As someone who’s just seen him today I assumed he was highlighting how accuracy doesn’t matter because DK is known for bad accuracy.

One of the hole animations per character is actually recycled from the character select screen.

They really dropped the golf ball on this one. Even Tennis Aces had decent mechanics and had a bit more content in it.

At least the developers were honest and named the game after the amount of time they spent developing it. You've gotta give it to 'em.

I really wish they would just quit with the "finish it later" approach to games like these. Just because it worked with Splatoon doesn't mean it'll work with everything else.

The only reason it works with Splatoon anyway, is because it’s competitive and you unlock new weapons, equipment, modes, and so on. It’s not just a leaderboard. I don’t think a game should launch unfinished/lacking content, but at least with Splatoon by the time you get far enough unlocking stuff they’ve added new content. They won’t wait months to add things (although some of that was just locked away from the get go).

The thing is Splatoon didn't even have the "Finish it later" mentality, It was a complete game from the start. They just added constant updates to the game to keep the community active, same also applies to Smash.

I'm glad you pointed out the lackluster hole animations. The previous ones from Toadstool Tour were just brimming with personality. Heck, in that game Wario throws a freaking boulder on his head when he gets a double bogey! Also, I almost couldn't believe it when I heard they removed the accuracy mechanic entirely, truly a bizarre decision. Very sad to see the direction this series took.

bro toadstool tour had a 3 minute animation, and power tennis had a 5 minute long animation, that may not have the same quality but probably took a lot of work as well to make, and the games still turned out amazing with a greater amout of content, nintendo just really doing the bare minimum.

No. Nintendo has all the money in the world (They're the richest company in Japan), to give Camelot more than enough money to make a really good Mario Golf and Tennis game. Read it all first! :)

Year late response, but it still stands that apparently Nintendo really doesn't want to make any new voice lines for the characters if they already have a voice already. Just keep recycling the same ones!

I can't be the only one whose getting tired of this "less is more" mentality Nintendo devs have developed lately. It's a *Mario game!* Less is more doesn't always work with Mario! This is just another pretty looking game covering what's souless. What happened to the expressions in the animations from World Tour? There's just no excuse.

Honestly right now I'm not even paying attention to them anymore, I've been paying attention to Sega instead, because Nintendo has been screwing up left and right. Their output as of recently has been definitely below average, sure they've had their one off solid titles recently like Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, last year Paper Mario: The Origami King was pretty okay, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons was fun for a good month until I got bored, but the trash we've been given definitely ways those three out, Super Mario 3D All Stars, The Legend of Zelda: SkyWard Sword HD, Mario Golf: Super Rush, and all of the stupid decisions like cancelling Mario's Anniversary on March 31st and taking away the only official Battle Royale for Mario we have, the way they've been treating the Super Smash Bros. Melee community, the way they've been treating the Splatoon community, they no longer have respect for the fans, they've become just another money hungry, greedy company.

@@koolaid33 It also bothers me how too many people can easily forgive Nintendo and seemingly forget the negative impact they created on most fan communities. Paper Mario: No longer allowed to have creative freedom with existing characters and can't be a proper RPG for literally no reason. It's a mix bag of different concepts by the developers the series doesn't even know what it wants to be. It has an identity crisis. Also, how they intentionally igroned the fans of their outcry of what they wanted for over a decade. SSB Melee and Splatoon: the negative impact they created with the communities for shutting them down. Let's also add how they outright dismissed the problems with Joycon drifting despite evidences showing otherwise and how overly protective they are of their IPs; they will shutdown fan creations and even targeted ROMs despite how legal they are for usage.

this game is just the prime example of Nintendo saying "We needed a Mario game this year who cares if it turns out shit" the same thing happened with ultra smash and you can tell they didn't want to put too much effort into making extra content.

Looks like the wait and see approach has served me well again. What happened to the effort that Nintendo used to put into their games? This is just sad.

