On the night of the 5/6th June 1944 the 101st Airborne Division parachuted into Normandy. Intense fighting took place around the small village of Angoville Au Plain. Two 101st Airborne Medics established an aid station inside the 11th century church. The medics were called Kenneth Moore and Robert Wright.
The battle for Angoville Au Plain lasted for serval days with possession switching between the Americans and Germans. The aid station was allowed to continue to function by the Germans after the saw that it was treating both German and American casualties.
Over the course of the next two days they treated both wounded Americans and Germans - caring for friend and foe.
Inside the church there are still pews stained with the blood of those soldiers who had been wounded on D Day and D Day +1.

I was blessed to have met Medics Ken Moore, Bob Wright, Joseph "Mother" Madigan, and David Tuel. You see, my father passed away in 83 and he was 101st and this was his war too. He was gravely injured on January 10th, by a tree burst during the Battle of the Bulge. The Nazis had captured the aid station. I won't get into the specs of his facial injuries as they were gnarly and these medics saved his life. I met these wonderful men in Atlanta Ga, at a 501/101st Airborne reunion. I had no clue but they were waiting for me on top of Stone Mtn. What a nice surprise. Medic Tuel gave me photos of my father and I was so very thankful to be able to tell them thank you for saving my fathers life and basically giving my siblings and I life. He wasn't expected to make it and he spent over a year in hospital. I met them two more times, at other reunions, and I communicated with Moore and Tuel through email. I think of them often and am saddened that they have all passed away. Blue skies gentlemen.

The informal ceasefire for the medics to carry a man to the church reminds me of another one. In the fierce fighting inside of Caen the Canadians and British were battling across one of the city's squares. Suddenly a small child ran out into the open square, followed shorty by his frantic mother to retrieve him. Both sides stopped firing when this happened, until the mother and child were safely back inside their building. As one of the Canadians present said, "World war two stopped for a moment, and then when they were out of the crossfire, the war started again." 🤔🤨🤷‍♂ I remember Paul covering this on his channel. 👌

@@thehistoryexplorer Now that I think about it, I believe I heard the story from an interview in "The Valour and the Horror" which is about the Canadians in Normandy and is available here on KZread. I'm pretty sure it was General Jacques Dextraze of the Royal 22 regiment from Quebec, the famous _Van Doos._ Those were some _really_ tough guys from Quebec! The Normans liked them a lot because they spoke French and their ancestors had often gone from Normandy to North America hundreds of years earlier. Now they had come back to liberate them from the Nazis. However, Quebecois and Parisian French are a little bit different. Anyway, Jacques rose from private in 1940 to general during his career, and became the colonel commanding his regiment during WW2. Quite the intelligent guy and a courageous soldier. He died back in 1993 but the documentary has him talking a lot and you will be in awe of the stories these front line soldiers had to tell! General Sidney Radley-Walters, the top scoring tank ace among the western Allies with 18 or 19 kills, also tells some of his stories. It was his regiment, the Sherbrooke Fusiliers, who dispatched Michael Wittmann on August 8, 1944, and Radley-Walters witnessed the action from very close range in his Sherman! kzread.info/dash/bejne/aX2pw7iHl7fRnLA.html& I must add that "The Valour and the Horror" was fiercely criticized by Canadian veterans who fought the Nazis. They were particularly upset that the Canadian national broadcaster, the CBC, had used many taxpayer dollars producing a documentary that they considered grossly inaccurate. They felt far too much time was spent criticizing the army and very little actually documenting their great victories. This has always been the bane of Canadian film makers. If they tell the stories of terrible mistakes they are soundly thrashed by the men who were there. Who to believe? Personally, I say the vets who were there and did the fighting and bleeding.

I have such respect for the French. They remember. They don't forget. Places like this, with the origonal blood stains, as well as gravesights, are tended by families who were liberated on DDay, with children, then grandchildren, inheriting the responsibility. My Uncle was with Patton. And my Dad was a bomber pilot with the Army Air Corp.

That German Army Machine Gunner was kept from firing and the Catholic cross on his chest was to show you that he couldn't and wouldn't fire on anyone in the Church. It has been seen and will be seen again in the annels of history. Had nothing to do with the Geneva Convention. Me and my 85 year old father are going to Church now and as Veterans of Foreign Wars we hold our heads up and high this morning after sharing this at our breakfast this morning! I visited that church on a D Day Battlefield tour back some years ago. The story of a young villager holding his father's hand and watching his father killed is bad enough, but we were told the story by the man that once was that little boy. That image still haunts me to this day.

@@thehistoryexplorer I enjoyed it very much. It brought back many memories. You should check out the memorial to the American Airborne on the grounds of the church. In France, the Government will not give land to erect memorials. The locals of that village where the church is, raised their own funds to buy the land, erect the memorial and maintain it as a tribute to the Airborne troops that fought to free them from the Germans. As thanks for the work of the paratroopers on that night, the church installed commemorative stained glass windows: one dedicated to the pair of medics, and one to the 101st Airborne Division parachutists. Robert Wright expressed his wish to be buried at the church, but bureaucratic red tape made this almost impossible. In the end, some of his ashes were smuggled into France to be buried in the churchyard. The unofficial headstone simply reads “R.E.W.”, Wright’s initials. Thank you for rekindling a memory of a wonderful trip I took to France many years ago.

What luck? Luck had nothing to do with it. That was God’s mercy stopping the detonation of that mortar. This was after all Gods House and He took care of these men!

The only problem I have with this short documentary, is the segment where the mortar comes through the roof of the church. The gentleman narrating the video refers to the mortar, not detonating as luck. Twice he refers to it as luck. If you cannot acknowledge the blessing of God, you should be scared that you do not recognize the presence of God. Even the German soldier showed more respect than you. Good luck to you friend. 🙏✝️

Again incredible work researching and making this, I've often wondered who the frenchman was who threw the petrol bomb into the open back truck full of germans from a window in Paris, its an iconic film reel ,

You’ll find very similar churches in Gaza that are freshly stained by the Israeli genocide. Our ancestors fought so hard in that war and we now put up with a government that allows this to happen again, as if we learnt and fought for nothing.

It's awful that Hamas uses civilian buildings, and Palestinians, as bases and human shields 😢 If they didn't set up in churches, hospitals & schools, those sites would be standing today. It's too bad they have no care for the Geneva convention, let alone their own people.
