Stairway To Heaven Hike in 4K (Legally Hiking the Haiku Stairs on Oahu, Hawaii) 2019

For 4 or 5 years now, I've kept three tabs open in safari on my iPhone: My dream boat, my dream car, and the Stairway to Heaven hike in Oahu, Hawaii. Once we decided we were going to Maui for a week, I knew that whether my brother and his friend wanted to or not, I would go to Oahu for a day to tackle this bucket list hike. Coming in, I was nervous about the $1000 fine that could occur if caught hiking on the actual stairs (I'm broke) so I did my research and found the back route on my AllTrails app. This route (Moanalua Valley Trail) was 5.3 miles one way with a 2600 foot elevation gain and was stated as having very treacherous slopes and mud slides. After completing it, I can tell you that the trail is sure enough very dangerous and the most absurd hike I've done to date. Luckily for you, I filmed it all so you can see all of the most dangerous parts and get some tips from someone who has completed the legal hike to the top of the Haiku Stairs. I put tips in at the end of the video for people planning to do the hike so make sure to check those out! I also will include my AllTrails Link below so you can see my exact route and will give you the final statistics of our day of hiking. Please leave a comment letting me know if there is anything else you wanna know! Also, feel free to DM me on IG if you have more questions.

It is so so sad to hear the news about the planned removal of the Stairway to Heaven. This will forever be a treasured memory for me and the countless others who have hiked it. What are your thoughts on them deciding to rip these magnificent stairs out?

Man, a lot to say about this video. 1. Well done for having the sense and respect to hike the legal way (honestly this way looks *way* more difficult than the actual steps) 2. Beautiful production, including music and nicely curated drone footage 3. My favourite part - a complete absence of needless influencer bullshit Rare these days to sit through a video this long with no skipping, but I watched every second from start to end. Nice job.

I kept wanting to warn you that whatever peak you're aiming for, it's not the end, there's always another peak! When I did this hike last Fall, it was dry, so I was able to make the round trip in about 5 hours, but it was easily the most amazing hike I've ever been on. I've never felt so close to death yet so alive, before! My wife and I were brought along by my aunt (who hikes a TON) and they didn't make it sound like a big deal, so we didn't bring enough water for ourselves, but a nice couple we met on the large rope section had an extra gallon of water and shared it with us. At the top, some super fit guy was running up behind us. I think he said it was his fastest time, yet; like, under an hour or something crazy! I was just happy to be alive

When stationed in Hawaii, we did the Bowman trail up and across the ridge, then down the stairs. We met the guard and unofficial word is they tend to not mess with people coming down its trying to go up they stop and fine. Also, there are the hidden stairs on the other side of the tunnel of H3 from Halawa Valley. The only thing with those, the bottom third of the stairs are gone and have to retrace your steps.

Jack Hazen The illegal way is using the stairway the entire way up. The “legal” way is what was shown in this video (using the Moanalua Valley Trail) . I don’t personally understand why whoever makes those decisions would make the route shown in the video the “legal” way, as it looks so much deadlier than just using the stairs haha. Epic. That hike is no joke. There are several on O’ahu that are extremely challenging and that is certainly among the most challenging. I like the tips, there at the end - especially to remember that going down is more difficult than going up. It’s vital to be prepared. I took your route climbing up that mountain the only time I did it. I knew full well it would’ve been more dangerous to climb down the same way so I took the stairs instead. When you get close to the base (the illegal way) there is a path to your right that takes you into more woods, which is roughly 30 minutes of more trekking before you’re scott free, and you can avoid the police officer posting security all together!

Some clarification on everyone's view that the stairs are easier or safer than the backside - the reason why the stairs are illegal and the back way is not is because of the wear and tear. The stairs were built around World War 2, so at this point in time, they are all very rusted and unstable. So, while being shorter and "quicker," it is much more dangerous. There are sections where the rain has washed out the soil from beneath the rusted metal and other places where the metal has been bent or has rusted through entirely. I've done both sides and for safety, the back way is much better. Don't be naive and place our firefighters and first responders in danger because of a stupid choice you made. Mahalo, a Hawaii resident and photographer.

Thanks man 🙌🏼 it is a semi restricted flight area so height is an issue when you’re flying and it was stupid windy so probably pretty dumb to put my Mavic 2 up there but I had to do it for the shots haha if it isn’t too windy you should be good 👍🏼

My aunt lives at the bottom of those stairs. There is someone from the water company that chases people away and the neighbors do too. I’ve done the Pali and ayeia loop and a few other trails. I use to drink my coffee every morning for months looking at the haiku stairs

WOW!! You guys are crazy for doing that hike on a day that its wet. Muddy and one false move on either side and there you go off the cliff. Be safe cause all it takes is one mistake.

Bring extra water, as you drink it... the container gets lighter. On ANY hike ALWAYS bring a flashlight and a headlight...if the weather turns bad and going up is slowed, chances are when going down you will be racing against the sunset and then total darkness. It was stated going down is harder than going up so you don't want to spend the night waiting for sunrise to get down.

How was the weather before the hike? The trails look muddy there. We were checking past weather around your posting time in Jan. 2020 and saw some days with light rain. Do you remember which day you went exactly? Wondering if we should bring shoe spikes for better traction. Great video!

We flew in in the morning and hiked it the same day then flew out the next night so I dont know how the weather was in previous days sorry! We were there December 4th though. I would recommend bringing them, I would if I did it again. Thanks for watching!

Hey there! I love my Columbia Hiking boots that are goretex bottoms. I used my Columbia trail shoes for this hike but would definitely recommend getting a good pair dedicated for hiking. I would also bring a compact pair of boot spikes in case it rains prior to your trip!