Tbf, Camelot (the developers of the game) are not even a subsidiary of Nintendo (they're an exclusive partner however). They used to be incredible back in the GBA/Gamecube days with Toadstool Tour, Mario Power Tennis and Golden Sun, but something definitely hit the bricks around the WiiDS era with them...

This is standard Nintendo/Consumer relationship stuff. Nintendo releases some good games, people love them. But then Nintendo drops the ball a bit, the fans call them out and accuse them of putting no effort into their games, asking what happened. Then a bit of time passes, and Nintendo "redeems" themselves and they're now loved by all once again. It's a vicious cycle.

@@donodj613 tbh I kind of like the trend of Nintendo going for a more clean and "modern" look in their game UIs, but when it comes to Mario games they should at least find a good balance between simplicity and goofy, stylistic, cartoonish asthetics. Odyssey's menus looked like an iPhone home screen more than a game UI. It looked clean and pleasing to the eye but lacked Super Mario's signature character and charm.

Camalot has been holding back a lot in the switch era. Don’t know why.

Speaking of this, I couldn't believe Camelot created an original final boss more shallow than Intelligent System's King Olly, but they actually did it. The existence of the final boss in MGSR is only revealed in the penultimate area of the game, why?

For 80% of the game, you are just working your way up the ranks of the golf league, then all of a sudden you get a legendary sword and go on a quest to save Bowser. I'll admit the absurdity of it was entertaining though. Advance Tour was better though. You become a golf Master, then you are invited by Mario to join his Master Tourtament. It's a simple but effect plot for a sports game and didn't try to be anything it wasn't.

Something else that's an immediate red flag for me is the UI in these recent side games. I'm not sure exactly when or why this happened, but someone seems to have decided that these games looked too energetic and really needed to better resemble a corporate Powerpoint presentation. From the menus to the HUD, to the dialogue boxes, nearly every UI element in this game is a sleek rectangle or circle featuring a thin, straight-laced font. This goes for Super Rush, 3D All Stars, and the two Switch Mario Party Games (which look completely identical in engine and presentation to boot.) It used to be that collecting a star in Mario Party was like slamming a treasure chest down in front of you and cracking it open. There were dedicated camera swoops, animations, and ecstatic fanfare with lively text proclaiming your achievement. Yet the same action in the Switch titles is cold and clinical. It's about on-par with a starbit withdrawal from the forgettable Bank Toad in Mario Galaxy 2. This all feels somewhat similar to the watered-down, toad-infested Paper Mario games where every enemy was the game character equivalent of a stock photo. Despite those games retaining a great sense of visual stylisation, the minimalisation of any unique qualities in the characters gave me the same bleak feeling as this new set of Switch games. It saddens me to say I'm not likely to buy the new Mario Party, and I doubt I'll care much for any more of these cold, lifeless imitations.

You can see that this became the official Nintendo guideline for graphic design when the Switch generation started. It's like they decided that from that moment on the entire Nintendo "ecosystem" should have a uniform look, resembling the flat, clinical design of the Switch's UI (on the WiiU, they were quite fond of transparency and rounded edges, for example. At least they still didn't force it for every game). Kinda sad, really. Can you imagine a new Pikmin game nowadays without its fun, "bubbly" font?

Odyssey, BOTW, and New Horizons are a part of this weird minimalism trend too. The only big Switch game I think think of off the top of my head saved from this curse is Luigi's Mansion 3 with it's Virtual Boy menu theming, but I think even other parts of the UI might still have minimalism. It's incredibly boring. All of this plain HD lightning with semi-realistic or plastic textures is starting to look really samey too.

The one developer of Mario Strikers is Next Level Games, not Camelot.

The post hole animations from Toadstool Tour and World Tour were honestly some of my favorite things in the whole Mario sports series and we're actually what I was most excited about. Knowing they were removed honestly ruined this game quite a lot for me.

When the 3DS ended support, that's when Nintendo just threw their hands up and said "Fuck it". That's the impression I'm getting.

It did honestly give me the same feeling as Ultra Smash once I finished the story mode and was like..."now what?". It's not AS bad but, it has that feeling. Aces wasn't brimming with content either but at least the online was solid and had tournaments to work towards.

