To be honest, I‘ve always thought of it as Smokey’s because I’m old enough to remember it when it first came out but like many other songs, sometimes it takes a different voice to make it come alive! The same way Proud Mary did for Tina or When a Man… did for Michael Bolton or I Will Always….for Whitney, etc., all were somebody else’s first before these other artists turned them into stratospheric hits!!

Yes, Smokey wrote it. Sang it with his Miracles. The Temptations recorded it in 1963, also. But The Jackson 5 had the best version of it in Dec 1969.
