An excellent review and comparison of these "budget" EDC's! I don't have the Pyrite, but do have a few other CJRB EDC's, and can say that they are generally of high quality, i.e., Talla, Feldspar, and Crag, to name a few. And their parent company Artisan Cutlery, makes the most robust, beast of a folder I've ever used, the Proponent! So, yes, that weak detente would bother me too. Currently, my "Go To" EDC is the Vosteed Raccoon, which, IMHO, is made with very high-quality components, is very solid and robust, with zero blade play, rock, etc. And most importantly, the 14C28N blade is extremely sharp and robust, especially at a $60 price point!

Had to buy one cuz everyone was saying how great it is. I received mine and it wouldn’t even open. Superman wouldn’t have been able to open it. Sent it back and received the second one. It would only open with the button. It could not be thumb rolled or flicked open with the flipper hole. The detent was locked shut. It took 13 emails and 4 phone calls in 4 weeks to Artisan/CJRB just to get a response. I’m still waiting on the 3rd knife. I can promise you CJRB lost my business just with the poor customer service alone. I asked them for documentation from their Quality department on root cause and corrective action regarding how these 2 knives even left their plant! They still haven’t replied to my request.

I can name 20 other budget knives I own which I didn’t have to take apart to clean/oil to get it to open. But CJRB’s refusal to contact me back for over a month isn’t acceptable…whether it’s a $50 knife or $500 knife. And I’m still waiting on the 3rd knife as well as answers to my emails.

I just bought two Pyrite Wharncliffe knives. One in Black Stainless and on with green G10. They were $42 and $44. I would say they are the best for under $45. I like the Civivi Elementum 2 for under $60. I paid $57. I like the Civivi Conspirator for under $65. I paid $63. These are my three favorite budget knives. The Conspirator being my favorite. PS I don't have a rattle on my Pyrites. The only thing that could make me like it more would be a flipper.

I have a pyrite which gets decent pocket time, but I use it as my secondary knife, the one I'm not afraid to pry a paint can, cut a roofing tile, or lend to the guy asking to borrow my knife. It is a top naaach button lock, not because any channel told me so, but because I've used the knife. 🗡

I have the drop point and two wharny Pyrites and have no detent lash or slop on any of them. You might have gotten one that slipped through QC and shouldn’t have. I have a few Petrified Fish models and love them all as well. Saying something is the “best” is clearly subjective, and what ticks all the boxes for some people doesn’t for others. The Pyrite certainly ranks way up there for me… until the next “best” budget knife is released of course. Great video! I appreciate your perspective! 👊🏻

My pyrite large has no lash on the detent. Maybe they saw this video and made sure to fix their design before releasing the Large or maybe you had a dud. I HATE the finger choil on this knife with a passion as I hate all finger choils on medium to large folding knives, but otherwise it has been a very good EDC. It is light weight (I have the green micarta version), has decent blade steel that holds an edge for a little while and isn't a bear to sharpen, slicey blade geometry, and is large without being too thick and taking up too much pocket room. I did upgrade mine with Artisan's Ti clip, which I highly recommend everyone do to eliminate the pocket clip hotspot. It wasn't a perfect knife out of the box, but it is outstanding once you fix the pocket clip issue. I don't know if I could call it the best budget EDC, but it is a banger for certain. Everyone has their preferences (like me with choils) and I can't fault you for yours. I think most people who EDC won't really care about that lash at all and probably have never noticed it on their knife if it is there. That Ronin looks outstanding to me and I may have to check it out. Love 14C28N blade steel all day long. That could be the best budget EDC knife out there. You may be right.

No blade play on either of mine. My budget one had a little button stick, but taking it apart, doing knife stuff to it(cleaning components, little lube-age to the bearings...) and reassembling it got rid of it. The one from the kickstarter though? Phhhhhh. Crrrrrazy button stick. So much so that I've had to make sure I'm not pressing the pivot. Haven't taken it apart yet because I wanted to carry a while and I'm thinking about stone washing the blade(the finish is oddly irregular). I'm hopeful that we'll alleviate the button -freeze- stick, but we'll see. It won't get a whole lot of actual use either way as I got it for a gent carry. ✌🏽🤘🏼

My favorite knife, bar none, period...the CJRB Krag in the Damascus blade. Carbon fiber scales. For me, zero hot spots in my hand in any carry position, wicked sharp and stays that way with just a strop, looks great, cuts great, works great. Fit and finish is more consistent than the higher end blades I've owned (including Spyderco, Kershaw, Benchmade...too many to even list). The steel ain't perfect, but it's as close as any I've used, ESPECIALLY for the price. More expensive knives get dull, and when you're using them day in day out, a huge part of the day...I'll take a $50 - 100 blade that performs awesomely, versus a $300 - 500 blade that is kinda maybe sorta more awesomer... Just my 2 cents! Dig your channel bro!!

People don't care what type of steel the handle is because it's going to be a soft stainless steel because it doesn't need the hardness for edge retention. It's the same reason people don't typically care what kind of steel their forks or pots are.