Super rush is way better than ultra smash. Ultra smash offers like 5 courses that are all identical, just palette swapped, and literally nothing else. At least super rush has an 8-10 hour long story mode and 4 other free play modes with 6 courses with 18 holes each, all unique from one another

I really liked N64 Mario Golf's music. I mean really, the course music was relaxing and fun to listen to while playing and was unique to each course, and the game's putting music was a nice choice of tune remixed from prior Mario games... Even though the howler monkeys and ape noises on the 4th course was sometimes slightly distracting and/or annoying, but not too much of a complaint there because it does create a bit of environmental immersion, and at least nothing like that happens with the other 5 course soundtracks. N64 Mario Golf is my favorite of the series. Some good memories .

These kinds of games used to be automatic purchases, but after Mario Tennis Ultra Smash, I wait and let the community tell me if Nintendo decided to give a rat's ass

@@kha0ticdud3 Aces started out lackluster too until all the updates came in. Drip Feeding content into games... While it works some people are tired of that practice for those who notice.

I recommend trying to play Toadstool Tour and Advance Tour together, by transferring Neil and Ella between games. The GBA characters will actually still get experience points if you play as them in the Gamecube game. Having trouble with the mushroom tournament on GBA? Just move your characters to the Gamecube and make some progress there. You'll also continue to get them stronger by doing that! The bloody custom clubs transfer over, too. And every character can use them, not just Neil and Ella. You can snap the Gamecube game in half by using super POW clubs. It's a pretty fun thing to do... given that you're able to set it up.

This is why I think Toadstool Tour is the peak of the series. The game alone already has so much content for those who do not have a GBA, but if you had a GBA obtained Advance Tour, there is even more to do.

The saddest part is that there is literally nothing we can do about this. The games will still sell millions, they'll still be a commercial success, and Nintendo will not learn anything.

I stopped playing after I realized accuracy was random. I finally realized why I was hitting shots perfectly and they were still curving off in the other direction and it was a very frustrating realization for me.

Oh brother, never felt so happy to avoid buying a game that looked enticing at first. I really hope they’d avoid this in the future but they’d totally go for it again because hardly anything is stopping them. Come on, they could push this into Mario Kart and that would really be a massacre of content just like this.

Camelot should probably abandon "Story Mode" for their future sports games. Aces and Super Rush have sadly failed with this idea and I doubt future games will succeed with it. The development time and resources from Story Mode should be put into fleshed out modes and courses.

The worst thing is that story modes don't have much replayability value except for speedrunners or other people who make unconventional use of the game. So they spend a lot of their development time in a game mode that once you finisht it after 5 or 6 hours, it's like it doesn't exist anymore. In the case of Mario Golf this is particularly bad because after you finish Story Mode you are left with a kind of demo with no content at all.

I disagree as I feel the story mode is what I look forward to in these games the most. Tho I dont think the story mode should replace the main modes we got just add to them.

I hate that every unlockable is behind the story mode almost like they dont want you to play as mario and the others cause once you beat it your mii will be better then most the characters its nuts

Kinda sad that Camelot wasn't able get this one right. Dunno were there holding back from Nintendo's side. I personly is not fan of Mario Golf or Tennis since those are not my personal favorites, but I don't hate those either. That is kinda problem with this "release base game and beef it up later with updates" -titles. You should have semi beefy title to begin with so people won't get bored in first month and sell it away before updates even arrive.

Ezactly. Dont get why people think splatoon as an example of release unfinished game and finish it later. Splatoon, in my opinion, was already beefy at the start. And they just kept adding more and more content, and even in splatoon 2 a seperate dlc story.

@@kha0ticdud3 Yeah both 1 and 2 Splatoons did this very well. I only wish they would have keep Splatfests on longer since those were most fun events. Monster Hunter Rise also does this right. But yeah I hope not all future games become like this that are supported by multiplayer like these examples.

