving, power chasing, smart and vain woman. I love her!

    Been loving your reactions, there are 8 books if I’m not mistaken, one book for each Bridgerton child and their story. So each season focuses on one child as the main protagonist (season 1 being daphne) while they set up the backstory for the other children.

    While Lady Featherington is far from my favourite character, we should not just paint her as a villain. Her job is to take care of the children in her care, and for her Marina is pregnant without the father being present in the picture. She is trying to marry her off so that marina will be taken care of. Though I don’t particularly agree with her faking the letter, she is trying to make the best of the situation to ensure Marina has a future for her and her baby. I wish she’d have just sat down with her nicely and told her instead of scheming though. I think her heart is in the right place ,I guess for her the ends justify the means.
