They're Destroying the Stairway to Heaven in Hawaii

If you live in Hawaii or you're planning on visiting, they're destroying the stairway to heaven. But there is still a way to get up to the top.

I did that hike back in 2006. The view was super amazing. And yeah it was almost a full day to hike. Awesome man

Other than trespassing, alot of tourists litter the living crap out of it and the locals have to pick up the trash

Did that in 1999 when stationed at K-bay. It was super sketchy back then. Another couple decades of Hawaiian rust and corrosion probably didn’t do it any favors.

Glad to have experienced that with my wife back in 2012. The rails and stairs were starting to rust and corrode. Don't think it would be wise to go now I'm sure its in a lot worse condition since Last time I went. But man that was the most epic and beautiful hike I've ever done. One for the bucket list,.

When your in the MC it’s not a stairway, it’s a runway. A hardcore runway. Don’t remember my time, but it was faster than the hanging lake run I did a few weeks later. Probably because hanging lake is at 12000 feet or so, and further. Still, a great run.

part of me is sad that they're tearing it down, as it's a cultural icon. I totally understand the incentive though and am glad there are more ways to get up there, even if they're potentially less exciting.

unique perspective here... i lived at one of the closest homes to one of two "easy" access points to the bottom of the trail. it was a nightmare and one of the many reasons we moved. groups of people would start their hike before sunrise and mass along the street making too much noise for any of the residents to sleep. the constant smell from the suntan and mosquito spray was awful. then, when and if they got back down, we'd find them in our yards using our hoses to wash off and get water... got to the point where we had to remove not only the hose but the handles to keep people from leaving them on. we would tow their illegaly parked cars with great delight! we grew up in the area and even remember the brave men stringing the cables. back then, people were respectful and we didnt mind that they were quiet and good -albeit temporary - neighbors. but then we roll forward 40 years.... as is usual, not everyone is responsible.... but the few are so awful that they ruin it for the rest. we were among many that pushed for the closure to end the trouble. the trail you used is the backside trail and of course we've been up and down that thing more times than i can remember, its fun! if you're stationed here do these hikes: kaena point (easy you can drive it in a camry. dont go when its raining or its the worst mud on earth) diamond head aiea loop trail with all the side trails. that takes a year or two to do them all.