It seems that the development mentality of this game was "accessibility". In order to appeal to a more broad scope of people, they had to take away most of what made the older Mario Golf games special. Too many modes would be overbearing, learning the old swing method would be too frustrating, and having so many gear options to choose from would be to confusing; so of course the best possible solution is to just strip that all away, right? Wrong. The best part about all the older games was figuring all of that stuff out, and World Tour did the best part by covering what each mechanic or mode was in the story mode. First console Mario Golf in years and it doesn't even have a best shots record? That's just sad.

Yeah it is sad... To be honest? Back then when i buyed Toadstool tour i had absolutly no clue about golf in the slightest so i got my butt kicked many times... but slowly i worked myself in and to this day i still love this game

You're right on some things but off on others. Like I don't doubt that the new accuracy system was to make it more accessible, but it's also pretty incorrect to say that the old shot system was what made Mario Golf special, (as it was literally just a bog standard shot system you'd see in almost any Golf Game.) It's also worth noting that despite the accuracy changes making the skill floor lower the changes to how shots are curved gives this a much higher skill ceiling than past games as well, (it helps that because the holes are all on one big map, there's a number of holes where you can think outside of the box and fire to another part of the course for a setup shot.) The modes being removed likely had nothing to do with making it more accessible and moreso because they put their focus elsewhere. While I don't disagree that certain modes had no business being gone (Ring Shot, Club Slots, Doubles and so forth would all have fit in very well and even could have synergized well with Speed Golf, hell there's modes like XC Golf you can onlyplay in the story mode,) they evidently rushed it for release and put all their effort into Speed Golf as the secondary mode, (though credit where it's due, Speed Golf is much more fleshed out than any of the past side modes at the very least,) we also can't pretend all the past side modes were winners either, a good chunk of them would be missed out of principle as opposed to because they were a good mode. In that same vein; the Equipment System from World Tour was very likely not toned down for accessibility, but rather; toned down because everyone hated how it meant so much that you were railroaded into one set, they tied most of the major stuff to leveling and the clubs/clothes are mostly a bonus. It's also worth noting that a best shots thing being missing doesn't matter much these days since the Switch has a built in recording feature, of all the features it's easily the most reasonable one to be missing.

They really need to stop looking at "accessibility." Their attempts to making games more accessible have only made them be more restrictive. Plenty of their Wii-U games feel more accessible than this because they didn't try.

A lot of modern games are doing this. Look at smash ultimate compared to previous entries. Any modern FG compared to old ones. Heck even DMC5 while a step up in some categories is a massive step down in the deph and player expression older titles gave. So many games of different genre's are doing this nowadays and many people are loving the new titles more as shown by sales and such. I hope platformers never take this path.

@@dave9515 Smash Ultimate isn't even a remotely accurate comparison lol. No it's not as in depth as something like Melee (pretty much no game really is,) but it hasn't bogged down the mechanics in any remotely major degree and has undeniably given the competitive scene the most love it's ever gotten by the development team and at the very least it has much more going for it mechanically than every other game aside from arguably Melee (and even then the two coexist with strong competitive scenes because they succeed at different things.) Plus, contrary to something like Mario Golf suffering in terms of content to (presumably,) not overwhelm players Smash Ultimate is not remotely short on content either. Hell you could apply the same mechanical claims about most modern fighting games, a game being made to not completely alienate any newcomers doesn't automatically equate to being dumbed down and it's incredibly ignorant to make such a claim. Hell the only reason you could even spin a valid Mario Golf comparison with most modern fighters is because they follow the "add most of the characters and stages later," approach (except as paid DLC through various season passes.)

