Honestly the reason I thought that move was fine is that the pawn was basically walking on the surface of the earth. No one above the age of 6 asks why gravity doesn't make us just fall into the center of the earth, right? The bishop was also functionally un-capturable for the challenge to work, so treating it like a planet where you can move on its surface freely seems fine.

Equal distance moves are not reducing the distance as required by the rules, so mission failed. Also, interestingly, even if the bishop moved or were captured, you'd still have to gravitate around that square, since the rules only require movement around the location where the bishop landed, not around the bishop itself.

2:57 if the distance of the queen from the bishop is the square root of 3²+2², why is the distance of the knight 4 and not 3?
@timothymclean

Because the knight would need to make four king moves in a single direction to reach the bishop. The queen would need to make three horizontal and two vertical ones. I hope that clears this up.

This challenge was really cool!
2:47 3, 4, 5 is a pythagorean triple
This was actually super creative and unique! Maybe I’ll play a game like this…
2:53 It's a 3-4 square, so the hipotenuse is 5.
this is the best challange ever
Would be interesting if he moved his bishop afterwards^^
Bishop is Pucci this game lol
That was a great challenge and a great game
ngl that queen capture was extremely satisfying
Interesting how you read the challenge and made your next move in just 10 seconds.
Its understandable that there is no reactions in the challenge.
That was a clever challenge.
That was a weird challenge
Finally a mission accomplished after so many what thes. I suppose taking the bishop though brings your piece the closest to it.
the bishop is a person of extraordinary mass
2:47 must be because if you use Bresenham’s line drawing algorithm to draw a line from the pawn to the bishop you would have 5 colored pixels. Your genius astounds me every time, I would have never thought of that good sir.

No idea what you mean but the reason why it's 5 squares away is that the distance from the pawn to the bishop can also be represented as the hypothenuse of a right triangle. Once you do that, you can apply Pythagoras' theorem to find that distance out: 4^2 + 3^2 = x^2 25 = x^2 5 = x

Before watching, I'm guessing the challenge isn't necessarily easy, but boring. And that's why there's no reactions.

2:58 Yeah I'm not good at math, and would've not realized this was legal. I was gonna play Be2 to give my King an escape square after opponent plays Qf2+
The math ain’t mathin here
You never say "still theory" anymore
"sqrt(29)" That's actually sqrt(45). He's not Math Simp, I guess.
Beautiful, very nice
This challenge could have just been described as "Your pieces and pawns can only move closer to the first bishop to move" but whatever.

yea but there's different ways of counting distances on a grid

Basically 2 min of chess simp showing off their math skills and science knowledge 😂
It's amazing how often people will be so focused on an attack that they give up a huge piece for free lol Or the other thing that will often happen at about 1k or less is they'll see a big threat and move their horsey to protect it. Then you just wait a few moves and they forget that the horsey is protecting something and they'll move it 😂😂😂
Actually pawn takes knight isnt orbiting, if still same distance from the bishop that that prob not orbit, orbit will still pull or push the object, moon orbit our planet but still slowly leaving remember? So that pawn is just hacking and breaks the rule of the universe🤓👆
its 5 squares because 3^2 + 4^2 25, and sqr root of 25 is 5
Why didn't you capture the bishop?
exc6 is not legal: challenge says "your moves must now *reduce* the distance", so challenge failed :(
@manabuhorikita969

are trying to argue that a reduction is necessarily exlusive ? In english that would be right but the guy wrote a maths formula, meaning that the reduction can be inclusive in that case as we enter the maths' domain
@drdilyor

@@manabuhorikita969 im a computer scientist and reduction definitely conveys exclusive meaning, just like decreasing means strictly decreasing. i didnt know in more mathy world it meant different thing :(
@EliasHasle

@@drdilyor A decreasing function does not have to be strictly decreasing. Strictly makes it stricter (disallowing zeros in the derivative). But the phrasing of the challenge hints at the strict interpretation.
Or an impossible one.
This is actually a fun challenge, ngl edit:spelling
i love you simp❤
Yeah, many good challenges get no attention on discord, unfortunately.
Equal distance moves are not reducing the distance as required by the rules, so mission failed. Also, interestingly, even if the bishop moved or were captured, you'd still have to gravitate around that square, since the rules only require movement around the location where the bishop landed, not around the bishop itself.

It's not legal for the challenge, but I can imagine the pawn orbiting around a fat bishop. That is funny so I allowed it.

@Eo-ms3kw

The letters don't matter. I learned it as a^2+b^2=c^2 but you can replace the letters with anything you want as long as you know what they stand for and that it just means: cathetus(1)^2+cathetus(2)^2=hypotenuse^2
2:57 if the distance of the queen from the bishop is the square root of 3²+2², why is the distance of the knight 4 and not 3?
@timothymclean
11 ай бұрын
Because the knight would need to make four king moves in a single direction to reach the bishop. The queen would need to make three horizontal and two vertical ones. I hope that clears this up.
@MedK001
11 ай бұрын
@@timothymclean That's not how this works. The distances are being measured using mathematical distances, not king's moves, because the premise of the challenge specifies so.
@timothymclean

@@MedK001 I'm explaining why the numbers put into the Pythagorean theorem are 3 and 2 for the queen, but 4 and 0 for the knight. The real answer is "Because the knight is four spaces away, while the queen is three horizontal and two vertical spaces away," but I didn't think that would be helpful, since quokkawaka was basically asking why those numbers were used.
@EliasHasle
11 ай бұрын
Why would it be 3? It is sqrt( 4^2 + 0^2) = sqrt( 16 ) = 4, which is clearly more than sqrt( 3^2 + 2^2) = sqrt( 13 ) = 3.something