I checked both of my pyrites. No detent lash at all. I did have clip screw loosen on me but that’s easy fix. Not a huge button lock fan but the Pyrite has action and detent as good if not better then a lot of my liner lock & framelock knives. Best button lock action I’ve felt on a knife less the $200. Is it the best budget knife? Idk but it’s up there. Definitely in the top tier imo. But Civivi, Vosteed, Kizer, PF, Bestech, & QSP all have great knives in that price range. Depends on your preference. I can say both my pyrites were overall better then my Civivi Qubit & Altus. (Much better then altus atleast when it comes to detent, action, & button stick) Overall similar quality. My Civivi Sentinel Strike is nicer overall but more expensive. Idk Its all this button lock craze! It’s ridiculous, but both pyrite designs are really really good looking to me. Top 3 favorite budget knife design of all time. (Bladeshape & Handle) I’m a basic guy who likes those kind of bugout/sebenza minimal straightforward looks to a knife! 🤣 All that being said I bet PF Beluga or Mini is just as good of a knife! Ultra stupid choice when you have a ambi lock like the crossbar style lock. That being said, I have a CJRB Pyrite with drop point blade and also a Wharncliffe like shown in your review on the way. My current Pyrite does not have the action problems yours exhibited so I'd say what you are experiencing is not normal (for sure a defect). It's probably where the blade was cut wrong or grinded too much on that engagement surface. Yes, the pocket clip is poop, and really the Bestech Ronan pocket clip style would look better on the Pyrite than what CJRB provides. I'm also curious what kind of steel the handles are made from. It can't be too expensive of a material as the handle is a decent amount of steel by itself. Who knows, maybe it's melted down cars.. LOL. I like my Pyrite so far, but will be like you and look with scrutiny at the new one on the way! Thanks Man!

No name “stainless steel” for handles is standard. See Kershaw, Spyderco, etc. it’s a budget material (heavy and magnetic unlike titanium), and no one cares about core characteristics like edge retention and toughness of the handle (just the blade). I’m sure if they listed 3cr13mov, many noobs like you would mistake it for the blade steel.

OK boys and girls here we go. First off button locks are not my first choice. Are they a deal breaker? No, but they might just my last choice for a knife I am actually going to use. I have a Pyrite, the KnifeCenter Exclusive in Titanium and black Micarta. No detent lash, I even spent a few minutes beating the knife with a rubber chicken to ensure if there was any play it would become evident. Still no play. Next I prefer the CJRB Ekko to the Pyrite. I also prefer the liner lock version. But whatever floats your boat. One last comment, in the closing minute of the video you added a Rollshambo Logo with a little something added, a hand. That hand has a finger extended. At first I thought it was flipping the bird. I was deeply offended, really I am one of America's finest sons, 🤣🤣, well maybe a good guy at any rate, Ok Ok truth be told I am just not the worst of the bunch, fine. Anyway after wiping the tears from my eyes I could see that is not the middle finger. Nicely Played Rolly, nicely played indeed.

Seems like you're hating on the thing. The button lock on this one, is unbeatable in convenience to open/close, it's super smooth and super easy, it's thin, which makes it a good cutter, and it's light, and there's plenty ways to carry it so that nothing will be banging on it due to lack of backspacer. I wouldn't get the "Victor" it's bulky, if you want bigger knife they're releasing bigger Pyrite, and I wouldn't get the "ronan" because axis lock is ew in comparison to button lock.

We don't worry about what steel the handle is made of because it's irrelevant. No company lists the name of their handle steel. How tough is it? It's tougher than g10 or aluminum or wood or micarta. It matters on the blade because the incredibly thin edge will be subjected to incredible amounts of force. This is not so with the handles. Even voicing that concern suggests that you either didn't think much about it or have only raised this question in an attempt to make a problem where one doesn't exist.

You're welcome to disagree with my opinion, but any time a tool is made of steel the stainless nature of that steel is important..unless of course it isn't a tool to you or you aren't planning on using it in a situation where rust is a concern...voicing your displeasure with my opinion that the stainless nature of steel is worth discussion suggests that either you don't understand this or are dissapointed I didn't fawn over everything about this particular model and validate your own opinion...that said I do like the knife but I'd prefer either the titanium version or aluminum for better weight reduction and natural rust resistance

I don't have pyrite (not a big fan on button locks), but had 2 knives from the brands that use cjrb manufacture and both of them had this issue with a bit of detent lash. One of the knives had it right from the box, the other one brought the same issue after couple of weeks. I can't say it bothers me tbh, I don't expect much from such a cheap price and both of the knives were bought just for fun, but the same time I have to say I had few budget knives that didn't have any issues at all. Actually right now one of my favorite knives to carry is Civivi Sokoke - somewhere around 60 bucks and it just an outstanding everyday helper.

Take this with a grain of salt because I am not a button lock fan. They are fidgety but is not a great lock. I have had two button lock elementums the first one was horrible and I sent it back to Amazon for a refund the second one I received in a giveaway from Luv Them Knives, I kept it because it functions. It is nowhere near as fidgety as the pyrite. Civivi has lots of problems with QC as do many manufacturers it's becoming very much more evident now that they are producing budget knives in larger numbers.

Appreciate you taking the time to watch even if we disagree on what's important I think handle scale material is very important but my main concern with not knowing the type of steel is the corrosion resistance and less so it's toughness, at this price range I prefer the ekko or the Riff, as for whether I want to criticize a knife for something I don't gain anything for bashing a knife(quite the opposite really) I just do my best to convey my opinion to those who care to listen and watch, thanks for dropping by🤙