I really like this format of video. Less heavy editing, but a more topical subject and something you clearly have a passion for. Love it! Wouldn’t mind seeing more like this :-D

I didn't know the 3DS Mario Golf animations were so good, I need to look into those at some point.

cant wait for the modern nintendo update plan: release a game half finished, promise a few updates, see if people keep buying it, and then cancel all the updates you had planned when it stops making money. people find out that new horizons doesn't have the much content? just finish up the holiday stuff and drop it. super mario maker 2 doesn't meet sales expectations? scrap all the new modes and just give them one last bundle of powerups. i can only imagine we see two new maps and maybe a new mode before nintendo drops this game like a hot potato too. i worry that this might only get worse as nintendo catches up to other AAA trends...

well, finished is a matter of opinion as far as creative works are concerned. but the point is; there is tons and tons of content that was planned after release that was clearly abandoned a few months after it had poor sales. the SMB2 mushroom hardly even made the cut after being reduced from a downloadable additional mode to a single powerup; and that's about all there is to say about things that even made it in at all.

I swear, Mario Golf World Tour was one of my most favored games for the 3DS. I just loved how it played, with single player actually being entertaining (some parts challenging too), and the online mode being great fun playing with random people and power ups. I remember meeting this one guy named "Uncle AL" or something like that and playing with him every night for a while since nobody else played haha. Miss those days!

This only happens in Stroke Play (maybe Speed Golf too?). If you switch to Points Play, they aren't as bad.

To be honest, this is just nintendo now. They had the same issue with tennis and super mario party and quite a few other games. They put in almost no content, decide to flesh none of it out and then they release it as a $60 game despite it being more of a $20 game for any other system.

This is kind of pathetic to say, but even season passes are more honest. You get an idea of how much content you’re getting, even if you don’t know the specifics (like it says characters/stages just not which ones). With “free updates” that really just means they can choose how much of the unfinished game they feel like finishing, and can’t be held accountable because they never listed anything specific. “Don’t worry, they’re going to add new content.” “How much?” “I don’t know.” “Exactly.” With Super Mario Party people kept saying they might add more content. Well they didn’t, so now where are you? Oh, you moved on because you stopped caring so they got away with it and you’ll fall for it again. Not to mention it wouldn’t matter if they added new content anyway, because they make the mechanics/stages in these games so basic now. They’re not going to increase the quality for free content, so it’s just more content that’s as bland as the base game.

Exactly what I've been thinking since the release of the Switch, most games on it are shitty third party indie games or games that were already released on previous consoles, but resold at full price. The only "Original" games on the Switch I can think of on the top of my head are Odyssey, Splatoon 2, the Tennis game, and this. And let's not kid ourselves, Splatoon 2 is basically Splatoon 1 Deluxe.

Super Mario Party was a snoozefest. Almost everything had an animation that took a minute or longer, there was almost no risk to anything, the items were downright useless (excluding a select few) and they had their own use animation that also took a minute, the walking speed was slow (and there was no fast mode), the minigames were slow and tedious, and above all the boards were far too basic.

GBA. GameCube. Wii. 3DS. These were Nintendo’s strongest eras in my opinion. The Switch era feels like Nintendo’s laziest, with only few standalone games being considered the best in the series. The rest are ports of old games that aren’t even remastered as good as Spyro or Crash. And now Mario 3D Allstars and Skyward Sword HD exists (at least newer players will get to experience Nintendo’s best games for the first time). I love you Nintendo, but I gotta be real with you. :|

I think the worst thing is that a majority of nintendo fans will defend this game (You can like the game, but you need to point out the flaws like any other game) and then it'll just say to Nintendo that they can repeat another 60 dollar game with barely any content. Between 60 dollar ports, paywalled amiibo, Mario All Stars, it feels like Nintendo is pushing the boundary of "just good enough" and see how far that blind praise of anything they do will go

All of the character is just gone. Its so sad looking at toadstool tour and seeing so much.. mario, and then this game is just real life.

Seems like the Mario series for quite a decade (with the exception of a few fever dreams like Super Mario Maker Duology and Super Mario Odyssey) have really lost the kind of magic the series had in the past. Hope the series can get back up from this since it's just disappointing to me. as someone who's grown up with this series his entire life, see a hollow version of itself. Perhaps it's just me, but that's how I feel about Mario currently.

