I love the change of pace in this scene. When Paulie notices the apartment is in a mess, he ask Charlie what is going on, forgetting all about his thumb. He gives him a lesson on how to treat women. Then he re-realizes his thumb is gone. Outstanding acting.

I saw this one, on video tape about 25 years ago at my dad's place in CA. I fell in love with Mickey Rourke and have loved him ever since. Eric Roberts should have been, at least, nominated for an Oscar for this one. He just captures the character of Paulie so well. The performances are incredible.

This is the kind of script an actor waits his whole life to try to nab a part in. And these guys knew it, they played this absolutely brilliantly. This scene alone is beyond a masterclass in characterization and performance from both. Roberts was absolutely brilliant I can't imagine being on the set after scenes like this are filmed, bet you the crew was absolutely silent after these takes, it's brilliant.

Years ago I performed this scene with a senior student in college. Brad Flores played Charlie and I played Paulie. The head of the theater dept wasn't impressed, but our fellow students LOVED it. This was in 1986. Even then us youngsters knew how important this movie was. Still impresess that Brad somehow managed to get us a punching bag, that had to be hung from the catwalk😉😊.

1:18 on, Eric Roberts is unreal, the drug addled, pain ridden, half goofy mood swings and near incoherence. Awesome. How did he not get his Oscar for this role? Then they robbed him of his Oscar for Runaway Train. He and Voight both should've won for that.