At least we got Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and sooner; Sparks of Hope. But those were made by Ubisoft & Nintendo kinda agreed to it. Um. At least we got Mario 3D World port as well.

I feel like this game is meant to be baby’s first Mario Golf instead of something for longtime fans of it.

well, you’re not wrong. and even they demoed that with the Wii controls in the ads featuring this game.

One thing to keep in mind is that Nintendo advertised "FREE" DLC-- which means they know the content was "lite." I suspect at least 10 full courses, a tourney mode, ring mode, skip-able animations and cpu turns, and being able to "retire" from an online match officially without penalty. I would hope for better animations-- but i don't think free dlc would fix those...

I think the reason that the animations for the victories/defeats are so short and bland is because of speed golf. It would take up more time with how long they would be. but still, they need more animations for each victory. like have some animations have more character than Mario tilting his cap.

Those animations only happen when you get the ball in the hole though. And if you’re playing locally/online you could have it play on that person’s screen but not on the others.

Maybe that could be a valid excuse for an indie dev, but this is a Mario game. No reason the two mode types can't have sperate animations. Not to imply crunch, I happily could have waited until the end of the year for this game if it meant polish like that. But I don't even think a few cool animations would even warrant taking until the end of a year..?? Nintendo used to be really good at animations and still are if Smash trailers are anything to go by. They just.. don't. They don't do the thing.

I still say New Horizons and Super Mario Maker 2 are the worst of it so far because they left the games unfinished and simply fucked off with the money (before anyone comes at me about SMM2, I just have three words: "Extra Game StyleS"). Not to defend Nintendo at all, of course. Just saying that they can and have done worse so far and it's not clear yet whether they'll stoop that low again here.

Play Mario Golf on the N64 or the Gamecube. I'm sure you won't regret it.

I guess I can say I'm glad I was really skeptical of this one. Mario Tennis Aces seemed like a really bad omen that they would half-ass Mario Golf: Super Rush as well. Also, can I just say that I think the course variety in World Tour is so much better than Super Rush? I mean, for crying out loud, you golf UNDERWATER and IN SPACE in that game!

Oh god I forgot about this channel for 5 or 6 years, yet I remembered it one night and I did not expect the series to last this long. Thank you for the memories.

It’s depressing to see how bare bones Mario sports games are becoming. They’re playing it so safe that there isn’t as much to do.

Its more so the company pulling the strings on certain decisions than the devs. Companies nowadays play it more safe rather than taking the risk for something interesting and unique even if it doesn't become a hit. Nintendo was one of those companies back then. Nowadays....not so much.

I think if it comes to Switch, Games sells, no matter the Quality. On there own they are not really bad Games, but in compare with Games in the Past, they get reduced in Content. Not just Mario Golf, but also Tennis, Animal Crossing, Mario Party ect. I love the Switch and most of the Games have a reason to be on Switch (Luigi's Mansion 3. Mario Odyssey, Zelda BotW, Yoshi's Crafted World, later Metroid Dread ect.) but even as a Nintendo Fan, i do not like to get "milked" because it's a specific Character on the Cover. But on the other side: Releases like this Game, always reminds me, to play the GBA/3DS Games again.

I feel like the second dark age is coming for Nintendo.

I'm so glad you talked about this because I was actually considering getting this game, and I've never played a Mario Golf game before. I've never heard of World Tour on the 3DS but it sounds so much better and is probably cheaper too, so I'll keep an eye out for that instead. Thanks!

They think the game does ship complete. And the updates are just bonus content on top of a already completed game. In which case, the completed game sucks and is still just as bad as releasing an unfinished game.

I would honestly enjoy the mii voices from nsmbu than hearing go go go go constantly

One thing pointing out is that these new sports games are centered and about online multiplayer, but once the switch dies and the so does it's online then these games will just be an empty space on the shelf since they don't have much going on for the single player experience. The gamecube ones have much replayability since online wasn't a main focus function in that time and are solely focused on the gameplay experince both multiplayer and single player. World Tour had the best of both worlds but now we will just get bland sports games that are not even worth going back to in the future.

YEEEEEEP... there's a reason why SO MANY YEARS laters, people will still talk about the older titles and World Tour in the case of the 3Ds. They had enough content and the gameplay was fairly consistent. And even with no online, you could still enjoy everything they had to offer. And the replayability was pretty high! You had character taunts and cheers, Mini Golf, Ring Mode, Club Slots, etc. Like I won't care about Mario Tennis Aces outside of the new character additions because the offline side has very little content compared to the GameCube game and as gimmicky as the... _Gimmick Courts_ were, those courts had such great charm and fanservice to the Mario franchise AND you can play on them without any hazards! Camelot was firing on ALL cylinders back then. Nowadays, it's just flash and style over substance with online being the main focus with little else to show for it. Although the opening movie in Mario Golf Super Rush is a 10/10 like the GameCube opening movies.

Goomba Gripes is one of my favorite series in this channel

Regarding the animations being lame, I can't help but feel like that has been kinda standard for Nintendo in recent years, especially in their lower budget games. Just being lazy and cutting down on content in general

@@LoreGamerTV youd figure it be higher budget cause they got another animated intro like the gamecube era games, but i guess that was the most they could do similarly to the older games

@@bandannadoo yeah but remember that this time around the whole course is like a massive map so they had to increase the work on that and including the hub worlds for the rpg. They probably spent most of them time in working on those sadly

Nintendos Golden Age was clearly the Gamecube that theyre trying to mimic games from that era. Smash,Sunshine,Golf,Mario Party. I dont know what happened. It looks the same but lacks the depth and content

Idk about smash there, it seems pretty good to me (online is shit tho)

This was my first game in the series and ngl I had no problem playing XC Golf. It was challenging but fun. I did play about 20 minutes of MGTT, and I could see it was a bit more expansive. Oh and those updates are done to KEEP people playing, so you keep hopping on and playing periodically. I can understand why some people don't like it, but I've always appreciated it on Mario Tennis Aces. Something I am a little disappointed about is that EVERY character was already seen if you check the rankings in one of the story mode missions. They show Wiggler, Rocky Wrench, Koopa, Paratroopa, Dry Bones, and more.

At least it’s not another WiiU port, like what we used to get every five minutes!

Unpopular opinion: wii u ports werent that bad. Most ppl didnt even have a wii u so its honestly great for them and smart for nintendo. And plus, they havent really been doing that lately, instead making sequels

@@kha0ticdud3 (EDIT BECAUSE IT'S 1 AM AND I CAN'T TYPE) Fair opinion, since the Wii U didn't even meet THEIR OWN EXPECTATIONS at sales - a lot of people likely never played those Wii U exclusives until the super successful Wii U->Switch ports

So happy someone else is calling this game out on its flaws, it’s such a disappointment, and it’s honestly equivalent to mario tennis ultra smash in terms of how bare and soulless it is

DKs Eagle World Tour animation is so good! The silhouette style and his tie being visible is probably inspired from DKC Returns

Yeah there's an entire course based on the Returns game. Tis good.

I think I see a pattern of over ambition, horribly easy mechanics, and levels with massive difficulty spikes in games as of late. This is a very informative review, Goomba!

What I really hate: Why does the "story" mode (if we can even call it that) haave a level system? Back when this was leaked I was reminded of "Mario Golf: Advance Tour", which has a RPG-style story mode (that can actually be called a story mode!). You have world to explore, challenges, special events in the game world that require your golfing skill and reward you with better clubs or boosts to you stats (but those events are not mandatory and you only find them when explorin g the world or getting hints by talking with the NPCs (and there are a shit-ton of individual NPCs). The only thing I hate about the game are the forced doubles you have to play with an NPC (but if you are halway decent at the game and only level up your own character you shouldnt have a problem). And than I played Mario Golf: Super Rush and thought: Why a level-up system? Why do you get punished by the system for only leveling up a special skill? Why have a explorable world when there is nothing really to explore? The "story" mode of Super Rush doesnt need any of this! Would have been better to have it the "story" be more of a tournament-style experience like Slam Basketball, Strikers or Tennis, where the enemys get harder and harder and the only thing that counts is your skill. This game really dissapointed me, really hoped it would be more like Advance Tour...

I feel like this game is so half hearted because they felt nobody cared about Mario Golf. Personally I'm awful at Mario Golf but it's a fun time with other people.

This isn't anything new, sadly. Look at the state of Super Mario Party or Tennis Ace. Those games hold every similar issues (actually, I feel Nintendo's been like this a lot, mid Switch era).

This reminds me of my thoughts on modern Smash. Technically, if there's one thing modern Smash does right, it's the gameplay engine. It's the only thing they ever actually improve over time. It's like Melee fans really were the only people to ever have the guts to criticize the series when it slacked in areas, considering how much Melee fans care about their competitive play, which requires a good tight engine. Everything else here is spot on to Smash though. Lack of modes, lack of variety, 90% of the games' content boils down to just doing what you do in the main mode (in Smash's case, it's just fight fight fight). Especially when you brought up that N64 Mario Golf at least had a Ring Challenge. N64 Smash had Targets and Platforms. Variety modes that kept the experience from getting boring after a while.

The thing is, Smash has an insane amount of content regardless, in the case of Ultimate it makes sense to focus on a certain aspect. But yeah it is usually lacking some of the side modes but at least they nail the stuff that matters most.

Smash has alot of content, it just wasnt done right which is why over half of it is trash. They should of scrapped world of light and focus on creating multiple smaller modes that have much better replay value. In terms of the engine, it had some good ideas but those ideas have big flaws which are the main problems with it. Its overall decent which is fine since i think the game has bigger problems.

@@runterranger7398 Ultimate as it is now does have many modes, though it is not varied in the slightest and wasn't done right at all, so I agree with this here. I do feel that due to the timing in which I replied this, part of this here was in regards to it's launch release, since I've been bringing it up lately that many features and several modes were missing at launch that should've been there. Like Home Run Contest and Stage Builder. It's clearly an example of the "finish it later" approach that everyone talks about these days. Most Nintendo critics who are adamant about bringing up the "finish it later" approach 24/7 refuse to even toy with the idea of this, because it would mean criticizing Smash, and criticizing Smash is a huge NO to Nintendo fans, even the critics. I should've clarified that a lack of modes was mostly referring to the base Ultimate in the initial comment, though the rest is referring to modern Smash as a whole. In a sense, even when they fill in the gaps left by better modes, they still make some garbage that's barely varied from just fighting CPUs in VS. Mode. World of Light was a mistake. They should've made something similar to Melee's Adventure Mode if they really can't do Brawl's anymore with how big the current roster is. At least it would be better than World of Light or Smash 4's lack of an Adventure Mode altogether. I awaited the return of Targets since the Smash 4 pre-release days and it just hadn't happened. I was surprised when it didn't show up in Smash 4 and annoyed when it didn't show up in Ultimate. Even something as simple as the "Destroy Car" bonus stage from Street Fighter would be good to have. It would certainly be variety, and wouldn't even require much assets to create. The gameplay engine does have it's flaws, but the fact it improved this much since 2008 does show how criticism effected it, as it was in 2008 that Brawl would try it's hardest to stray away from Melee's engine by making everything floaty and adding tripping, and Melee fans rightfully criticized that, as it was a huge middle finger to them as fans of the game.

@@coreymurray432 I'd say it's probably the fact they aren't yet going the full step in Melee's direction. Like, I understand why it is, as Sakurai wants it to be a casual game and is probably trying to strike a balance, but I also feel like, as someone who plays Smash casually and has never played competitively in my life, I never really felt alienated by Melee's engine in the first place, so really, it's just trying to fix perceived problems that probably weren't there to begin with. It's mostly just a minor flaw. Nothing major. It has some of the best physics in the series to date by far. Since I don't really play competitively, I don't think I can really pinpoint the exacts.
